J A Near. Compliment.
A writer in tho Fairburn News,
speaking of tho rapid adviyiooment
nindo by our city during recent years,
pays ns the following handsome com
pliment:
“Newnan shook herself out of a state
of ‘innocuous desuetude’ about sevon
years ago and Imiit an oil mill whieli
was so successful that it inspired tlie
town to got a move on herself, and to
day she boasts a free public school, two
guano factories, a cotton factory, a sad
dle and harness factory, furniture fac
tory, anil many other life giving enter
prises;—and Newnan blooms like a
roso and spreads like a green bay tree,
and that not because she is wicked, hut
because slio lias progress written on her
gates witli a largo P.”
The writer might liavo gone further
in his enumeration and mentioned our
carriago factory, wagon factory, cigar
factory, anil marble works, all of which
have been established within tlie period
named, and all of which are flourishing.
Postal Statistics.
Uncle Sam’s postal oniployoos are
not apt to forgot that this is census
year, and in view of a recent order of
the Postmaster-General they will have
cause to remember it for some time to
come. lie 1ms ordered a count of all
mail matter, of ovory class, deposited in
postofllces and railway postal cars for
the seven days ending Alay 12th, at 5
A. m. Blanks liavo been furnished ev
ery postoffico in tho country, which,
when properly tilled out, will show the
number of pieces of eacii class of mail-
able matter deposited for local delivery
or for transmission to other postofflces.
The greatest particularity is enjoined
upon all employees of the service in
classifying and keeping a correct count
of the different pieces, showing tlie
amount of postage paid as well a» the
amount to be collected on delivery,
and also tlie weight of each class, sepa
rately. Tho statistics thus compiled
will be useful in many ways, and when
tlie result is announced it will be aston
ishing in its magnitude.
Postmaster Alilner says the receipts
of tho Newnan office amount now to
something over $3,000, annually, being
an increase of about 15 per cent, for tlie
past live years,
A Picnic to the Graduating Girls.
For years past it has been tlie custom
in Newnan for, our older set of beaux
to invite the young ladies of tho grad
uating class—first of College Temple,
and latterly of the city public school—
to paticipate iu a grand picnic, given
each recurring year especially for their
benefit, and tlie occasion is always
looked forward to as an event of un
wonted interest and pleasure. The
picnic tendered tlie graduating class
tliis year took place on Friday last, at
Lodi, and is spoken of inmost enthu
siastic terms by those who were so for
tunate as to be included in the party.
Luncheon was furnished by tlie Pinson
House, and when we state that tin;
preparations for tliis important feature
of the day’s.entertainment were per
sonally supervised by Mr. and Mrs.
Pinson, the completeness and sufficien
cy of the details will be readily appre
ciated. The party went out by private
conveyance in the morning and return
ed at sundown, and was composed of
the following couples:
Air. S. J. Leverett with Miss Bernice

A Female College for Newim
A movement was sot on foot tliis
week by some of our enterprising citi
zens which, if successful, will result in
tlie establishment of a first-class female
college in Newnan, and it looks now as
if it will succeed. The plan is to buy
tho College Temple property and do
nate it to tlie Episcopal church of Geor
gia, upon condition t hat tho church es
tablish and maintain a female college,
to bo under the care and patron ago of
tho Diocese of Georgia. Messrs. II. C.
Fisher, AV. A'. Atkinson, and L. AL
Farmer wore appointed a committee
from the Newnan Board of Trado to
attend the State Episcopal Convention
which convened in Atillndgovillo on
Wednesday last and niako formal ten
der the property to tho church, upon
tho conditions specified above. The
convention was so favorably impressed
with tlie proposition t hat a committee
was appointed to visit Newnan, inspect
the property, and tako such steps as
may lie expedient in carrying out tho
instructions of the convention, and at
tho sumo time conform to the wishes of
our citizens. The committee was di
rected to perform tliis duty within tlie
next sixty days, and was invested with
authorit y to accept or reject our propo
sition, as tlie circumstances shall war
rant. Our convict ion is that t lie offer
will be accepted, and, having been ac
cepted, that tlie church will establish a
college that will lie equal in all rospocts
to tlie foremost institutions of learning
in the country.
The total amount required for the
purchase of the property will bo about.
$8,000, three-fourths of which was
raised in a few hours t his week, and the
balance will lie easily secured if the
committee of inspection should make a
favorable report.
