EASTERN STATES.
New Yokk, Nov 7.—Not since war
times have i lie Republicans swept the
Eastern States an thqy did yesterday.
The size of the victory grows as fuller
returns coitao in.
In no State and in no city have the
Democrats been able to check t he st ara-
pede of the voters to the Republican
standard-bearers, in rock-ribbed Re
publican States like Pennsylvania, enor
mous pluralities have been pileu up,
and in States like New York and New
.lersey, which are usually classed in the
Democratic column, the Republicans
have made a clean sweep.
The latest estimates from Pennsylva
nia indicate that the plurality of Uau.
Hastings will exceed 210,000.
Levi P. Morton has carried New
York State by close to 160,000, defeat
ing David II. Hill, altera phenomenal
campaign. The Congressional delega
tion, which stood It* Democrats to 15
Republicans iu the Ffty-Third Con
gress, will be 29 Republicans and 5
Democrats in the Fifty-Fourth Con
gress. The State Assembly will stand
101 Republicans to 24 Democrats.
In the Middle and Eastern States
Dunocrutic Congressmen seem to have
almost entirely disappeared. In tho
►is New England States there is ap
parently only one Democrat, elected
to Congress, Fitzgerald, of Iioston.
New York has live and Pennsylvania
twr—a total of eight Democrats out of
one hundred members.
In Connecticut and Delawuro big Re
publican gains have been made. Iu
West Virginia William L. Wilson,
chairman of the Ways and Means Com
mittee, has been defeated.
Even Tennessee has gone Republican,
and Governor Turney is defeated by II*
Clay Evans.
In New Jersey, the State Legislature,
with the exception of four Democrats,
appears to have been captured by the
Republicans, and John P. McPherson
will be succeeded by a Republican in
the United States Senate.
Senator Camden, Democrat, of West
Virginia, will also have n Republican
successor. The next Senate will be
Republican.
MIDDLE AND WESTERN STATES.
Chicago, Nov. 7.—A survey of the
returns of yesterduy’s election confirms
the hasty estimates and partial re
turns of last night.
In the West, Northwest, and on the
Pacific coast, the Republican landslide
seems to be overwhelming, and in the
Southwest Republican gains are re
said of Iowa, although the Democrats
of the Hawkeye State have n prospect
of saving one.
The Slate of Washington is Republi
can by 9,000 to 10.000 plurality, includ
ing the Congressman.
Idaho’s contribution to tho landslide
2,500 plurality, and the Congressman
from that State.
North Dakota has indorsed the Re
publican ticket bv 1,000 to 3,000 plural
ity, aud iu the Territory of Oklahom a
the Republicans have elected a delegate
to Congress by a plurality of 2,500.
So much for the States with Republi
can pluralities.
Turning to those which retain their
allegiance to Democracy, there are still
evidences of the prevailing trend of po
litical opinion.
Arkansas returns a solid Democratic
delegation, but bv a reduced plurality.
In Kentucky it is possible and even
probable that Ashland district, hereto
fore tho bulwark of Democracy, will be
represented in the Fifty-Fourth Con
gress by Mr. Denny, Republican. This
will, however, be due more to the dis
affection of Hreckinridgo Democrats
than to any growth of Republican sen
timent.
In Louisiana the Democratic plurali
ties have been cut down to such an ex
tent that the Republicans clnim two
Congressmen, whether upon good
gruunds or not the otlleiul count will
determine.
A DOCTOR'S PHILANTHROPHY.
Cft-
Down in Texas tho Republicans, for
tho first time, have made a fight with
tho hope of winning, and as a result
two Congressional districts, the Tenth
and Twelfth, are in doubt.
In Missouri the prevailing “drift” is
manifest in reduced Democratic plural
ities for the State tickot, and the
claims of Republicans thut they will
gain o»e or two Congressmen.
Mississippi appears to have the lone
some distinction of standing firm in the
Democratic faith. She will elect all
the candidates of that party by practi
cally normal majorities.
How It Is Regarded In Washington
Special to Atlanta Journal.
Washington, D. C., Nov. 7.—From
the latest and most authentic informa
tion, the Republicans have made
clean sweep of the Congressional dis
tricts of the country.
The indications at this writing ure
that the Republicans may organize the
Senate. The latest advices are that
thoy have gained throe Democratic
seats sure, from Kansas, West Virginia
and New Jersey, and have hold all
of their doubtful seats. With Jones,
Stewart and Pefler, who lean to Repub
licanism, they will probably control 40
votes.
Tho following table is made up from
the latest advices on tho Congressional
situation:

