Settlement In Arksnsse Had Its Or
igin In the Failure of Italian
Colony Elsewhere.
Tho drnmntlc story of Tontltown In
Arkansas, all that remains of an Ital
ian colonisation plan Instituted by
Austin Oorbln, a New York financier,
about fifty years ago, Is told by Bruno
Boselll In the Century. In the latter
half of the nineteenth century Corbin
purchased large tracts of cotton lands
along the lower Mississippi and mndo
arrangements with the msyor of Rome
to send a aumber sf Italian famlirea
as settlers for tho now colony, which
wss to ho named Sunnyslde.
' In tho now colony malaria (ever, f
frohlcol disease unknown to the Ital
ians, broke out In their new hsblta-
,t!on, and the settlers became panic
stricken. Baring no place to go, they
began sending out appeals to Italian
consuls In tho larger American cities,
but their appeals remained unheeded
until they reached tho ears of Father
Bandlnl, a Tuscan priest of New York,
who Immediately started for Sunny-
side.
Not haring the means of covering
transportation costa If ho wero to tako
them out of the region they were In
tho priest began to lend the Italians
out of the malarial region on foot
They Anally reached tho spot, where
Arkansas, Kansns and Oklahoma touch
borders. They purchased a good many
acres of land with *1,000 they saved,
felled tho trees out of which they built
homes for themselves and a chapel and
named the new settlement Tontltown,
after the pioneer Tontl, who was the
first Italian known to have sot foot In
