Only a dny ngo, it seems, His hair was gold in radiant glenmg, His mouth a rose for mnuy a kiss As just knee-high he played at this Or that, or lay in joyous dreams Of happy lauds. watch the countless host march by, hear the drum, the shout, the sigh; The cheers ring loud, the cheers ring sweet, They hide the din of tramping feet; My soldier boy, he passes by— I wave farewell. And now has he come back to me— My son, my baby at my knee? Others have had the darkened room, • The quiet form, the silent tomb; But whore he lay I could not be, In that far land. This unknown boy I call my own; With smile on my face they shall hear no moan; shall hold my head up very high France has given me back my own, And never a one Bhall hear me sigh; To lovo and to hold. —Elizabeth S. Montgomery. i>. ——- . . COL, ORMAN POWELL DOING FINE ROAD WORK IN TEXAS. Corpus Christ! (Tex.) Caller. Col. O. N. Powell, county engineer, un der whose personal supervision hundreds of thousands of dollars has beon spent in highway improvements, is a nmu of unusual ability ns a mechanical, civil and structural engineer. Col. Powell ia an indomitable worker, a disciplinarian to the core, and devotes his entire time and energies to doing what ho has in hand. There is no time for excuses and evasions where a given purpose is to be accom plished. Col. Powell served overseas during the great world war with the en gineering corps of the American Army, and possibly it is due to his military training that excuses or evasions are neither expected nor provided for. Col. Powell enlisted in the engineering corps of the American Army, and his promo tion was pap id, earned largely while doing just what he is now doing in Nueces county—building roads and bridges to provide tho enormous armies of the Americans and allies to ‘ ‘ get to ’ ’ the Germans. It is easier Bailing in Nueces county than it was in France. Over there” it was not an infrequent occurrence that roads and bridges had to bo constructed while under lire, and in one instance it was said tho detail to which Col. Powell was assigned had one bridge shelled three times while it was nailer construction, and before the army could cross. Tho personal attention of the county engineer has been devoted largely to the causeway under construction here, and on each visit of the State highway en gineer sand other officials his work and the manner in which tho causeway was progressing, won their unstinted praise and commendation. It was , tho result of the capability of tho civilian of thor ough knowledge, combined with military precision and accomplishment. The ot fice force of the engineer’s department was organized with the same idea of dis cipline and military precision, and as result that department of tho county is a well-regulated machine, efficient to the last ivord. What was undertaken was nc complished. > One of the assistants in the county engineer’s office has recently been se lectod ns engineer in charge of road and bridge work on a large scale in Bee county, and is at present holding that position. He was unknown prior to his appointment, except by his work in Nueces county. He had served overseas with Col. Powell. MOTHER.” The Silent Pnrtnor. Smith in Carrollton Times, 7th inst. On Friday, 28th ult., the fast New- nan Hi team nosed out victorious over C. H. S. by a lone touchdown, which was tlie result of a very unfavorable ileal of the time-keeper, Newnan had the ball near our goal, which our boys held for down with small gains, and tho time keeper, for no reason that is known, gave them three extra minutes of play, in which tlioy finally bucked the ball over in the second quarter. Our boys failed to show the brand of football which they played against Griffin and, Cedartown. Considerable fumbling has been costly to C. H. S., and was so in this game. The score should have been 0 and 0. But just watch C. H. 8. go when they play Newnan at that place! The boys have been promised a coach, and with good coaching we will have a team to be classed among the best. The C. H, S. boys outclassed Newnan in the first anil fourth periods, the other two going to Newnan. ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE OF TRAINS AT NEWNAN. GA. EFFECTIVE NOV. 8. 1921. LUNIE a SHROPSHIRE, Administrator. R. F. D. X, Palmetto, Ga. Jimmie Waite in LeGrange Reporter, 10th inst. Before a crowd of about 1,500 people, including many ardent “fans” from La- Grange, the Newnan High varsity elev en held the fast team from LaGrange High School to a 0-0 score in New nan Friday afternoon. Newnan handed the LaGrange eleven the surprise of their young lives when they trotted out in the arena with the strongest team that they hail put out in several years. Their ofiensive work wus fair, and their de fensive work was perfect. The remark able change in form of the Newnan team is largely due to the fact that she had not played a game for two weeks, and had been saving lierBelf for this game, and to the coaching of Billy Howell, former star fullback on the Georgia Varsity team. This was the first showing Newnan had made this season, and L. H. S. hoys were over-eonfi dent of their ability to give the New- nanites the short end of the score. The defensive work of the LaGrange team was up to the usual high standard, but the offensive was ragged, and three fum hies contributed largely to tho failure of the Blue ami White to score. A re turn game will be played the latter part of November, and the boys are already planning for the game, and laying out to have vengeance for their failure to score Friday. o Don’t put too much faith in. the re pentance that comes after conviction.
