Herald and gulrcrtiscr. Newnan, Ga., Friday, June 15, 1888. THE ROSE-LIPPED JUNE. ’Neath theblue languish or <-therinl eve, Juno opes tier lips and all the air Is heavy with her sweetened whispers; Ia>y. Poesy and Beauty, hang upon !n-r tongue, While Fancy feeds where field and wood and grove lie dreaming. Yon saucy brook. Irreverent in the hush, Romps the elovery mead awhile—anon Through nod of daisies dancing nimbly on To neighboring wood; vhere like a truant Tired of overplay, ’twill mince and loiter In the cool of nooks. And when the day is done, O June! and thou In twilight dew wilt bathe thy rose-wreathed brow— When night flings o’er thine eyes her spangled veil, And Ilian wraps thee in her robe of pale Wnen the reclining hills are soitly sleeping, And Silvered silence o’er the green Is creep ing— To kneel devout before the sacred flower While the sweet incense mingle sighs Upfloating toward her home amid the skies— O then, fair June! in love’s imperial reign, Full many a vow thou’lt hear from doting swain— From tlie coy inaid that owns thy passioning spell, not need money for transportation, as they had more than enough for that purpose. A Swedish immigrant, with j his wife and four children, had nearly | $10,000 in gold which he carried in a i large bag. The family was destined 1 for Minnesota, where they will settle ! down on a little farm. None of the immigrants when asked by the recording clerks under the new rules of questioning ordered by the* commissioners of immigration if they were ever guilty of a crime, ever in a poor or immoral house, or guilty of any A SIBERIAN PRISON. ' he June number of the ii) century Magazine contains the second of George Ken- ■'**. nan’s illustrated papers on Siberia and the Exile Sys- 1 tern, which are attracting such wide attention. The articles are being exten sively copied into foreign papers, among others the ergan of the Russian lib erals, published at Geneva, by whom they are verv highly commended. In this June number Mr. Kennan gives an interesting account of his visit to the for- vs. Maria Elder. offense against society, would plead war(ling prison at Tiumen, where he found guilty, and all were permitted to pass | double the number of prisoners confined along, but some were very much as tonished at the questions they had to answer. There never was before such large numbers of European people arriving in this country, and nearly all seem to have an idea that the northwest is the promised land. Georgia should have a resident immigration commissioner in New York to divert some of these Order to Perfect Service. Cleveland Press. “Well, well, don’t fret; I’ll be there in a minute.” But, my friend, it minute means a good deal, notwithstanding you affect to hold it of no consequence. Did you ever stop to think what may happen in a minute? No. Well, while you are murdering a minute for yourself and one for me, before you get ready to sit down to the business we have in hand, I will amuse you by telling you some things that may happen meantime. Jn a minute we shall be whirled around on the outside of the earth, by its diurnal motion, a distance of thir teen miles. At the same time we shall have gone along with the earth, in its grand journey around the sun, 1,080 miles. Pretty quick traveling, you say?’ Why, that is slow work compar ed with the rate of travel oi that ray of light which just now reflected from that mirror made you wink. A minute ago that ray was 11,100,000 miles away. In a minute, over all the world, about eighty new-born infants have each rais ed wail of protest at the lates for thrusting existence upon them, while as many more human beings, weary with the struggle of life, have opened their lips to utter their last sigh. In a minute the lowest sound your ear can catch has been made by 000 vi brations, while the highest tone reach ed you after making 5,228,000 vibra tions. In a minute an express train goes a mile, and a Cleveland street car 32 roks; the fastest trotting horse, 147 9-13 rods, and an average pedestrian of the genus homo has got over 10 rods. £Each minute in the United States, night and day, all the year round, twenty-four barrels of beer have to go down 13,000 throats, and 4,830 bushels of grain have come to bin. If there were a box kept at the City Hall in the city of Cleveland, into which every minute a sum sufficient to pay the interest on the city debt had to be dropped, the sum so dropped -each minute of the whole year would be 87 cents. How about national finances ? Well, sir, in the same way, each minute, night and day, by the official reports for the year 1880, the United States collected $039,and spent $401, $17$ more than necessary. r lhe interest on the public debt was $90 a minute, or just- exactly equal to the amount of silver mined in t hat time. Now, in the residue of figures I give, you will remember that they represent so much for every minute in the year. All the preceding figures should be so considered. And remember, also, j that we are all the time, hereafter, j talking about the facts connected with : the whole United States. The telephone is used 595 times, the ; telegraph 130 times. Of tobacco, 925 pounds is raised, and part of it has been used in making 0,073 cigars, and some i more of it has gone up in the smoke of; 2.292 cigarettes. But i am afraid that you will forget I that we are talking about a minute, j sixty seconds of time. No? Well, How India Rubber Grows. Nicaragua Cor. New V ork Herald. Now we come into a forest of rubber trees, which can be detected without And fains to trust-thee more than she would the eye of an expert, lor they are all scarred and dying rapidly from the wounds of the hunter’s machete. The rubber reminds me of the boy who “killed the goose that laid the golden egg.” Each tree can afford to lose a certain amount of juice per year and still live. When one of these fellows, however, makes a discovery, onlv a few months suffice to place his bonanza in the ranks of the many that have gone before. The consequence is, one may traverse these immense forests from end to end and never meet a \iigin tree. The ordinary specimen of Nica ragua is from 50 to 100 feet high, av eraging about two feet in diameter. The bark is white and the leaves oval, with a slight inclination downward. The cuts are made about two feet apart and extend from the ground to the first branch, channels being scored in the side to lead the juice into a bag, held at the bottom. The average yield of a large tree is from five to seven gallons of a milky fluid. This is placed in an open vessel and mixed in small proportions with the juice of a plant found near the rub ber tree called the wisth, which hastens congelation. After this operation is complete the product is baled up and shipped north, to be refined and fur ther prepared for commerce. Anothei tree very similar to the rubber, and often mistaken for it, is the cow tiee. This yields a liquid very much like the milk in color, consistency and taste. than there was room for. In reply to a question from Mr. Kennan as to how many prisoners died during the year, the warden replied: “ About three hundred. We have an epi demic of typhus almost every fall. A prison so overcrowded can not be kept clean, and as for the air in the cells, you know now what it is like. The local author ities here have again and again urged the Government to make adequate provision for the large number of exfies crowded in to the prison during the season of na\ iga- yond the building of two log barracks.” In the overcrowded women's prison Mr. Kennan says he found no criminals—all of the occupants were voluntarily going into banishment with their husbands. t Order to Perfeci Service. If you don’t want to be robbed of your good name, don’t have it engrav ed on your umbrella. Found a Pot of Gold. A few days ago some of the hands employed in getting out crossties, eight miles from Carrollton, discovered what they supposed to be an old grave, and suspecting that at some time in the past some one had committed murder, concluded to dig into the earth and see. After throwing out some of the dirt they abandoned it and went off. Soon afterward an old negro named Howard Wells came along, in company with an other negro, and seeing that the earth had been recently moved began digging, and Howard pushed his stick into a cavern and revealed what he claims was a pot of gold. He left and went to work, intending to go back that night and get it, but waited longer, and when he did go, some one else had been there and carried off the prize. Howard made haste to tell of his misfortune, and stated that there GEORGIA—C Joseph E. l)cnt, bite of £cgal lioticcs. Letters of Dismission. OWETA • Dent, ex weta County: _ ul or of W. B.
