A GOOD INVESTMENT. J
The County Commissioners made a
good trade yesterday. They sold the
county poor farm to Mr. C. T. Sewell
for $3,000, and purchased from Hon.
W. B. Berry for the sum of $4,410 a
fine body of timbered land just out
side the corporate limits of Newnan.
About two hundred and twenty acres
are contained In the purchase, which
is known as the old Wootten place.
It has a wide frontage on the line of
the Central of Georgia railway, and it
is estimated that the timber alone will
more than reimburse the county the
amount paid for the land. As most
of the timber is original growth and
very fine, tills estimate is not nt all
unreasonable.
The objection to the poor farm
proporty, for purposes of public utili
ty, is its remoteness. It is eight
miles from the county-seat, and most
inconveniently situated. The County
Commissioners deem it best, for many
reasons, to have the poor farm located
more nccossibly, in order that they
may exercise n closer supervision in
the care and management of llie in
stitution, and we think they linve
acted wisely.
Buildings will be erected ut once
npon the new purchase, and by tiie
end of the year it is likely that the
Commissioners will be ready to trans
fer the inmates of the poor farm to
more commodious and comfortable
quarters.
THE STATE ELECTION.
The success of the Democratic tick
et in Wednesday’s election by a ma
jority of 70,00U was not only a bril
liant victory from a party standpoint,
but a splendid Indorsement of the
prosent State administration, In its
every department. It was also sig
nificant as showing tiie almost com
plete disintegration of the Populist
party as a voting force in our State
and county contests, and as empha
sizing the folly and futility of a di
vided white party in a State whose
voting population is almost half black.
This result verifies the forecast made
by Tiik Herald and Advertiser
four or live weeks ago, wiien we pre
dicted that tho Populist party would
not be able to elect its ticket in more
than half n dozen counties of the
State.
Wo are glad to see our Populist
friends again in the Democratic har
ness, and extend thorn a most cordial
welcome.
ttKCENTi.Y the Appling county
gWtnd jury Indicted every merchant
in Baxley for selling or furnishing
cigarettes and cignrette material to
minorH. The indictments were re
turned in accordance with the charge
of tho presiding Judge, who announc
ed his determination to put an end to
the cignrette evil, so far as selling or
furnishing to minors was concerned.
The action of the grand jury croated
consternation among the merchants.
It appears from the official record
of the Weather Bureau, which has
just been given out at Washington,
that the late Gulf storm totally de
stroyed 3,030 houses on Galveston Is
land, killed or drowned over 6,000
persons, and entailed a property loss
of $80,000,000. The record further
shows that the wind velocity ranged
Irom 100 to 120 miles an hour—the
highest ever recorded.
Hon, J. M. Tkkrkll was the orator
of the day at the opening of the Cot
ton Carnival in Griflln yesterday. We
do not need to be assured that bis
speech was a good one.
Seventy thousand majority for
the Democratic Htate ticket, while
considerably below tiie normal voting
strength of the party, is sufficiently
copious to be comfortable.
At this distance from the scene of
ampaigu activity it looks very much
like a groundswell for Bryan.
Deafness Cannot Be Cured
by local applications, rb they cannot
reach tiie diseased portion of the ear.
There is ouly one way to cure deaf
ness. aud that is by constitutional
remedies. Deafness is caused by nn
iulUmed condition of the mucous lin
ing of the Eustachian Tube. When
this tube is iufiamed you have a
rumbliug sound or imperfect hearing,
and when it is entirely closed, Deaf
ness is the result, and unless the in
flammation can be taken out aud this
tube restored to its normal condition,
hearing will be destroyed forever;
nine cases out of ten are caused by
Catarrh, which is uothiug but au in
flamed condition of the mucous sur
faces.
We will give One Hundred Dollars
for any case of Deafness (caused by
catarrh) that cannot be cured by
Hall’s Catarrh Cure. Send for circu
lars; free.

The Election.
The election Wednesday for State
and county officers was so quiet and
uneventful as to scarcely attract at
tention, while the vote was unusually
light. In the forenoon the clouds
threatened rain, and many farmers
who bad open cotton in the field
waived their right of suffrage in order
to get it picked out. A large number
of voters remained away from the
polls on this account, and others were
apathetic because there was no con
test of importance. The only issue of
consequence was the proposition to
float $40,000 of bonds tor the purpose
of building a new court-house, but
even this question failed to interest
the voters of the county to the extent
anticipated, and the requisite two-
thirds majority was short by several
hundred votes. It Is not known as
yet whether the County Commission
ers will call another election, or pro
ceed under the recommendation of
the grand jury and levy a special tax
for the purpose named. It is within
the power of the Commissioners to
adopt either of these plans in carry
ing out tiie recommendation of the
grand jury ; but, as a large majority of
the votes cast in Wednesday’s electiou
were favorable to bonds, thus indors
ing the action of the grand jury, the
Commlfisioners may conclude to raise
the amount required by one or more
special levies.

Black Cheviots—

It’s always hard at the beginning of a new season to
know just what is going to be worn. Everybody thinks
of Serges and Cheviots as staple; and so they are, but !
this year they are even more so. Black Cheviot is far j

ble of all things we are selling for tailor-made gowns.
Homespuns—
50c. to $1.25, (for Street or Hack Wear.)
You have seen these weaves before, of course, and
you are likely to see them for some time to come.
They wear well—they look well—they are worn—it's
worth your while to pay as much as you can—nothing
better for '‘rainy-day” skirts. We will have a lot of j
ready-made “rainy-day” skirts next week. The Oxford

Waist Materials--
Our idea we copied from one of the extremely swell
New York man’s patterns. He was asking $2 per yard,
36 inches wide. Ours are the same width imported goods
—polka dots—and the exclusive block patterns, $1 to

Millinery.
Our formal display ended Wednesday, but the Hats are here—
what weren’t gobbled up by our more than usually pleased visitors.
Come to-morrow and all this week and next, and you will see such a

half our show—we begin to be business-like to-morrow—25c. to sky
