To the Democratic Voters of
Georgia.
The approaching Congressional
election ol November 6, is but the
preltn’c to the momentous contest
ot 1908 Dining the intervening
two years, the preliminary struggle
between the two great parties will
take place upon the floors of the
two Houses of Congress, Party
lines will be tightly drawn, party
principles will be discussed, party
records assailed and defended
The plan of campaign lor 1908
will be mapped out on both sides.
The chief arena for this prepara
lory contest will be the floor of the
Mouse of Representatives. There
will be assembled the popular
body, Its members freshly elected
by the people; there the brunt of
the fight must be borne by our
Democratic representatives. There
too, will he presented and strongly
urged the proposition to reduce
the representation from the South
ern States; an issue at this junc
ture full rtf evil omen to the
South.
'The Democratic membership of
the House is largely made up from
the States of the South, and our
representative!) are constantly crit
icised and assailed on the ground
that the number of votes by which
they receive their election is not
at all in proportion to the popula
tion represented Our Republican
critics on the floor of the House
scornfully ignore the explanation
that the real size ot the vote is to
be ascertained from the returns of
our Democratic primaries They
cunningly decline to consider any
vote except that cast in the regu
lar November election; and upon
those figures thev base their as
sault upon our present representa
tion.
Ft is therefore actually of more
vital and far-reaching importance
to the Southern members and to
our people, that a full vote be cast
in the legal election than in the
party primary that precedes it. A
lull Democratic vote cast at the
coming election on November 6th,
will be an effectual reply to the
taunts of our critics and possibly
end their efforts to reduce our
membership m the lower House.
Not only so, but it would hold tip
the hands and strengthen the
spirit and courage ol every South
ern man upon that floor.
Clearly then it is the duty of
every loyal and faithful Democrat
in Georgia to go to the polls and'
cast his vote in the November
election for our party nominees.
We have a solid Democratic dele
gation in Congress of whom any
State might well be proud, Jeal
ously guarding our rights and ever
ready to defend and maintain
them, our representatives are en
titled to the cheering endorsement
of our full parly vote.
The Democracy of Georgia was
never in healthier condition or its
rank and file more closely united, j
The old party, steadfast and un
shaken defender through these
long years of all we hold dear, is 1
girding its loins for the deadly
grapple of 1908. If we show our
strength now, it will count for
much then.
So then in behalf of our party
nominees, in behalf of our party
unity and discipline, and as a fit-1
ting and inspiring prelude to the
great battle of 1908,1 call on every
Democratic voter in Georgia to put
aside all else on the 6th day ol
November, go to the polls and cas
his vote. He surely owes this
much to his State, his party, his
home and himself.

Tlu* older wo grow, the more the
heart protests against artilicial
living the strenuous existence, and
the more we long lor the simple,
natural life.
The 1 *o> who Imtes the chores
on the farm, and who longs to get
to “the city where opportunity
dwells,’’ thinks lit* will never
want to sct> the country again; hut
after years of artificial life in the
city, straining and struggling for
wealth, he is surprised to feel a
great craving in his nature for the
old farm. The things which in
the past seemed like dry, dreary
drudgery to him, now take on a
tinge of romance, and he longs for
the scenes of boyhood, to Ik? back
with the lambs, the chickens, and
the colts. The meadows, the
brooks, the liills, trees—all have
taken on a new charm and mean
ing, and in his imagination he
smells the fragrance of the new-
mown hay and the fresh perfume
of wild (lowers, and sees the glis-
toning of the jeweled dew in the
1 grass. All these things haunt
him, until he buys back the old
homestead, or farm; for a piece of
’ land of some kind lie must have.
Nothing else will satisfy him.
Force ourselves how we will to
lead a strained, unnatural life, we
can never get entirely used to it.
It is never satisfactory. There is
a yearning for the simple life, for
the natural life, and, for most of
us, country life. We want to feel
Mother Earth, to breathe the fresh
air, to drink in the beauties of
(lower, of Held, of mountain, and
of sunset, which never tire or pall
upon the mind.
This hungering for tin* soil is as
natural to us as our breath, be
cause it is part of us. We feel a
kinship with the thoughts of the
Creator, written in llower, in
grass, in trees, and in His multi
tudinous expressions of Jove and
beauty in nature. We feel that
these hills and mountains and
streams and meadows, these val
leys and (lowers are our relatives;
that we are all thought** of the
same Creator; and that there is a
relationship between us which
even tlit' money mania and the
scramble for power can never quite
crush out of our nature.
The longing to get back to the
soil, the craving to get away from
the artificial life, and to get back
to Mother Earth, to the simplici
ties of life, prevades all classes,
and is especially felt by those who
were born and reared in the
country.
1 have recently heard of a rail
road man who has spent most of
his life trying to work to the top
of his profession, and who says
that li is one burning ambition is
to own a little chicken ranch,
where lie can care for the chickens
himself.—<’otton .lournal.
