The Newnan News Isaued Every Friday. J. T. FAIN, Editor and Publisher SUBSCRIPTION RATE. $1.00 PER YEAR. OFFICIAL PAPER OF COWETA COUNTY. ’Phono No. 20. OFFICE UPSTAIRS IN THE WILCOXON BLOG Tin* News will stake a eoca-cola against a year's snlisfripliini to the Herald and Agoni/.er, oil this proposition: That said paper will refuse to print in its eolninns its honest eonvietions as to who will enrry Coweta eonnty for governor. A Japanese author lias been furnishing daily installments of a serial story to a newspaper in that country for the past eight years. Charlie Daniel ought to employ him to tell the sniveling public about the troubles of the Atlanta News. Again the Herald and Adver tiser is essaying tlie familiar role of political prophet—a role, how ever, in which the II. and A. does not impress the public as it once did. The public lias learned in recent years that the II. and A's. political prognostications are not ; infallible, A vote for any man in the race for governor, except Hoke Smith, is a vote for Clark Howell. A majority of Georgia's voters evi dently favor Hoke Smith, and the 1 News lines not lielieve they are go ing tobccpjoled into electing How ell by dividing their votes among the other four candidates. particular the resultant of partici pation and experience. Of this latter fact the New s is immensely proud. The News is a newspaper—a business enterprise- not a politi cal hand-organ w itli monkey attach ment. The News’ editor is a journalist and a business man— not a machine finished pollytieiau. The primary functions of u new s paper are three—the printing of news, tlie publishing of legitimate advertising, tlie rnaintenuuco of an editorial page devoted to frank and honest discussion of matters of public interest and to expression of the paper's honest view s in ref erence to these matters. A news paper is not fulfilling a proper func tion nor discharging a duty to the public w lien it iH'comes a political pack-horse, and any newspaper i> most unfortunate which has a pol itician a> tlie controlling spirit in its affairs. I’ollytieks and politicians do not worry the News. They merely furnish diversion and afford amuse ment. Sometimes the News strolls among the cages in the political m.'lingerie and prods the animals with u pitchfork. At this panic- uiar period the News is engaged in that delightfully diverting pas time. The News lias no regret Is-cause it does not shine as a political wiseacre—such as the Herald and Advertiser. If the News’editor had been a professional pollytieiau for twenty years or more, he would, undoubt edly, have acquired by experience some of the overpowering political w isdom which glorifies the exist ence of the II. and A. The Herald and Adver tiser ought to be able to answer this simple question; because, first, it is an infallible political prophet; secondly, il has tried to muddy tlie waters ami work up sentiment for all of the candidates except Hoke Smith.
