McMichael Bill For Local Op tion in Education Fought by Corporations That Resisted Payment of the Tax. There is considerable comment i Picnic Season is Upon Us. Two picnic parties arrived in Atlanta yesterday. One was com posed of the children of the La- Gtange public schools and the other was a union Sunday school picnic from Moreland with 360 Sunday school children and teach ers from this enterprising city on the West Point road. Grant park The Southern Railway Company has blocked the collection of the district school tax. In Henry county seven out of fourteen school districts voted in favor of local taxation. The Mc Donough school district had even gone so far as to build a handsome new brick school house on the strength of the vote in favor of the plan. When preparations were made to collect the tax an injunc tion was filed by the Southern Railway, charging that the bill was unconstitutional.—Fitzgerald Enterprise. , , _ was the objective point of these in educational circles of Georgia ngsters> but the rain greatly over the action of the railroad cor-, jnterfered with th „ enjoyment of porations in fighting the local | lhfi mUe oneS) and much of the schoal tax authorized under the New Armill building. This bill was passed by the legislature and is in effect, a law authorizing any dis trict of any county to tax itself for better school facilities. The Southern and Central railroad at torneys objected to paving the tax and the result of their fight against it is recently a decision of the court knocking it out, which de cision, however, has been appealed to the supreme court and must be passed upon by that body before the law is rendered invalid. The railroad corporations, it is understood, are the only objectors on record against the school tax. Over 50 districts in the stale have already voted to tax themselves for better school facilities, in one instance only four votes in the district being cast against it. The railroad attorneys, however, de cided to fight the law on the ground that it came in conflict with the law by which the counties of the state are authorized to as sess the school tax. The South ern and Central’s legal counsel in Atlanta, Dorsey, Brewster & How ell, were in correspondence with state officials regarding the tax for some time, and following this correspondence suit was brought in Honry county to resist the collection of this tax from the road. Judge Reagan sustained the contention of the road's at torneys and if his decision is sus tained by the supreme court the school system of the state will iose all the benefits designed by the McMichael bill, It is admitted that the law should be amended if it is not con stitutional, but the comment that is general over the state is directed in the main against the railroad corporations which claim to be such great agents of progress and advancement but which embrace the first opportunity to resist pay ment of their share of an educa tional tax which all other individ uals of the state seem perfectly willing to pay. The decision of the supreme court in the matter will be awaited with considerable interest by the educational factors of the State.— Atlanta Journal. morning was spent among the stores in Atlanta. The picnic season is now on in earnest and will continue during all of the summer months. At lanta seems to be a particularly popular place for holding these picnics this year, ns the railroads have booked more Sunday schools and social and fraternal organiza tions for this summer than ever before. Most of these picnic par ties come from the towns and smaller cities on the Atlanta ter minal roads within a distance of forty or fifty miles.—Atlanta Con stitution, May 5th. Ingram-North. Mr. and Mrs. Columbus North announce the engagement of their daughter, Mattie Lou, to Mr. Rob ert Alva Ingram, the marriage to occur at the home of the "bride in Sharpsburg, Ga , on June 6. This announcement will be read with general interest, as both the young people have hosts of friends all over the state. Miss North is a young woman of great beauty and charm, while Mr. Ingram is one of the leading merchants of Sharps burg and has a bright future be fore him in the business world.— Atlanta Sunday Constitution. General Wright is AH Right. As Comptroller General Wright climbed upon a Fine street car this morning, Clinton Brown said: There is the luckiest man in the public life of Georgia. He don’t have to run for his office, except to comply with the law in that re spect. He has held his place—one of the most difficult and important in the state service—for twenty- nine years and no sane man in the state would run against him unless that were the only way to escape a sentence of death.”—Atlanta News.
