So far ns Is known, the Lydians, says Herodotus, first Introduced gold nnd silver coin. The Invention was not far to seek. Treasure came to be deposited for snfety in the temples, where It was consecrated to the care of the divinity by being Impressed with a badge or symbol. The sacred sym bol being accepted as guarantee of value, the pieces of metal so Im| ^>ssed found easy circulation. The curliest Lydian coins extant, deriving, probably from the reign of Gyges (about 700 B. C.), nre benn-Bhnped lumps of nntlve Lydian gold, blenched with Rllver. Bach coin bears on Its obverse the figure of a lion nnd on its reverse the impress of tiie nail-head serving to keep tlio metal in plnee., while being struck. From Lydia the one-sided coin spread throughout the-coasts and is lands of the Aegean sen, each dty is suing coins hearing the symbol of its divinity. In Greece the earliest coins of silver, with the figure of the tor toise on the obverse, nre said to have been struck by Pheldon of Argos. To Solon, about 000 B. C., Is nscrlbed the Introduction Into Athens of the tetrn- drnchm, on Its obverse the head of Athene, on Its reverse an owl. Sparta enjoyed all to itself the luxury of n purely Iron coinage. The Greek', coins from 4S0 to 800 B. C. marked n great advancement in the way of nrt, nnd Anthenlan money was the chief medi um of exchange during this period. Other nations Inter adopted tlielr own coinage, which has continued to Im prove with the advance of civilization. T. 8. RAIL] Physician and-. Among the Madl or Moru tribes of the White Nile In Africa, there ex ists a form of municipal brewery that WpjiU'i’.lMake a great hit among the - thirsts’. ,ln America. A special house IS . Set aSttVe for It, and all the women of tlio tribe spend part of tlielr time in making beer from millet seed. AVhlte men who have tasted It de clare It to be a first-rate drink of fine flavor nnd heady results. The beer Is kept In enormous jurs, and to each jar Is attached a number of gourd dippers. The beer Is free to anyone or everyone, the only re striction being tlint it he drunk in the brewery nnd not with meals. In spite of this freedom the tribe mem bers seldom get drunk. To make sure tlielr .women will stuy on as brew-masters and not go running off with other men from nearby tribes, the girls are taken when ten or twelve years old and laid on the ground while a sharp stone Is used to pry and knock out the four upper nnd lower incisors, The resulting effect Is anything but beautiful—as the Intention was. The clothing of the women consists of a string worn around the waist, and changed only when It gets so dirty that It cannot be seen against the dark skin.—Detroit News. C0MBINETRT WITH “MOVIES” How City of Toledo, O., Attracts Children to Its Museum, for Educational Purposes. In order to attrnct the children of Toledo to that city’s museum of nrt the museum management offers Its lit tle visitors "story hours," gallery talks, music hours, classes In pure nnd applied design and the educational motion picture. Interest In visits to the museum wns first stimulated through the medium of nn organized bird club. Thousands of chlldven have also been brought to the museum during the Inst four years by means of the annual vegetable nnd flower shows In which the children have participated. "The Toledo museum was the first to include motion pictures In Its edu cational plnn when, In the autumn of 1015, the necessary equipment wns presented through the efforts of H. Y. Barnes, then assistant to the di rector," writes Eula Lee Anderson of Toledo. "Tills proved not only n fur ther magnet to attract hoys nnd girls to the museum but a further means of teaching art. During the first few years films dealing with travel, crafts nnd nrt were difficult to secure, yet by diligent search many fine things were made available, including the life of Pnllssy, the famous potter, nnd a beautiful lmml-colored film showing the making of silk. “The policy of tho museum is not to amuse by mean.s of the film, but to educate the child along artistic lines, using only such productions ns are of a distinctly cultural quality.” PLAGUE OF OLD EGYPT BACK Crops of Argentine Province De- strayed by Locusts That Swarm In Uncounted Millions. Shades of the plagues of ancient Egypt 1 Santa Fe province of the Argentine now lias complete faith in the biblical account of the scourge of locusts, for at times millions of these insects "cover the face of the earth,” They come suddenly and without, warning, In great clouds, and settle down on the country. Then the ground resem bles a grent moving carpet. Little damngo Is done