County News Items Interesting Facts Gathered During the Week by Our Regular Correspondents. \ GRANTVILLE. There was not much lightning here Tuesday, but enough to put twenty- five 'phone* out of business. Mrs. L. P. Winter was called to At lanta last Thursday by the illness of her sister, Miss Coralie McAvoy, and has remained there since, though she is expected home to-day. Miss McAvoy is slightly better. The monthly missionary programme at the Methodist church Sunday was presented by Mrs. F. T. Meacham’s class, and was full of life and interest. Mrs Turner lAgsetter, of Atlanta, visited ber parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Hopson, last Thursday. Mr. Crawford Davidson, now of Blakely, Ga.. and whose parents for merly resided here, was in Grantville the first of the week. He is now an expert typewriter repairer. Col. W. A. Nall, of Elberton, visited his mother, Mrs. F. T. Meacham, the first ef the week. Miss Mazie Gantt, of Andalusia, Ala., it spending some time with her sister, Mrs. J. A. I-atimer. Miss Lottie White returned home Monday night, after spending some time with friends in Atlanta. Mr. Jim 1/ester, of Atlanta, is spend ing the week with his parents, Mr. and Mra. T. M. Lester. Mrs. D. B. Lambert and Miss Mell Lambert spent Monday in Atlanta. The weather took on winter ways Tuesday. The wind got to the north east and blew so cold that one felt like hovering over the fir*-. The rain came in gust* and showers. The thermome ter went down to within four degrees of the freezing point Tuesday night. Mrs. Ross Barton, of Alexander City, Ala., is visiting her parent. , Mr. und Mrs. Ivey Sewell. Rev. L. I*. Winter spent Sunday night and Monday in Atlanta. It will he a great accommodation to the persons interested if parties who owe The Grantville Observer any amount, large or small, will settle the same us soon as convenient. Every dog is said to have his clay, and the first day of April is supposed to belong exclusively to practical jokers. Mrs. U. E. Hopson and Miss Gordie liopBon spent Tuesday in Lutherville. Passenger travel on the railruuds is perceptibly smaller than uhuuI. “There is nothing half so sweet in life as love's young dream.” That was what some one said a long time ago, and there are folks here who will be lieve it. At least, one would suppose they did from the way they do. And it iH a sail day in any man or woman's life when they no longer believe in love. Mrs. Rebecca Louise Lester died Saturday night at the home of her son, Mr. T. M. Lester, in Grantville. She had been ill for a week with pneumonia, and the end was not unexpected. The remains were taken to Newnan on Mon day and interred in Oak Hill cemetery. Funeral services were conducted by Dr. E. W. Stone, pastor of the First Baptist church of Newnan, to which she had belonged for ninny years. Mrs. Lester was S.'l >ears of age, and had been a widow since the Civil War, her husband dying in a Federal prison. She is survived by two children, Mr. T. M. Lester, of Grantville, and Mrs. J. I. Scroggin, of Newnan; also by two brothers. Rev. Harrison Jones, of Hampton, Ga., and Mr. T. F. Jones, of Dodson, and one sister Mrs. Sallie Dennis, of Buchanan, Ga. She left eighteen grandchildren ami twenty- three great-grandchildren. She was greatly beloved by those who knew her, and many floral tokens of affection were placed upon her casket. TURIN. Mrs. G. B. Wilkinson and children, of Newnan, are on a visit to the former's parents. Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Hunter. We were in Senoia Saturday, and it was distressing to witness the ’havoc wrought by the recent disastrous fires in thst town. Five splendid residences were swept away in the space of an hour, leaving desolation in the wake of the devouring (lames. Not only was valuable property destroyed, but there was much (damage to such household effects a* were saved from destruction. We sympathize with all who suffered from tms disaster. Mr. and Mrs. Wra. Gay, of Sharps- burg, and Mrs. Bluford Arnold, of Standing Rock, were guests of the writer's family Sunday. Col. R. W. Adamson and family, of Carrollton, visited relatives in Turin and Senoia on Friday last. Mrs. H. S. Rees, sr., had a severe fall one day last week and was pain fully hurt. We are glad to state, how ever, that she is recovering from her injuries. Farmers were engaged last week in applying nitrate of soda to their wheat and oat crops, and the