cotton is seriously injured by the
rains, and the yield will be sur
prisingly short. Even in this sec
tion, careful investigation shows
that while we have a most luxuri
ant weed, it is poorly fruited, and
many bolls are rutting. Then add
to this the lazy and tritling negro,
with his exhorbitant demand for
picking, and one can readily see
that those fellows who are count
ing on any big cotton crop this
year will be grievously disappoint
ed, We have no idea that the
South will produce more cotton
, than last year, while the demand
tor lhe staple has increased by
| half a million bales in the last
twelve months. So our farmers
need not get frightened about be
ing forced to sell their cotton be
low ten cents. All that is neces
sary is to keep a stiff upper lip,and
don’t be bulldozed into turning
loose your bales. The next sixty
days will tell the story. Hold
back your cotton to the last mo
ment, and don't let a pound leave
your control, It nur southern
farmers will remain firm and unit
ed. the price of cotton is as sure
to advance as that the sun will rise
in the east and set in the west,
Hold to your cotton, Refuse to
sell at the price offered, and you
will get at least ten cents, and we
believe more.—Southern Field.

Wc have this week carefully in
vestigated the cotton situation.and
can assure our farmers that so f ir
from any bumper yield being made,
the crop will be one ot the shortest
grown in years. Reports from
Alabama are that cotton is very
, spotted, and a much smaller yield
| than last year is indicated. And
l the farmers of Alabama have de-
! termined not to sell for less than
ten cents, knowing that they will
get at least that price, with a pros
pect of something better as the
season advances, and the true con
dition of the crop is known. Re
ports from Texas and the Missis
sippi delta are very discouraging.
The boll weevil is extending its
depredations, and excessive rains
have caused many bolls to rot. All
over Georgia cotton is seriously
injured by a vegetable fungus,
which causes rot and decay. Re
ports fiom South Carolina are that
Docs it Pay?
Does it pay fo advertise? This
'question is only ask'd hy those
who have only had slight experi
ence with “printer’s ink.’' Those
who have had long experience with
advertising have found that it pays
and handsomely. The proof of
this lies in the increase the pros
perous, successful merchant had
given from year to year.
If advertising did not pay, the
! many millions of dollars yearly
•expended' would be decreased
I rather than increased.
The appropriation for advertis
ing of the large concerns are in
J creased because they found that it
was the thing that not only made
the business what it is, but kept it
up and daily made it larger. I once
heard the proprietor of one of the
iargest patent medicine concerns
in the country—a concern now
spending annually over a hall mil
lion dollars a year for newspaper
advertising, say: "If I stopped my
advertising I would expect to fail
inside of ten years, for J know that
advertising is the main thing I
have besides my formula.”
This appeals to all lines of busi
ness.
No matter how small your busf-1
ness is—monev for advertising in |
proportion to your income should
be spent—if you hope to grow.;
Think it over—and you will con
cur with those that know—that it
is a great thing, all you have got
to do to see, is to try it—and be
convinced.—Augusta Chronicle.