at first, though the Argentinians find it inconvenient to have locusts throughout their houses, but ns the Insects move through the country, they dig small holes and lay tlielr eggs. Soon the lnrvne are hatched, nnd at that time, before they cap fly, they nre destructive. By the time they nre ready to leave, every living tiling In their path Is destroyed. Eventually they fly away to parts un known, and the fnrmers have to start their crops over again. Squads of lo cust destroyers, like fire-fighting units, are maintained by thd government to combat the pest, and ranchers nre also responsible for fighting them. Their efforts are almost unavailing, how ever, because of the myriads of the Insects. WHAT’S THE USE? Of course It has boon hot. And it’s going to be hot name more, loo. Next summer It will be hot—maybe hotter than this summer. Who knows/ .Inst now you are wishing for n taste those eolil, frosty mornings, when yon pull tho covers up n little closer, nnd curl yourself into a knot a little tighter, and hate to crawl out of bed to dross for your stuck of wheat cakes and mo- lnsses. The weather stands more abuse than any one thing in creation, but goes on weathering just tho same, never pnyl.ig the slightest hoed to your kicks—ami very little attention to tho forecasts of he Weather Man. Did you over notice who it is that docs the most and loudest growling.' Generally it is the person who cannot —■ will not find anything else to do. Go to the pool-room, where tho electric fans arc buzzing away for dear life. There you will find Mr. Kicker, wiping the heads of perspiration from his brow nnd rursing the climate. Go to tho soci ety Indy’s boudoir and you will find her rubbing on cold cream, and rouge, and faming nnd protesting. Then go to tlio shop where tho real work is done. No fans, no lomonndo or ice water. Plenty of noise mid hustle and bustle. Mr. Worker, for the time being, hardly renlizos there is such u thing ns temperature. He Inis a job to get out, ood the honest sweat pours un noticed from cheek and chin. Tonight, after work, when ho goes home and bathes and stones nnd puts on fresh linen, lie may join- the army of kickers niul wish for a shorter work-day; i id today, while the sun beats down, be says nothing, except, perhaps, “Got on onto my way; I’m busy. ’ ’ But, honestly, tho printer who set up The good old ‘simmer’ time,” wasn’t so far wrong after all, wns lief o CENTRAL OF GEORGIA RAILWAY CO. This Aug. 11. 1921, JOHN P. DUNBAR, Administrator. The Human Species. The human species, according to the best theory X can form of it, is com posed of two distinct rnces, the men who borrow and the men who lend. To these original diversities may be reduced all those Impertinent classifi cations of Gothic and ‘ Celtic tribes, white men, black men, red men. All the dwellers upon the eurth, Par- thians, Modes and Elamites, flock hith er nnd do fall In naturally with one or the other distinction. The Infinite superiority of the former, which 1 choose to designate as the great race, Is discernible In figure, port and a certain instinctive sovereignty. The latter are born degraded. He shall serve his brethren. There Is some thing In the air of one of this cast, lean nnd suspicious; contrasting with the open, generous manners of the other.—Charles Lamb. Credit Belongs to Franklin. Everybody knows that the versatile Franklin was the originator of many things. But few realize that he was the first American cartoonist. "Join or pie,” the familiar sketch of the cliopped-up serpent, with each piece representing one of the Colonies, was entirely the work of Franklin. Even the cutting of the type-metal was done by his own hands. This first newspaper cartoon appeared in the Pennsylvania Gazette, May 0, 1754, and was a device for urging united action upon the Colonies at the time of the French and Indian wars. It may be noted also that he engraved a map of the siege of Loulsburg and published it In the Gazette. This Is said to have been the earliest attempt at Illustrating news.—Asn Don Dickin son in New York Times. Weight of Air. Until very recently nobody knew bow much air weighed. We cannot see the air, and, except when the wind blows, we do not feel it Hence It seems to us to have al most no substance. Yet it is a rather substantial fluid. When it moves at a rate of one hun dred miles an hour It uproots great forest trees and throws the waters of the ocean Into turmoil. If our bodies were empty of air the pressure of the atmosphere surrounding us .would crush us to an Immediate pulp. A room ten feet long, ten feet wide and ten feet high contains 75 pounds of air.
