NERVOUS PROSTRATION.
How to Prevent anil Cure This Prev-
nient Affliction.
Heredity has much to do with nerv- !
ona disorders. If one’s ancestors have
been a long lived race, phenomenal vi
tality is often inherited, and with this
aid much can be prevented or cured. If
the opposite is the case, however, no !
paiiiR should he spared in endeavoring
as far ns possible to counteract any pre
disposition to disease. Of the methods
by which nervous prostration can he
prevented one of the most important is
to have three good, varied and well
cooked meals per day. Take plenty of
time to eat them. No meal should bo
eaten in less than half an hour—or, bet
ter still, even an hour, especially for
dinner. Good cun ho derived, too, from
the surroundings and conditions under
which the meal is taken. Food is worse
than wasted which is taken into the
system when laboring under great ex
citement, grief, anxiety or other dis
torting conditions. Above all tilings
avoid all highly seasoned foods—many
of them are productive of far more
harm than good.
A proper amount of sleep at night
time is another preventive. Take eight
hours’ sound sleep. By this I do not
mean merely eight hours in bed, but
eight hours’ restful slpep. If you do not
fall asleep easily, or the sleep is broken
or restless, or yon lie awake for an hour
or more lifter going to bed, you should
remain in bed ten hours. To endeavor
to get along with less than the natural
amc'vintof sleep is simply courting nerv
ous disorder.
It has been found, too, that many
peoplo become broken down nervously
because they are bored and worried by
the vexation of a restless and purpose
less life. Overwork is bad, but want of
work is equally harmful. To worry and
fret over trifles has undoubtedly a great
deal to do with nervous depression.
Every woman should get a certain
amount of modernto exercise in the
open air. It makes no difference what
kind is taken so long ns it exercises all
the muscles and is not followed by a
sense of fatigua The question is not
what exercise you think yon ought to
have, but what you can endure. If you
find yon can only walk one hour each
day without becoming futigned,. then
that is enough. If yon cannot take
much exercise, then walk half an hour,
but if half an hour’s exercise exhanstil
yon so that you do not quickly recover
after a short rest then yon are in need
of a doctor.

Empty and wash Che fish with care,
but do not open it more than is neces
sary, and keep on the head nnd fins.
Stuff it with forcemeat, sew it up and
rub it all over with the yolk of an egg
nnd u little of the stuffing. Put into
the pan in which the fish is to he baked
about a gill of vinegnr, and in this baks
the fish for about an hour and a half.
How to Wn«h Chamois Glove*.
The proper way is to wash them in
tepid water, taking care to use plenty
of white soap. They can either be
washed on tho hand or off, though it is
easier to get at them by wearing them
nnd using n nailbrush. They should be
rinsed in strong tepid soapsuds and
not in clear water, because that takes
out tho oil and makes the gloves hard.
The more they are washed tho softer
nnd finer they become. They should
never be wrung out, but rather pressed
out. and then they should he rolled in
a dry towel. Keep changing the towel
until all of the water is absorbed, and
before the gloves nvo thoroughly dry
put them on the hands.
How to Prevent SprinB Fever.
To prevent spring fever a large
amount of exercise in the open air must
be taken daily. If quinine, a blood
purifier and a liver medicine are taken
daily and if the alimentary canal is
kept clear, spring fever will not bothet
any one. If the blood and tho organs
of the body are in a healthy condition,
spring fever is impossible.

Tlir Smart Tannic Wife.
Young Mr. and Mrs. Smith were pre
paring to make a visit to friends for a
few days. Their baby was only 2 months
old, bnt was an important member of
the family just the same. Mr. Smith
wns up stairs and Mrs. Smith down
stairs, putting on her tilings and get
ting ready to start. ‘ ‘Hubhv, ’' she called
out to her tetter half on the floor above,
“please bring me my gloves 1 They are
lying on the'dresser. And bring me my
overshoes and veil and that hatpin lying
on top of thp chiffonier and a few of
those animal crackers for baby, and
don’t forget, tho baby’s toothbrush.”
Poor hubby had a hard time finding j
everything his wife wanted. Ho was a
long while making his appearance and
finally his wife called to him, “What
is keeping you, dear?”
“Oh, that confounded toothbrush for
baby 1 I have everything but that. ”
Then Mrs. Smith laughed. “You silly
duck,’’said she, "did you not know
that I was only joking? The- baby,
bless her dear little heart, hasn't a tooth
to her name. ”
That was why hubby got so mnd nnd
“said things” as lie was coming down
stairs. A man never likes to have a joke
played on him by his wife.—Pittsburg

Rider Haggard, in his imaginary pic
tures of underground horrors, has told
nothing tlint .would equal the true Btory
which a single misstep wonld furnish
ill Willis' cave. A stream of water
pours from tho rock, and, pursuing a
devious underground channel for a
quarter of a mile, emerges into n vast
chamber with a slanting, slippery floor
inclining to a sink hole in the center.
Down this hole the stream pours and is
lost forever. By means of ropes nnd
weights the sink hole has been sounded
to n depth of 400 feet, and still the
bottom has not been reached. The room
is surrounded by a narrow ledge of
rock, on which daring explorers have
made a complete circuit. One step off
the ledge upon the slippery floor wt^k’l

tomless pit.
Connnniiitlon anil Fre*li Air.
It is a matter of common knowledge,
says an English exchange, that the late
Sir Andrew Clarke cured himself of
consumption by living as much as pos
sible in the open air. The principle in
volved has since been generally recog
nized by the medical profession, witli
the result that tho old bud practice of
keeping consumptives in warm, stuffy
rooms has been almost entirely aban
doned! It is fresh air which is mainly
responsible for the cures worked at such
places as Davos, where tho patients
spend 14 hours n day out of doors,
] breathing cold, bracing mountain air,
while they are exhilarated by bright
I winshino. The result is that each dis-
| eased spot in the lungs is cut off from
! the healthy tissue by a ring of Stretched
j cells, across which disease germs cun-
not pass, and so tho malady is arrested
until the strengthened body cun over
come it.

An Englishman traveling in Mary
land hud occasion to investigate tlm
running time of the trains that passed
through the small place where lie was
stopping. Carefully searching a time
table lie found apparently that there
, would be an express train due at 4
o’clock that afternoon. The English
man was on time with his grip, etc.,
and so was the express train. The in
tending passenger watched it approach
and thunder by the station at top speed.
The traveler was unnoyed, and, turn
ing to a colored man who stood neur,
remarked:
“That train didn’t stopl”
“No, sir,” replied the colored citizen
cheerfully; “didn't ev’n hes’tate.”

A man who did not know how to read

offense to be unprisoned until he
learned. The next prisoner could do
both, and h^ was sentenced to stay
in jail until he had taught his prede
