MOISTURE IN HOUSES.
A CUt of Rolcntlflc Information far the
IlatUKlH'cper'ii Benefit.
It is »tate<] that the sudden change of
the weather recently, from cold to warm
and danijt, has caused thousands of dol
lars of damage to wall paper and othei
articles in houses. Of course it has, and
it is so simply because many people do
not study the plainest common sense
principles in airing their houses.
One evening lately people went to IxhI
with a hunt for extra blankets because
of the sudden and severe chiil in the at
mosphere. When they rose in tire morn
ing, their bedrooms, parlors, (lining
rooms, etc., were yet chilly from the
cold of the previous day, while tin; out
side atmosphere liad suddenly become
not only warm, but hot and oppressive
with dampness.
Inconsiderate 'people opened their win
dows and doors because tiie weather was
warm, forgetting that the excessive
moisture in the atmosphere would rush
in witli the warm air and swiftly deposit
itself on the cold walls, furniture, etc.,
and penetrate wall papers, curtains, bed
ding, and everything within reach that
presented a surface colder than the air
that carried it into the house.
Of course (he moisture loosened and
discolored paper; made curtains as limp as
a wash rag; made l»tds damp and musty,
and generally spoiled everything that
water could spoil; but all could have
been avoided by following the plain, com
nion sense rule of not opening houses
suddenly fo suddenly changed atmos
plifTc, dairying an excess've quantity of
moisture,
A pitcher liiled With cold water and
placed in a room in summer will “sweat ’
—at !«osl lliut is what it is commonly
called. The pitcher does not sweat., be
cause it is not porous and cunn t sweat'
but the cold water inside of it chills tire
outer surface, and, as soon as the outer ;
' surface of the pitcher becomes cooler ;
than the atmosphere in the room, the
moisture of the air will he precipitated
upon the pitcher in drops.
This simple illustration should teach all
housewives to avoid suddenly opening
rooms in a house when the outside at
mospherc is warmer than the tempera- '
lure of tlie rooms and full of moisture. !
In all such cases the wall paper, furni
ture, etc., being cooler than the outside |
air, will speedily have the moisture of i
the atmosphere precipitated upon them, i
and it will require days to restore the j
house to the dry condition that Lessen- ;
tiul to health.
There are no arbitrary freaks in the ,
laws which govern the atmosphere stir- i
rounding ns. and there is nothing ah- ;
struse in mastering them. Warm, damp |
air will ever precipitate its moisture in
houses or elsewhere whenever it comes .
in contact with anything chilled by a
cooler atmosphere, and that is tlio whole
story. The only thing to lie added is
that, when people have thus ignorantly
or negligently allowed their houses to
become damp, they should light- fires
and dry them as promptly as possible.—

In a Janmlca Kitchen.
The kitchen, which is always an out
side cabin, is minus a chimney; an ele
vated sort of range or hob is built out
into the floor, on which the cooking is
done, sometimes by means "f charcoal,
but oftener with brushwood and smaller
sticks, the smoke escaping through a
hole in the r«»of. There is generally au
old fashioned brick oven outside for
baking bread, but it is seldom used, an
few families now bake their own bread.
They buy it if near or in a village from
a baker's cart which makes its rounds in
the country from the nearest store, where
it can be procured fresh twice a week.
A Sound Legal Opinion.
E. Bainbridge Monday, E~q., County ,
Attorney, (’lay county, Texas, says:
“Have used Electric Hitters with most
happy results. My brother also was:
very low with Malarial Fever and
Jaundice, but was cured by timely use
of this medicine. Am satisfied Electric
Hitters saved his life.”
Mr. D. T. Wtlcoxson. of Horse Cave,
Kv., adds a like testimony, saying: He
positively believes he would have died,
liad it not been for Electric Hitters.
This great remedy will ward off, as
well as cure all Malarial Diseases, and
for all Kidney, Fiver and Stomach Dis

The Victims of Fright.
The Oriental legend that represents
cholera meeting the traveler flying from
tlie scourge, and telling him that the
majority of the dead were the victims of
fright, not of the plague, seems to apply
to the yellow fever scare in the United
States. If the same number of people
who die in New \ork in a. single season
of pneumonia, consumption, or avoidable
accidents, fell victims to yellow fever or
any other epidemic, tiie city would bo
emptied of inhabitants, and panic and
consternation would prevail. Tlie scare
created causes much more suffering and
disturbance than the disease itself. Hence
in some southern countries where it is
endemic it attracts no more notice than
most of the other evils that afflict the
human family. Courage is one cf the
' best of medicines.—Once a \\ eek.

I» \ ron ami His Dietetics.
Lord Byron was remarkably abstemi
ous. owing to a morbid fear of obesity.
For a long period of time he lived upon
soda water and biscuits. At another
time, according to Moore, “A thin slice
of bread, with tea tit breakfast, a light
vegetable dinner, with a bottle or two of :
seltzer water, tinged with vin do Grave, •
and in the evening a cup of green tea, *
without milk or sugar, formed the whole
of his sustenance. The pangs of hunger i
he appeased by privately chewing tobacco ;
and smoking cigars. ” In Greece Byron
lived upon dry bread, vegetables and j
cheese; and, to ascertain the effect of |
his dietetics, he used to measure his ,
wrist and waist every morning, taking
medicine if he found an increase.—Lou
