a HE BIBLE A LITERARY MIRACLE.
A. J. Hit.
Nobody with any knowledge of Eng
liah literature would dispute tho claim
nf this bonk to etund pre-eminent. In
otliur inngungoa a difference of opinion
may mid does exist ns to which book is
absolutely first. In the case of tho Eng
liali bible thoro can bo no dlfforonco of
opinion. But, while all men liovo agreed
upon this point, probobly very few linvo
' poured to consider what Is involvod in
' thia fact—onn might say a literary mir-
jicle.—alnco it co* bo found in no other
tangimgc; and then, further, the factors
that produced this miracle.
In tvhat was tho Authorized Version so
niirnciduim? First, it wns not the prod
• mt of individual genius like Shakes
pcaro’s plays, for. It wns the work of
. forty seven men, not known outsido- of
this performance for any superlative
talent. Indlvidtml genius, such ns
iahak/'ji|<cure’s, wo may allow to como in
great creative opoclis of untiiro; but that
.forty-seven men could linvo brought silch
» marvel to birth, aud that after no very
dong gestation, wns such n wondor that
the most skeptical mind must stand hum
>blc and -aghast nt it.
The bible Is the most quotable'] book
in all literature; all the greatest elussles
■taken logother have hut a fraction, of
■ •he sayings in tho bible that fnston
themselves in mind..
It 1ms been pointed out that tho con
tinued supremacy of tho Authorized Vor-
«imi has been dun neither to mcro habit
nor to nti unthinking traditional vonorn-
tiun, but to its own great qunlltlcs. For
that supremacy lias iboen maintained
throughout tlie most revolutionary three
hundred years of human history. Tho
whole of science, of .philosophy, of theol
ogy, Mid of social'theory has been in the
•melting pat. Absolutely nothing in the
spheres Oft human thought and belief has
stir Weed 'inertly boenuso It wns aiiclcat
or. venerkblo.
1 Without • the blblo, tho education of
tho child: hr the prosont state of socioty
is impossible. The Old Testament, this
l book of tho childhod of the race, will
always remhlii tho best hook for tho
childhood of. every man. *
Its sale* continue to bo larger than
' thoso of any other book. It moots all
,tlio questions of llfo—It is,harmonious
throughout and is applicable ns a final
authority In all mutters of Jpmmii con-
■duel, to till nges and to evory country.
Professor Phelps, of Yalo University,
in a lecture at. Princeton on'.the literary
aspects of tlio bible, stated among other
things, "There Is no English in the
world equal to that, found in tho 1(111
bible. ”
