— ®hq gcrald and ^dwrtisen. Newnan, Ga., Friday, July 13, 1888. THE OLD RAIL FENCE. Let others in their sonirs rehearse The beauties they may see, j And build a monument in* verse, So that, it- fitting be. But J will raise my voice to sing A fact without pretense. That much despised, old-fashioned thing, The homely old rail fence. What, would our dreams of childhood be Without Its zig-zag path? And then what, flowers we used to see Before the aftermath! The fields are there; like grass ablaze Theflreweed flaunts from thence, But almost, gone from out. our gaze - We find the old rail fence. • Tlie rajiid march of progress lias Krased the landmarks old; It Is to-day a thing that, was, A story that is to'd. The pruning knife of time has cut, With energy intense, With other childhood relics, out The honored old rail fence. It was the squirrel’s safe retreat; The chipmunk’s chattering oft Made us advance 'With hurrying feet Where he was, perched aloft. There nature stored her wealth away, And oft we carried thence A thousand jewels in a day, Found by the old rail fence. -Arbutus, mullein, golden rod, Felt its protecting care. And though with hands full home we trod, We had a world to spare. Life gives, I know, so much to-day The past to recompense, But with sweet memories laid away I keep the old rail fence. “Just As I Am Without One Plea.’’ One (lay a faithful minister, the pas tor of a small church, met in the street a young girl, a member of his congrega tion, on her way to be fitted for a new -dress for an approaching ball. As she told him her errand, he said to her, “I wish you would give up your life ol 'vanity and become a Christian and live a godly life. Will you not stay away from the ball because I wish you to do so?” She answered, “I wish you would •mind your own business,” and bidding him good-bye she went on her way. Shortly afterward she went to the ball, danced all night, and return ing home, laid her weary head upon her pillow. But her conscience soon began to trouble her. She thought she had offended her best friend, the pas tor, who cared lor her soul. She was in deep dist ress for three days. \\ hen she could bear it no longer, she went to her pastor and told him how much she had been pained on account of the words she had spoken to him. “For three days,” she said, “1 have been the molt wretched girl in the world, and now, O, that 1 were a . Christian. 1 want to he happy. What must I do to Or In Man Really II«if of All the Facul* tied of the Animal Kingdom? If the doctrine he true that man is real ly the heir of all the various species and genera of the animal kingdom, it seems a little hard upon us that, even by way of exception, we inherit none of the most marvelous instincts of those species ami genera, and have to lx* content with those greater hut purely human faculties by which even the most wonderful of the animal instincts have Ix-en somehow ex tinguished. Sir John Lubbock maintains j | with a good deal of plausibility that there i | are insects, and very likely even higher j | animals, which perceive colors of which we have no glimpse, and hoar sounds which to us arc inaudible. Yet we never I hear of a human retina that includes in ! I its vision those colors depending on vibra- ! j tions of the ether which are too slow or i ] too rapid for our ordinary eyes, nor of a j ; human ear which is entranced with mu- j ■ sic that to the great majority of our ! species is absolutely inaudible. Again, j | we never hear of a human being who ! | could perform the feat of which we were I told only the other day in a bloodhound. | In a dark night it followed up for three miles the trail of a thief with whom the bloodhound could never have been in contact the had just purloined some rolls of tan from the lanyard in which the dog was chained up), and finally sat down under the tree in which the man had taken refuge. Why, we wonder, are those finer pow- j ers of discriminating and following the , track of a scent which so many of the ] lower animals possess, entirely extin- ! guished in man, if man lie the real heir of all the various genera which show powers inferior to his own? We see no trace in animals of that high enjoyment of the finer scents which make the blos soming of the spring flowers so great a delight to human beings, and yet men are entirely destitute of that almost un- erring power of tracking the path of an odor which seems to be one of the princi pal gifts of many quadrupeds and some birds. It. is the same with the power of a dog or cat to find its way back to a home to which it is attached, but from which it has been taken by a route that it cannot possibly follow on its return, even if it had the power of observing that route, which usually it has not had. Nothing could he more convenient than such a power to a lost child. But no one ever heard of any child who possessed it. Still more enviable is that instinct pos sessed by so many birds of crossing great tracts of land and sea without apparently any landmarks or seamarks to guide them, and of reaching a quarter of the globe whicli many of them have never visited before, while those who have visited it before have not visited it often enough to learn the way—at least, by an}' nde which, in like circumstances, would be of any use to human intelligence. The migratory birds must certainly lie in pos session of either senses or instincts en tirely beyond the range of human imag ination. and yet no one ever bear’d of the survival of such a sense or instinct in any member of our race. It may he said, in deed, that men have either inherited or reproduced the slave making instinct of some of the military ants"', though that unfortunate and degrading instinct does not appear to have been inherited by any of her higher animals which intervene *“THE STARRY FIRMAMENT’* , * *ON HIGH”* * * Sang Addison.
