Southern Farmers’ Opportunity.
Tho Houston (Tex.) Post says that
while students of political economy in
the North are anticipating with mis
givings tho immediate effect upon Nor
thern industries that the end of the war
must bring, when the vast trade in
munitions will stop and readjustment
of industry and commerce follow, the
South will be confronted by no such
difficulties if our farmers, now pre>
paring for the year's crops, take heed
of the plain demands of the situation,
"Their problem is simple,” says The
Post. "It can be summed up in the
five words: ‘Beware of too much cot
ton.’”
The Post continues:
"They Bhould understand that there is
yet in the country much of the crop of
fast year, and that it is becoming in
creasingly difficult to export it because
of the lack of ships.
"PriceB are not going higher at pres
ent, largely because of the unused
stock. Not only is a lack of shipB pre
venting a full volume of exportation,
but as the war progresses there is a
steadily diminishing ability to buy.
England is looking to her colonies to
supply much of her needs, and the col
onies in the present time of Btress will
come first.
"Happily, our Southern farmers can
not only diminish their cotton produc
tion without Iosb, but they can diminish
it and make money by substituting
other cropa. The way is becoming
clearer day by day.
“It is important, of course, that they
have learned that the greater quantity
pf grain, forage and edibleB they pro
duce, the greater the net profit on their
cotton. But where formerly they found
diversification difficult because of the
requirements of bankers, merchants or
landlords, they now find the bankers
and merchants willing to aid diversify
ing.
“Many bankers are ready to advance
reliable farmers money with which to
buy brood sows, dairy cows, poultry
stock, and even improved seedB. They
are willing to advance reasonable credit
upon the basiB of products other than
cotton.
"There is no longer any doubt that
grain and forage pay, because experi
ence haB taught the one-time one-crop
farmers that when they feed their own
stock and supply their own tables, they
have net returns from cotton that they
cun put to their credit in the Bank. Be
sides, they find they got more and bet
ter things to eat, and more comfortB of
life generally.
"Now is the critical time for the far
mers of the South. It is the time when
they must resist the temptation to plant
too much cotton. The crop of this
year ought to bo under rather than
in excess of that of last year. The
acreage in grain and forage ought to be
greater, and an investment in hogs
ought not to be neglected.
"Whether the war continues or ends,
there is leBs need of cotton. More will
depreBB prices. Less will hold prices
steady, or increase them. To pursue
thiB course means prosperity for the
South, regardless of what may happen
elsewhere.
"The day of tho Southern farmer’s
deliverance will have dawned when his
own farm supplies his table and feeds
his stock, for then his cotton will be
'velvet.' "
Thero haB been no time in tho history
of the South when the demands of the
situation were more insistent than they
are at present. If the farmers of this
section raise large crops of cotton they
will And themselves in an embarrassing
financial condition.
In the meantime there iB the boll
weevil, with which they will have to
contend, and even should they plant a
large acreage in cotton they have no
guarantee that they will gather a
crop of cotton. If they should
their financial embarrassment would be
greater than if they had lots of cotton
and nothing else.
Honest Debts.
Dallas New Era.
We believe that the fellow who re
fuses to pay his honest debts is com
mitting as great a crime as the fellow
who robs a bank—in fact, we have
more respect for the bank robber. Of
course, there are hundreds of thousands
of honest men who can’t pBy what they
owe. We mean the deadbeat—the fel
low who makes It a profession to buy
stuff on credit and uses every method
possible to keep from paying what he
oweB. The credit system is the great
est evil of its kind in existence, and
the Booner people learn to pay cash the
better.
Since the European war began many
people have had to depend almost en
tirely on the credit system to pull
through, and many firms have been
forced to quit the credit buBinesa be
cause they could not obtain credit
themselveB. And there are many peo
ple who took advantage of this condi
tion, and because the merchants could
not credit them when they needed it
most, have refused to pay what they
owed before the war. They forget that
the merchants couldn't buy goods on
credit, and that the wholesalers were
demanding cash from the merchants.
If you owe anything and can pay it,
do so; don’t grumble and make excuses
to keep from paying it. If you are
financially embarrassed, go to your
creditor and have the manhood to tell
him you will pay him just as soon as
you can, and you can rest assured any
sensible man will do the right thing
about the matter.
Just so long as you show a disposition
to do the right thing any man will be
satisfied, for everyone haB met with
some misfortune to cbubo them not to
be able to meet their obligations, and
when you tell him so he will be satisfied,
for you have assured him that the debt
will be paid sooner or later. However,
if you dodge him and go around hiB
place of business, right then he becomes
suspicious of your honesty and appre
ciation. If you cannot pay the debt
tell him so, and mean it, for you might
need his assistance again.

The new play was in rehearsal, and

spokesman said: “Sir, we have come
to ask that a ptrtion of Mr. Brown’s

’What’s all this about? What part
do you want cut out?” blustered the

Plant Velvet Beans.
J. M. Outlcr In Dublin Courlor»Dispatch.
I believe with all my soul that if
your paper could induce every farmer
in Laurens county to plant a velvet bean
between each hill of corn this year you
would prove to be the greatest benefac
tor Laurens county haB ever had.
There Is no way to reach the farmer
so quickly and effectively as through
the columns of the county paper. I ap
peal to you on thBt account to UBe your
every influence to get the farmers of
thiB county to plant velvet beanB thiB
year. Let me suggest that you place in
different spaces in your paper for the
next thirty days in black-face type the
short senten ce, "Plant velvet beans.
This little sentence, made up of three
words, can do this county more good
than any other one thing I know of.
I am asked every day how to plant
velvet beanB. Please say for me to the
farmers that all you have to do is, that
when you plant your corn, simply drop
one velvet bean between each hill of
corn. ,Do that;—bo more;—that’s all.
You cultivate the beans when you
cultivate the corn; it costs you nothing.
Bean seed this year are very cheap.
Then let me beg your paper to use its
influence to get every farmer in the
county to plant velvet beans this year.
Plant velvet beans, Mr. Parmer, be
tween every hill of corn you plant, and
I give you my word of honor you will
never h ave cause to regret it. And if
you will keep this up for two years,
and rotate your crops, you will have no
use for commercial fertilizers.
