THE TOM-TOM ALLIANCE NEAR TO
BREAKING POINT.
Columbia Sentinel, (Tom Watson’s Pa-
per.)
Last year our people were literally
stuffed on campaign promises.
The Legislntuve met: there was a most
pompous inauguration of a new Gover
nor, and tlie, freshly ehosen administra
tion settled down to—settle down.
What campaign pledge was kept?
Not one I
We are told that the State hasn’t the
money to pay for free text-books; but
you must have noticed that such official
deadheads ns Lucian Lamar Knight con
tinues to hold the office of Keeper of
Archives, at an expense to you of about
$8,000 a year, while he himself tours
Europe—there being no archives which
could not be kept by the State Librarian,
You also notice thut Hoke Smith’s
law llrm has been employed to convince
the Supreme Court that your State rail
road should be, by piece-meal, delivered
to the Louisville and Nashville robbers
and murderers.
What is the use of having an Attor
ney-General for the State if he is to
be sidetracked for Hoke Smith ?
What’8 the use of having so able a
lawyer as Judge Hines in your pay if
lie must be shunted out of the way of
a big fee for the repudiated Smith ?
We were- promised, over and over
again, “a clean sweep.”
A new broom was prominent at the
Macon convention, whore those pledges
were repeated, a scant twelve months
ago.
What has been done with that now
broom ?
Claude West was kept in the State’s
pay, and, as it now appears from the
newspapers, lie kept on robbing you.
He wanted to be Secretary of State,
and a master spirit of the Agricultural
Department tried to put him on you ns
custodian of the motor vehicle fund of
more than a million dollars.
Hon. G. S, McLendon did not renlize
his danger, but his lifelong friend did,
and the utmost efforts of my self, Mrs.
Lytle and Grover Edmondson were put
forth to keep in your employ a faithful
public servant
We succeeded, and now you can see
that we ilid you a good turn in keeping
Claude West’s hands off that big pile
of your revenue.
The new broom had a flue chance to
sweep out 800 tax assessors, who have
been confiscating your property.
Did the new broom make a clean sweep
of these confiseators, who virtually fix
their own salaries, and who meekly obey
the despotic orders of Henry Fullbrighti
It did not!
The Atlanta Chamber of Commerce
hatched that confiscatory law behind
closed doors; and their lobbyists rushed
it through tlie Legislature.
The people wore never consulted; the
people were treated with silk-hat con
tempt—by whom I
By the men who dodge their own taxes,
and shift them on to you.
We are told that Governors Harris
and Dorsey got the State into debt, and
that something desperate had to be done.
Then why slot compel invisible mil
lions to come before the law, and pay
their just share of the State’s expenses'?
Why adit to the State’s load of deficit
by employing Hoke Smith, when we have
a better lawyer in tlie At-torney-Genoral ?
Why give the bankers a half-million-’
dollar rake off in tlie discounting of
miniatured rent notes of the Western
and Atlantic railroad?
Can a man get rid of old debts by
contracting new ones?
Can the State become solvent by sac
rificing her best property, maintaining
800 unnecessary officeholders and increas
ing her expenses?
At present 1 make no complaint of
tlie fact that every important appoint
ment has been given by Hardwick to
enemies of mine.
If my friends are not competent to
hold these offices, they should not bo
recognized.
Last year my friends seemed to be
worthy of trust.
A sudden blight seems to have strick
en them.
They have been frost-bitten, and they
have wilted.
That’s all right; we can look to that
later.
I am forced to say that tlie covert
influences which paralyzed the Legis
lature this year could not have been
anticipated by any honest voter who
listened to the promises made a year ago.
ADVISES GIRLS TO KEEP YOUNG
MEN AT A DISTANCE.
Atlanta Journal.
GirlH are advised to keep their young
men friends at a distance by Father L.
Finnerty, of Louisville, Ky., who is
conducting a ten-days mission nt tlie
Immaculate Conception Catholic church,
III his sermon Thursday evening Father
Flnnerty criticized severely tho privi
leges young men enjoy in this day and
time, discussing tho homo problems of
a Catholic family.
Wlint are tlie privileges that young
men may enjoy? I-'tell you that there
are nono, ’ ’ said tlie priest with emphasis
on the 1 ‘ n-o-u-o. ’ ’
Guard your angel daughters from the
freedom that young men may take,” ho
advised the mothers, “Tho thing that
threatens most to drag tho Stars and
Stripes in tlie dust is lack of respect for
women, And with lack of respect for
women and tho sacredness of motherhood
comes probable race suicide.”
He severely criticized tlie courts for
granting so ninny divorces and said that
as fnr as tho church was concerned there
is no divorce. ' J What God has joined
together tliore is no power in heaven or
earth to put nsumler, ’ ’ he said.
