If you’re vt alting for a day
In the future—far away—
When, with gold enough to spare.
You will rest from trial and care,
And enjoyment find supreme,
Let mo tell you—'tls a dream.
If you’re slaving all for wealth
At the cost of life and health,
And the present you reject
For the future you expect.
If your joys are yet to tie—
Tain, not pleasure, you will sea.
If you’re waiting to he old
Ere you take the good of gold
And enjoy your rightful due
Of life’s pleasures, Bweot and true—
You will find, alas, too late,
Woful disappointment great
Live life's journey by the wny;
While tho sun shines make your hay;
Now—now only ure you sure
Of the pleasures that endure,
l’lensures that make memory bright
When life noon lias turned to night
O, the heart grows hard nnd cold
Piling up the yellow gold.
Throwing present good away, ’
Dreaming that a future day
Never coming may bestow
Joys you now or never know.
Walt not till a life is spent
Ere you know Its sweet content;
Take its pleasures good aud true.
While they still belong fo you.
Then upon a future day,
Tliey, niul more, with you will stay.

The Shadow of TeuerlfTe.
In (he Canary Islands attention is
being called to the fact that tho peak
of Teneriffe at dawn casts upon the
ocean a shadow that at first appears to
be flat upon the surface, but that grad
ually seems to rise up until it is per
pendicular. and stanas apparently a
reproduction in black of tho real moun
tain which beside it is white and glow
ing in tho sunlight. The fecientiiic ex
planation of the phenomenon is that
the shadow at tlrst is really flat upon
the water, but that, as the Teat of tho
rising sun causes a vapor to rise from
tho ocean, the shadow gradually be
comes cast against tho bank of fog in
stead of upon tho water, and really is
straight up in the air.—Montreal Star.
IIow ^Lozenges Are Made.
"The lozenge maker dies, but tho
lozenge never,” said Robert II. Moses,
a wealthy ex merchant.
“Years ago,” lie continued, "all loz
enges were made by hand. The dough
or paste was rolled out as a pastry cook
rolls out his work, and then stamped
bv hand into the circles, hearts and
diamonds so dear to the juvenile eye.
In those days there were many loz
enge makers. But into the trade, as
into every other industry, the inventor
found his way, and in a few years
made so many labor saving machines
ns to drive tho workmen into their
trades. Today lozenge making is sim
plicity itself. The ingredients are
thrown into a large trough, aud a
kneading machine converts them
into a lino dough. This is put into
the lozenge machine in quantities of
fifty to a hundred pounds at a time.
The nmchiuo rolls it into line sheets,
cuts it into any possible pattern, re
volves the'dough between the shapes,
embosses the lozenges, prints mono
grams, initials or numes upon them,
or writes such pleasant sentences as '1
love you,’ 'Yes, darling,’ ‘Come off,
please,’ and then moves them ott' to
drying boards and rings the bell to
announce when each hoard is covered.
They are dried in huge crates, and
then cleaned, polished and barreled or
boxed by a third machine. The en
tire cost of manufacture is so slight
when these machines are employed
that it is possible to turn out finished
lozenges at a fraction over the cost of
the sugar. Under such conditions it is
impossible for hand labor to compete.”

Why Thunder Sours Milk.
You lmvo often asked or been asked:
"Why does thunder sour sweet milk?”
Milk is peculiar, inasmuch ns it is very
sensitive to atmospheric changes.
Electricity, tho cause of thunder, pro
duces, or, if it does not produce, fol
lows great aud rapid changes in at
mospheric conditions. Lightning is
the discharge which comes of electri
cal Inequalities, producing chemical
changes in tho air. Thunder storms
represent the greatest activity of elec
trical phenomenon, and flio tyest au
thorities give it as their opinion that
the electricity in the atmosphere is tho
prime cause of milk souring during tho
prevalence of such storms.—St. Louis
Republic.
An Anecdote ot the'Artist Girard.
Girard, the famous French painter,
when young, called on Lan Juinais,
then of Napoleon’s council. The
young artist was poorly dressed and
met a cold reception, hut Lan Juinais
discovered such proofs of talent and
good sense that lie arose with tho
greatest courtesy and respect and ac
companied his visitor to the ante
chamber when lie took his leave.
The change of manner was so marked
that Girard looked his surprise, but
Lan Juinais anticipated bis inquiry by
saying: "My young friend, we receive
an unknown person according to his
dress; we take leave of him according
to his merits.”—Dry Goods Chronicle.

