TEMPERANCE.
Mv idea , of this subject . is to be
moderate, not indulge in anything
to excess. Franklin said, ”Be sober
and temperate and you will be
healthy” The laws of nature teach
that we must he temperate in hab-
jts if we would enjoy health and
bapp j he8s< St. Paul said be tem-
perate in all things. We should be
temperate iu eating, some eat as
if they felt it a duty to devour all
that is set before them.
W * “ ‘“"’•"‘T '* "W
®. n ®' n0 spen, ne piecious ay
thnAgM, nor nle.pZ holy” Set-
bath away instead of attending
Church and Sunday school.
We ehould be temperate in our
joys, and sorrows. And in speech,
if we talk too long, our hearerc will
get tired.
We should abstain from tobacco
in any form, ae that is a useless,
and dirty habit, some will buy it,
and do without meat.
My theme to-day shall be tem¬
perance in drinking no intoxica¬
ting liquors, intemperance not
only injures our body, but the mind,
therefore, he that habitually indul¬
ges in strong drink, cannot be a sue
cess in life.
We want sober Lawyers to de¬
fend our cases in court. Sober Drs,
to give us medicine. Merchants will
not have drunken clerks. Farmers
must have sober men to help them.
Even that curse to humanity the
whiskey seller prefers sobor men to
assist in his evil work. Can any of
my bearers tell me what profess*
ion or occupation does require a
drundard? More murders, robberies
and other crimes committhd by
whiskey, than any other agent.
I bad rather se my brothers laid
in their graves than to know that
they ” put something in their
mouth that will steal their brains”
empty theii pockets, and at last
rob them of their souls.
When I see & father who loves
the wine cup more thau his fam¬
ilies reputation, I shudder to think
of the example he is setting, and
that his son3 are apt to follow
Now I pity a wife, when the one
who promised to love and compfort
her through life, comes home reel¬
ing and cursing like a demon, and
often drives his children with their
mother in the cold.
Young ladiss be careful how you
accept the attention of men who
drink, lest you become heart dre-
ken wives. Young men von may
have education, wealth and recieva
all the honors your country can be¬
stow, yet if you take the social
glass with friends, you are iu dan¬
ger of becoming a victim of the
dreadful enemy, King Alcohol, you
may become so as to sell
your coat for drink, or murder your
best friend. For the sake of those
who love you, pause awhile, and
think, if yoa have a good mother
on earth she prays for her boy,
that he may overcome temptation,
one ot the Apostles said, drunkards
shall not enter the kingdom of
Heaven. (1st Cor.G-10)
Would that nay pen could show
to this assembly the horrowu that
are connected with whiskey.
A lew years ago I had a friend
of a high and intelligent family, a
promising young merchant who
who was pure and good, but alas!
he took the fatal cup, sought wreck-
iess companions, and to-day he is
in the lunatic asylum, whiskey car¬
ried him there. One of my uncles
killed himself drinking.
Can you wonder that I hate liquor
and do all in my power to put it
down? Solomon Said, Train up a
child in the way it should go, and
when it is old he will not depart
from it. Oh Parents, you who from
delicious grapes make bright spa rk-
li.ug wine with which to treat your
friends and bear its praise, notice
how your children thirst for it, j
soon they will crave a stronger
drink.
If you wish thorn sober upright
members of society, be sure their
teachers are.
Win. h way are you going my
brother? which way are you tread¬
ing life’s path or the other that
le&dolb astray?