effect has been wonderful. Everybody is planting corn this week. Sugar cane bedded for seed was dam aged by the late freeze. One man lost Foil worth of seed cane. Mrs. J. B. Shell, sr., is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Tom Ezzard, at Ros well. Quite a number of our people are in- disposed this week, Mesdames Xeb Christopher, J. B. Walker and G. 0. Scroggin all being confined by illness. Rev. W. W. Drake, of New Orleans, La., was the guest of his brother, Mr. B. M. Drake, this week. Mrs. Byrd Dominick made a visit to Grifiin Sunday. Miss Norma Jones is spending a few days in Grillln, the guest of her sister, Mrs. C. Owens. March Hist. WELCOME. A large crowd attended the entertain ment given by the Welcome Dramatic Club Friday night, and everybody pro nounced it a success. The sum realized will go towards improving the school- house. Miss Macie Carmichael, who has had charge of the music class at this place for the paBt six months, closed her school Friday and returned Monday to her home near Moreland. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Hutchens and Missis Frances Hutchens, Nannie Rut land and Kate Smith, of Newnan, were | visitors here Sunday afternoon. I Messrs. Ewen Chandler and Jim Lane and Misses Lucile Chandler and Ida Lane, of Corner Branch, attended , the singing here Sunday afternoon. Mr. A. B. McKoy lost a valuable horse one day last week, j Mr. Marvin Morrow happened to a serious accident on Thursday last. ! While whittling with a pocket knife he accidentally cut his left wrist. The point of the knife penetrated the pulse artery, cuusing such a fiow of blood that a physician had to he called in to treat the wound. He is now getting along nicely, and we hope will soon he , able to return to school. Mr. Tom Dickson and Miss Macie Carmichael visited friends at Handy Sunday afternoon. a Miss Lucile Chandler, of Corner Branch, is visiting her aunt, Mrs. Pete Morrow. The singing given by Miss Rebecca Dickson Sunday night was much en joyed by those present. Mr. ,1. B. Hutchens, of Newnan, con ducted a song service at Providence church Sunday, and we enjoyed some fine singing. Mrs. C. D. Grimes and Mrs. J. E. Quite a number of Madras people at tended quarterly meeting at Andrew Chapel Saturday. Mr. J. R. Wise was in Atlanta on business Friday. Mrs. W. R. P.edwine has been quite ill for several days. Miss Effie Cavender, of Palmetto, was the week-end guest of her aunt, Mrs. J. C. Lewis. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Atchison visiter! relatives in Newnan Saturday and Sun day. Mr. N. M. Morris was in College Park Monday. Mrs. J. M. Ferrell and little daugh ter, Minnie, and Mrs. J. C. Herring spent Saturday in Newnan. Our school will celebrate Easter Fri day afternoon with a short programme consisting of recitations, to be followed by an egg-hunt. The following pupils were on the honor roll for March, viz: First grade. Francis Coggin; second grade, Willis Arnold; third grade, Georgia Coggin and Loyd P.edwine; fourth grade, Caro line Arnold, Amma Cook and Lena Fer- reli; fifth grade, Anna Arnold, Bob Arnold and Word Redwine; seventh grade, Lucile Coggin, Jennie Bell Brown, Marion Herring and John Ter rell. March 31st. SHARPSBURC The district meeting of the W. M. S. will meet at Sharpsburg on Wednesday after the fourth Sunday in April. Mr. J. W. Cole, of Moreland, spent Sunday with his brother, Mr. J. R. Cole. Mr. Alton Glass and family, of At lanta, were the week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Cole. After a pleasant visit to relatives and friends in Fayetteville Mrs. W. L. McLean and two youngest children have returned home. The Woman’s Missionary Society met this week at the home of Mrs. Estep. After a very interesting programme delightful refreshments were served. Mr. J. R. Cole is on the sick list this week. Mrs. R. M. Stevens spent a few days in Atlanta last week. Dr. H. McDonald, of Manchester, was a recent visitor here. Mrs. J. R. Cole, Mrs. G. S. Hardy, and Mrs. A. J. Vineyard went up to Newnan Saturday. Dr. and Mrs. H. G. Wallis moved this week to Fayetteville, where they will make their home in the future. They have many friends here, who re gret very much that they have made this change. Mrs. S. W. Glass is convalescing, after an illness of several days. Mrs. T. A. Bridges spent last week in Newnan. Mr. Horace Haines, of Senoia, visit ed relatives and friends here last week March 31st.
