Concerning Advertising Charts.
Sttry toctiou of the oountry is sub-

gentlemen with the advertising chart,
in Which he will sell the advertiser A

Does Advertising Pay?
This ro a very important question to
business men, and one that only busi
ness men can answer. We have tiro
assurance from thousands of them who
largely advertise that it does pay, if ju
diciously pursued, and many of them
have given their testimony in its fa
vor. If the reader will take up auy Of
the city paper* from day to day for
years, he will find the columns filled
with the announcements of leading
business house*. They do not coine be

goods in tiie market, but if he fails to
invito custom or make known the in
ducements he cun offer he is sure to
drop behind iu the race, while his
sharper neighbor is reaping a rich har

As to Value Received.
Tiie idea used to be prevalent among
a certain class of business men that
spending money for advertising
amounted, in effect, to throwing it
away. There is little question that
there is more or less ground for ibis
belief in isolated cases, where the ad
vertiser does not take the proper means
for scouring solid returns for his An
nouncement!. The results secured in
advertisiitg depend very largely upon
the sagacity and enterprise displayed
by th! merchant in selecting his me
dium and preparing his announce
ments. A long and uninteresting
‘ad,” devoid of leading features or at- 1
tractive arrangement, cannot be ex
pected to produce satisfactory results.
Ah advertisement appearing in a paper
in the month of May, calling attou
tiion, with much detail, to a new stock
of winter goods, does not impress the
reader in a way calculated to bring re
sults to the advertiser; or, if the re
sults come, they are not apt to be of
the kind desired.
Merchants should change tlieir an
nouncements frequently, and each ad
vertisement should tell something in
a brief and pointed way. And, above
all things, it pays, in advertising, to
toll the simple, unvuroislied truth.

A Matter of Memory.
As a rule, it is best for the advertiser
to confine each announcement to a
few leading articles. The average
reader remembers one or two facta,
briefly and thoroughly impressed,
with greater ease tliun a larger num
ber running through a somewhat ex
tended announcement. In the cose of
a merchant, the first thing to lro done
is to attract the buyers to his store.
Whcjn the buyers come there, if the
mesichant cannot sell them it is his
fault; And not the fault of the news
paper or of the advertisement. The
tendency of the time U toward brief,
pointed, “meaty” matter, whether it
be of literary, newsy or business na
ture. The object sought by every ad
vertiuer is to induce people to read his
announcements. An attractive ad
vertisement containing not too much
iter, and calling attention to » few
Kilties or leaders, is, all tilings con-
ired, apt to be read and remembered
e largest number of individuals.
