BRYAN Ad A IN BEATEN. , The Republicans were again victori ous in Tuesday's elections, and for the third time Mr. Bryan has been defeated for the Presidency. The Democracy made heavy gains throughout the West and Middle West, hut the gains were not decisive enough to give Mr. Hryan the electoral vote of the States em braced in this territory, which indeed proved to be the real battleground of the campaign. The only gains thnt counted for anything, save the pulling down of Republican majorities re corded in former Presidential contests, was the election of Democratic Gov ernors in the States of Indiana, Ohio, Minnesota and Nebraska. In Indiana and Nebraska the Democrats have also gained control of the Legislatures, and will elect United States Senators. In Indiana, Ohio and Minnesota, howev er, the Democrats were badly worsted in the Presidential contest, Taft carry ing Indiana by 10,000, Ohio by 76,000, and Minnesota by 80,000. Missouri, which had been confidently claimed by the Democrats, went for Taft, and the Republican candidate for Governor was elected also. Maryland is in doubt, the votu being very close as between Bry an and Taft, with the chances rather favoring the latter. Official returns from all other States give Taft 319 electoral votes and Bryan i5G; neces sary to elect, 242. It is useless to speculate ns to the causes that brought about Mr. Bryan’s defeat. Many theories might be ad vanced, and each theorist would proti- abl.v contend and believe his theory to be the correct one. But theoriz ing can do no good now. We are con fronted by the cold, unsentimental fact that the Democratic candidate has been again beaten badly beaten. Loy al Democrats throughout the country lament his defeat, and will sympathize with him personally : but the defeat of the party's candidate does not by any means signify that the party itself is moribund. The principles of Democra cy are as enduring as the everlast ing hills, and will live. The spirit of Democracy will continue to flame in the hearts of the American people, and our faith they will yet come into their own. The electoral vote by States is as follows: TAKT. California 10 Connecticut 7 Delaware 3 Idaho 3 Illinois 27 Indiana 15 Iowa 13 Kansas 10 Montana 3 Maine 0 Massachusetts 1G Michigan 14 Minnesota 11 Missouri 18 New Hampshire 4 New Jersey 12 New York . 39 North Dakota 4 Ohio 23 Oregon 4 Pennsylvania 34 Rhode Island 4 South Dakota 4 Utah 3 Vermont 4 Washington s . 5 West Virginia 7 Wisconsin...., .* 13 Wyoming Money “talked’ with its customary insolence in Tuesday’s election, and a large majority of the voting popula tion of the republic acknowledged its potency by again casting their ballots for the candidate of the g. o. p. O, the times! O. the people! What’s the use? The people don’t seem to want to rule, even when they have the chance. Maybe Bryan got “rained out’’ Tues day night. Anyhow, the elements were mighty contrary, Tuesday was a damp, had day for De mocracy. ____________ Shall the people rule?
