The twenty-six interior towns for the j
week ending October 5 received 133,019
bales, shipped 96,283, and bad stocks of j
98,210 bales. Same time last, year they j
received 16$,298, shipped 134,460, and '
had stocks of 147,969.
The above totals show that the old
interior stocks have increased during
the week 32,116 bales and are to-night
49,220 bales less 1 ban at the same period
last year. The receipts at the -same
towns have been -32,378 bales less than
the same week last year, and since
September ! the receipts at all the
towns are 230,734 bales less than for the
same time in 1887.
The exports for the week ending Oc
tober o reach a total of 82,748 bales, of
which .54,849 were shipped to Great Brit
ain, 10,269 to France and 16,620 to the

The above statement shows—
1. That the total receipts from the
plantations since September 1, 1888, are
370,331 bales; in 1887 were 1,030,131
bales, and in 1880 were 650,006 bales.
2. That, although the receipts at the
out ports the past week were 190,508
bales, the actual movement from plan
tations was only 227,304 bales, the bal
ance being taken from the stocks at in
terior towns. Last year the receipts
from t he plantations for the same week
were 2so,224 bales, and for 1880 they
were 230,087 bales.

Gen. Maim on Bethink, of Talbot,
has announced himself a candidate for
Congress from this district; but, of
course, he will stand no chance of elec
tion. He is a Republican, and repre
sented this district in Congress just-
after the war.
The returns show that the proposed
amendment to the Constitution, pro
viding for two additional Judges of the
Supreme Court, was defeated in the
late election by about 8,000 majority.
The State's Annual Income and Ex
penditure.
The forthcoming annual report of the
Compl roller-General contains a com
plete record of the financial transac
tion.s of t he State government for the
trsc.l year ending October 1. The fig
ures may be dry reading, but they will
interest the people who pay the taxes.
The cash balance October 1, 1887, was
$349,702.88. The receipts to October,
1888, were $1,906,092.21, giving an availa
ble total of $2,200,47)4.59. The'expendi
tures for the year footed up the enor
mous sum of $2,019,103.07.
Tho lager items of receipts were as
follows:
Capitol tax, $201,77)0.14; general tax,
$900),880.02; fees of inspectors, $97,919.46;
convict hire, $25,000; insurance tax
es ami fees, $30,273.20; liquor tax, $65,-
981.82; railroad taxes, $73,450.55; sale of
bonds, $95,000; rental of Western and
Atlantic Railroad, $800,000.
The largest disbursements , were:
Public debt', $802,784.69; new capitol,
$207,560.53; civil establishment, $107,-
382.49; Lunatic Asylum, $191,588.28;
Legislative pay-roll, $124,222.90; De
