SOME OLD LONDON THEATERS
1 District of Shoreditch Had the Flret
Building Erected for Purely
Dramatic Purposes.
'■ There was n time, shortly otter the
: first then ter was opened In London,
when the opposition to the new form
ef entertainment was so grent that
an ordinance was passed by parlia
ment for the compulsory closing of
these "palaces of amusement," and
making It a crime to be present as a
spectator at -fi ploy.
This was In 1042, when only two
theaters existed In London, The first
'building specially erected for dramat
ic purposes was built by an actor,
’James Burbage, at Shoreditch, In 1676,
and cnlled the Thenter. A year or so
later a second thenter known ns the
Ourten wns opened, also at Shore
ditch, and those two plnyhouses en
tered to London audiences until the
suppression of the theaters.
When plnys were once more per
mitted several new theaters opened,
Including the Globe, (nt Southwark,
which was built by James Burbage,
the Bono and the Blackfrlnrs and
Wlittefrlnrs theaters.
Probably the most luxurious of these
early theaters was the Fortune, built
by Edward Alleyn, an actor, In 1501),
and bo christened because It cost Its
owner the then fabulous sum, Includ
ing the ground It stood on, of £1,820.
The only Illumination during the per
formance wns that afforded by candle
light, gns being unknown until 1817,
when the first performance by gas
light wns given nt Drury Lane.
SEPTEMBER.
The goldenrod is yellow;
The corn is turning brown;
The trees in apple orchards
With fruit are bending down.
The gentian’s bluest fringes
Are curing in the sun;
111 dusk pods the milkweed
Its hidden silk has Hpmi.
The sedges flaunt their harvest
In every inendow-nook;
And asters by tho brooksldc
Make asters 111 the brook.
From dewy lanes nt morning
The grapes’ sweet odors rise;
At noon the rondB all flutter
With yellow butterflies.
By nil these lovely tokens
September dnys nre here,
With summer’s best of weather,
And autumn’s best of cheer.

Died With Their Prey.
In the extraordinary diatom beds at
Lompoc, Snntn Barbara county, Cali
fornia, occur untold millions of skele
tons of a small herring, while In the
upper stmiii me many remains of pred
atory fish which had entered whut
was once a bottle-shaped bay In order
to feed on herring. This Is evident
from the fact that one of the skeletons
of a large muckerel has two herring

Remarkable Australian Trees.
Among the many pocullnr trees of
Australia nre found the llnine-trecs
rising to nearly one hundred feet; tho
fire-trees, tho only tree that blossoms
scarlet red, resembling u tree on fire;
beef-woods, IcuflosB trees with droop
ing, rigid brnnchlets of the color of
beef and the Indian tigs, n wonderful,
lofty tree of graceful form and bril
liant color.

Just Common Humanity.
The very serious trouble with most
people Is tlmt they ure human, like
ourselves. They react In the same
way under the suntu stresses. They
also want sympathy, and nre looking
for ii friend. They, too, hcurtlly en
joy being appreciated or ut least un
derstood. Burdens that are heavy for
us are heavy for them. It is ns ensy
for them to wutch other people ut

enjoy picnics and parades.—Exchange.
Woodchuck Hard to Capture.
Many woodchucks nre caught In
Bteel imps, but the anltnnl often es

near the Jaws of the trap ns possible,
says the American Forestry Magazine.
Sometimes a woodchuck will pulj the
trap down a burrow ns fur as he can
do so. and goal hhnsolf In; It then be