Houses In N«w York.
Recently I had a talk witli an expe
rienced builder. "Houses in New York
city,” said lie, "are built as badly as
ever. The men employed by the build
ing department are underpaid. They
should bo paid the present salary, plus
what they now get from builders to
close their eyes to defective work.
You see, a speculative builder wants
to nut up his house as cheaply as pos
sible, so be slips five, ten or twenty
dollars in the hand of a city inspector.
Why, there are today houses uptown
that would tumble down if they were
built separately. Standing one next
to the other is the only thing that
keeps them up. ”—Epoch.
Cutting Class Tubes by Electricity.
Glass tubes are now cut by electric
ity. The tube is surrounded with fine
wires, the extremities of which are'
placed in communication with the
current. When the current is passed
through the wire the latter becomes
red hot. heating a glass beneath it, and
a single drop of water deposited on the
heated plate will cause a clean break
age of the glass at that point.—New
York Commercial Advertiser.
Expensive Living.
In Buenos Ayres an opera box for
sixty nights costs 1(7,000. Coal for
range or fireplace is from $38 to $40
ner (on. You may go to the circus for
$. r ».50. Shoes are worth from $10 to
$12. To be buried in style costs thou
sands. The cheapest luxury in town
is to have your boots blacked often at
5 cents a shine.—Exchange.
May lie All Right.
English as she is wrote, spelled and
pronounced gives everybody a big lee
way, and it is perhaps all right for the
engraver to engrave: "Ovr” for "our,”
and "Tvesday” for Tuesday. It simply
looks a little odd, and no one cun
charge him with being crosseyed.—

All Ilerauso of a Railroad Ticket.
A railroifll ticket to Trenton was tho
means of stirring up quite un excite
ment in Baltimore. The owner—a
man nan 1 West—for safe keeping,
put it in .,is hat, and both hat and
ticket were blown into Jones’ falls.
"One dollar reward! One dollar re
ward!” shouted West, anti in an in
stant dozens of cub drivers, newsboys
and bootblacks scampered down the
falls aud followed the ticket until it
lodged against the high wall just be
neath the St. Paul'bridge. Mr. West
commanded the party, and with his
cane pointed to wliero the ticket was
lodged, on tho opposite side of the
stream.
There was about twenty feet of
water, of uncertain depth, separating
the men from the little strip of paper,
and cab drivers and bootblacks began
at once to remove their hoots and roll
up their trousers to wade across. The
current is rather swift at this point.
One little fellow, about 10 years of age.
plunged in witli bis clothes, shoes anti
even nut on. He hud gotten half way
across when the current rolled him
over and over in the muddy water, and
the crowd howled, lie got out all
right. Finully the ticket started again
to sail down the streum, and a cabman
managed to draw it ashore with his
whip. Mr. West paid the dollar, had
just three minutes’ time to catch the
train, and was given a rousing cheer by
the crowd as lie rode away to Trenton
with u ticket considerably worse for
wear, but still good for one first class
fare.—Philadelphia ledger.
The Mini Prog.
The man frog was first exhibited at
u country fair in one of the rural dis
tricts of Franco, in 1800, and at Paris
during the whole of the following
year. He hud a stout, ill shaped body,
tho perfect counterpart of Unit of a
frog, and thick skin, cold and dummy,
covered with numerous welts and
blotches. His great frog like face,
eves .five inches apart, and enormous
month were a hideous sight to behold.
Ho attracted n good deal of attention
from the Academy of Medicine, Paris,
and delegates from that institution
were deputized to make him an object
of study. During tho four years fol
lowing I860, lie traveled all over
France aud parts of Hpain, and made
quite a fortune for himself and his ex
hibitors; retired to his native city,
Puvre, where lie died of a fever in
1874.— fit. Louis Republic.

Breutlitt Only Through Your Norm.
A Dfltch physician lias recently de
clared that a close connection exists
between the exercise of our mental
faculties and disorders of the nose
The opinion is expressed that if it were
generally known how many .cases of
chronic headache, of inability to learn
or to perform mental work, were due
to chronic disease of the nose, manv
of these cases would he easily cured,
and the number of child victims of
the so called over pressure in educa
tion would be notably reduced, Ac
cording to the above mentioned au
thority it would seem that breathing
through the nose is absolutely indis
pensable in order to secure the full
value of the mental capacity.—Herald

When the current in electric rail
ways passes from the car wheel to the
track, it causes a considerable increase
in friction between the two. Expert
opinion seems to favor the theory that
this additional resistance is due to a
slight welding action caused by th-
heat generated by the current.