Thousands Afflicted by Chronic
tarrh Under Free Treatment.
The first day of November, 1803, Dr.
Hartman gave his consent, to tokv
charge of the treatment of 10 000 onse*
of chronic catarrh free of charge. The
announcement was at once published
in all the leading papers, when the ap-
§ lications came pouring in from every
tate in ihe Union. With a nrgo mini
ber cf clerks and stenographers to as
sist him, the doctor actually directs the
treatment of thousands of cases by cor
respondence, which costs tho patients
nothing, except tho necessary medi
cines, which are obtained at tho near
est d' ug store. To become n patient it
is only necessary to seud name and ad
dress, describe symptoms, and minute
directions us to diet, sanitary n gula-
tions, aud other advice will bo sent
promptly. •
Wherever Dr. Hartman is known the
name of Po ru-na has become a house
hold word. It is safe to say that no
medicine in existence is used by so
many families as Pe-rU-na. This is es
pocially true at ihis time of the year,
when the people are liable to catarrhal
affections, coughs, colds, la grippe, etc.
I'e-ru na has cured more cases of chron
ic catarrh than all other medicines
combitr d. The great majority of t hose
who use it buy the remedy themselves,
use it according to directions, not • von
reporting their case to Dr. Hartman
until after they are entirely cured. Hut
now that a limited nu nber of cases can
secure the personal attention of Dr.
Hartman free of charge, it is not to be
wondored at that, many prefer to do so.
Potunu never fails to euro catarrh
when properly used.
The Pe-ru-na Drug Manufacturing
Company, of Columbus, Ohio, are send
ing free to any address a book on
chronic catarrh which gives the latest
treatment for catarrh, coughs, cold*, la
grippe, bronchitis, and all other affec
lions of head, t hroat and lungs.
The Indianapolis Republican manu
facturer who last week increased the
wages of several hundred of his em
ployees, because of i lie recent improve
ment in business, will probably be road
out of that pat t.y for not waiting u 111
nfter election to raise wages.
Macon Telegraph: “We believe that
Gov. Atkinson has shown himself enpa
ble of rising to the level of any occa
sion which he has been obliged to face,
and we think he will continue to show
that capability. A man of nnconiablo
ability, of courage, of linn convictions,
familiar with politics and politicians,
yet devoted to tho inteiests of the peo
ple, wo expect to see him develoji into
one of the best Governors tho State
has had, and not less u good Governor
nor less useful in every respect because
ho may not find his path so smooth a
one as huvo the Governors who preced
ed him."
DaDgrer From Catarrh.
The most important feature about
that very common cornn’ain , eatanh
in the head, is its tendency to .develop
into somo other more serious and dan
gerotis disease. Tho foul matter drop
ping from the head into the bronchial
tubes or lungs is very liable to lead to
bronchitis or consumption, that des
troyer which causes more deaths in this
country than any other disease. As
catarrh originates in impurities in the
b’ood, local applications can do but
little good. The common sense method
of treatment is to purify the blood, and
for this purpose there is noprepatation
superior to Hood’s Sarsaparilla. Tho
powerful action of this medicine upon
tho blood expels every impurity, and
by so doing euros catarrh and gives
health to the eutite organism.
According to the Republicans, free
wool was to ruin tho American sheep
raiser, and the rest of tho tariff bill to
shut up American factories and rodueo
wages all along the line. How good
Republican authority is,on such sub
jeets may be judged by existing facts.
The American sheep-raiser, owing to
the increasing demand, is getting more
for his wool than for some years; fac
tories which have been idle are starting
up in all directions, and manufacturers
nro voluntarily raising wagos. Lot tho
doubting voter ponder theso things.

It is thought thut official ' returi- s will
show a Republican plurality of 140,000
to 150,000.
Colorado has repudiated Populist
doctrines and swung back into the Re
publican column, eh ding the full Re

In Illinois tlie Democrats have met a
crushing defeat. Not only lias the
State shown a preference for Republi
can candidates, as expressed by some j
40,000 or 50,000 plurality, but the Con
gressional delegation lias been turned
over almost bodily to the Republicans,
Wnliam M. Springe* going down with
his party in the Seventeenth district.
The ciry of Chicago, too, has cast 25,-

TIi--Legislature is Republican on a
joint ballot, aud the result of the bal-
lotings a complete reversal of the po
litical situation.
Indiana is in the fall fashion, too.
The returns are incomplete, but there
seems little reason to doubt that the
Republican State ticket will have from
20,000 to 25,000 plurality, and the vie
