£|e jfaii'lnint KAii l- J ■ JOHNSTON. Kditoh **dP«o ; « Fairbc-hv, Gk. rou, October 21, 1871. Fit tbe Sontiiicl.] Woman. It is my honest opinion that the time has come* when woman i» hj pietitttf-d the companionship of noble man. Not witbstandi-rttr the lords of creation have erected institutions of learning for themselves: the forum and political arena offers no opportunities for the displuy of woman’s abilities, still the army of civilization refused to move on till injured woman was placed ert equality with the foremost of the ranks The generals, captains nnd privates of the army felt that they might go on i “conquering and to conquer,” yet tne j laurel wreaths wither and fade upon their brows, unless made glorious by the smiles of woman. Consequently it would be useless for tne to urge the necessity of educating the daughters of the nineteenth century, for all are convinced on this point. 1 will not stop toenumerate the books they should read or the studies she should peruse, but will go a step further and point out to the female a field in which she ; can find useful and profitable employ- ; meat. The question, “ Where ran I find honorable und paying labor?” lias doubtless perplexed the mind of every student as she leaves the walls of the College. She looks around and finds to her amazement that the sterner sex have closed her dn< r to nearly every avenue of fame. “ 1 must live,” she says, "si the same time I desire to gi atify a laudable ambition —and what must Ido ? I cannot sei k and obtain offices, for the laws of man prohibit 1 cannot mount the hustings and ne corrupted bv political excitement, for 1 would lose the respect of the good and Inavi I I cannot become an at torney, astonish the Judge and jury— Contend with the learned and the un learned, because every dictate of pru dence and propriety is against it. I cannot compete successfully with a mat. as a physician. \\ li.it then must ] do?’ After this survey, site almost Inpelessly exclaims, “I mint stitch, stitch, stitch, confined within the four wallsof a room. All my bright dreams of glut v and success have proved to lie ft Will-o the v isp, which has led me into the desolate regions aj^left me, ‘Like otto who treads alone, ’ &e. Hold, desponding one, don't give up! Your survey is incomplete. Here is a field where you may find employment, it is not the pulpit, for tiod fills it with these of his own selecting. It is not upon the battle-field, where legions stain their mother earth with streams of blood, but otto lovelier, in which 1 loom the rarest flowers unplucked, bung unclaimed, unmerited, the fuircst diadems, untouched, harps of sweetest no loily. I refer to the field of Southern m th" ship YY’hcfi 1 think of the few V lid bare entered the high esteem in which they are held and the intelligence of i ur people, I um overwhelmed with unutterable astonishment. The demand lor laborers is great and tbe harvest is plenteous. We want those who live beneath the same blight sun with our si Ives, whose eyes first opened upon Southern scenery, whose childhood associations mu parallel with ouis, w In m we can see and know. W eought to rejoice, however, that a few have entered; but 1 regret to say that they have plucked only u few branches and returned to the olive groves beside the silver sticamlets to enjoy the renown tin v have won, too indolent to press on to h glorious inruortulity. Mho will be the Rial to follow their example tind take warning by their fate ? Gome 1,,; wind! Have the will to do and the to ul to dare, remembering if yon tall by the wayside licit your grave will be adorned by Southern bands Will you not convince llu world that you were created for high and noble pur poses ? Are the pinions of your mind too feeble to bear yon to the loftiest pinnacle of fume? V\ Ji at iu to prevent \,,u? May not poets sing as sweetly I eie us in fim. y Italy 1 Make the i if, i t to be an authoress! Let earth grow grey with veins—you will still live —Tour name will be remembered in the roll of ages, while your memory will live in the heart and grow brighter nnd brighter in the sunlight of eternity Girls, let love, poetiv and moonshine n’, me. They arc but trifies when com pared with education and all its ad vantages. First make yourselves tn dependent woman and then look out for a•• Chance." A incus. That [taper and salt color which ren dri r your hair so conspicuous, can easily be remedied by uacit.g a bottle r. two of XATUBT.’a lIAiR RKSTOHATrVV. Quit lilies of a Good Collector* Is on time to a minute when tin debtor says ‘come to-morrow at 9 o’clock 1 Sits on the steps und waits for his return when he Buys, 'I urn jn»t going to dinner.’ Insists *n stepping out to make i-hange when the man ‘has nothing less than a t wetity.’ Will go to nD old stag, r' evets duy for a month with a c' eerful counten ance‘about that little account.’ Doesn’t mind edgeing into a crowd to ink a fellow Will take a dollar in part if he can’t get ten in whole, and ‘credit it’ with thankful alacrity. Always suggests a check when tin money is not in hand, as he can get it ‘cashed’ tomorrow. Always has that account ‘on top’ so the man can make no excuse for put ting him off- Don’t mind asking for it immediate ly after being ‘treuled’—or pleasantly entei tuiued. Is never in a hurry, 'cun wait ti'l you g< t through.’ Cuts off tlie retreat of the dodger by crossing over to inert him, or follows him into u store where he goes to hide. Can cough oi salute when the ‘hard case’ wunts to puss without seeing him. In fine-- is patient as a post, cheer ful as a beck, sociable ns a flea' bold us a lion, weathei-proof as a rubber, cunning as a l x, nnd watchful as a sparrow haw k Columbus Index.
