M bile, Auguts 23.—The Register
has kindly furnished the following
the steamer Ocean Waves, alow prs*
sure boat, left the city Sitday morning
with abutit two hundred peursottfi on
ti'.aid fur an excursion to Fish River,
about twenty miles from tho city j
On her return Hup she slopped at Point
Clear, reaching there at 5 o’clock P. y.
The boat was made fast: the hand and !
part of the passengi as went ashore.
After remaining for half an lion-, lie
whistle was blown and iiie pussengeis
had just got aboard when the boiler
exploded with great force, following
witli a rtmdling, hissing sound. Frag
ments of timber and metal flew in everv
direction
The forward part of the lmats’s cabin
was carried cempletely away. The
chimney fell backward toward the
rear of the bout, crushing the upper
cabin, and the boat immediately sunk
witu her bow submerged. About six
ty or seventy persons were killed and
injured by the cxplosian. So far. tho
bodies of nineteen dead, eight ladies
among the number, have been recov
ered. Twenty-eight wo tided have
been brought to the city, and one of
the number, a little girl, has since died.
The scone was appolling, frriifie and
heart- lending. Wilder scri es of gtit-f
have seldom been ti itnhssed. Frarilic
cries aa they lamented fi r their I, st
wives, children, parents and sisters
was agonizing to all who had human
sympathies. Many of the passengers
were little chi'dien, and ninny little
hats and bonnets came ashore to tell of
llte little victims beneath the waved,

surue time w ith both legs broken, nud
a bout reached bim just too late, and
he Went dun ti. Tlie two pilots were
killed. Tho engineer and bis wife
were severely injured, and all the fiir*
men killed.
It is impossible to carn c'.ly estimate
loss. By some it is supposed th it at
least th.rty or forty persons are still
hmied iu the debris of the wreck on
the bottom of the Bay. A divei has
gone to the scene ol disaster. The ac
cident has cast a gloom over the whole
