FRIDAY FEBRUARY 9, 1894.
Who will be Senator? Tnat is the
question. Will it be Colquitt, or
Northern, or Bacon, or Turner, or
HuBigrton or Crisp? Ah, there’s the
rub.—Rome Tribune.
If Speaker Crisp enters the race
the question will be easily settled.
There’ll be no rub about it, but
he’ll walk right in head and shoul¬
ders above every one else. If, how¬
ever, the Speaker decides not to rur,
then it will take a stronger ,
than either one mention^J above to
defeat Governor Nq*-'h e rn._Haw

Does the Disp a ^ c }j mean to say
that there igf^ stronger man in the
State t(^f tjjg Senate than Mr. Tur¬
ner? /

The people of south Georgia are
confronted with a Stale of affairs,
that, with reference to the guber¬
natorial contest, invites our most
earnest consideration. There is an
immensity of policy in politics.
Let us be sure we are right. Our
comments heretofore have been fa¬
vorable to the candidacy of General
Evans, and we are today confirmed
in the belief that a south Georgian
who does otherwise antagonizes
the best political interest of bis
people, and invites the strongest
opposition of a section, whose co
opperation would lend strength
and success to our efforts iu a time
of need.
Mr. Atkinson is receiving his
strongest aid at tho hands of the
people ol our section, and even
with this his defeat may be put
down as a reasonable certainty. In
this event we shall not only have
opposed one of the grandest old he
roea of our time and suffer an over¬
whelming deleat; but ve inn
that opposition which will defeat
us in an issue more vital to the
people of our section than that for
the governorship.
Mr. Turner’s success is of more
vital concern to us than the issue
between Mr. Atkinson and General
Evans; for in the election of either
of these worthy gentlemen the
Slate wili be duly honored and her
best interest faithfully guarded.
Gen. Evans election is a foregone
conclusion, and if we would consid¬
er Mr. Turuer’s wellfare let us rally
to the Evans boom, end in this we
will invite no opposition to Mr, Tur¬
ner, and perform only a reasonable
duty for General Evans.

Proceedings ol the past week at the
National Capitol.
Washington, Feb. 5.
Fromour regular Correspondent.
Senator Vorhees, by virtue of his
position as chairman of the Senate
committee on Finance, has taken
command of the Wilson tariff bill,
which confounded its enemies by
tie large majority it received in
the House last week. That no time
will he wasted by the committee in
reporting the bill to the Senate is
made plain by these words from
Mr. Vorhees: “We realize that
what the country needs is repose,
and believing that the passage of
the bill will be in the iaterest of
the country at large and will soon
be followed by a revival of business'
activity, we shall do all inj&sf pow¬
er to have the bill disposed of at
the earliest moment possible.” Sen¬
ator Jones of Arkansas, is chair¬
man of the - 5 ub committee of the
Finance committee that will have
iutfiiediate charge of the tariff bill.
He t 1 inks the bill can be reported
ins ; ’ 3 of three weeks. There is one
vet noticeable feature about taiiff
dis„ .ssions here just now-the-know
-it-alls have ceased prophscyir.g
that the bill will be torn to pieces
in the Senate. Another thing (Hat is
exciting comment is the strength of
the income tax in the Senate.
The House discussions of the
Hawaiian question, which will end
tomorrow with the adoption of a
resolution satisfactory to the dem¬
ocrats, brushed away a great many
cobwebs and brought the question
down to a common sense basis, to
say nothing of having brought a
bcut the complete squelching of
the clown of the House, Boutelle,
of Maine.
Tho bond issue ia now an accom¬
plished fact, and the $58,000,000
which will be paid for them will be
in the Treasury as soon as the
bonds can be signed and delivered
at the designated depositories. The
opposition in Congress is quieted
down so far as may be judged by
outward appaarences, although
some of the populists are still bit¬
ter in thi ir denunciations.
Chairman Wilson of the House
War’s and Means committee, is al¬
so chairman of the Executive com¬
mittee of the National Association
of democratic clubs, members ol
which have been notified to attend
a special meeting in this city i a
the eighteenth of this mouth. While
it is not so stated in the call, the
principal object of this meeting is
to help push the Wilson tariff bill
through throuh the Senate, by
means of the organization of the
association of clubr. In other words
the democratic clubs of the coun¬
try will be asked to let the demo¬
cratic Senators know that the Wil—
si n bill meets their approval at 4
should be passed without delay
other than that which is absolutely
necessary. It is hoped that the Fi
nance committee will have report¬
ed the bill to the Senate by the
time the club commiUee meets.
The House committe on Rivers
and Harbors will grant no more
hearings, as the time of the mem¬
bers will be fully taken up in pre¬
paring the bill. The bill will prob¬
ably carry a smaller appropriation
than for a long lime, and few im
provements except those already
under wav will he provided for.
The House committee on Bank¬
ing and Currency decided by a vote
of 9 to 8 not to report a bill for the
repeal of the tax on state bank cur¬
rency. That is supposed to end the
matter for this session so far as
this committee is concerned, but
members of the House who favor
the repeal of the tax may try to
get it before the House asan amend¬
ment to some other measure.
As a specimen of the dodges that
are being resorted to by those who
are op[ osed to the government’s
printing its own postage stsmpa
that of bringing a committee here
with a petition from the New York
plate printers, setting forth the dis¬
tress that would fall upon them
should the government lake this

The committee on Coinage has
favorably reported to the House Mr.
Bland’s bill for the coinage of the
seigniorage in the Treasury and
the issuing of silver certificates a
gainst It. Mr. Bland will endeavor
to get the bill acted upon at once.
It is understood that Secretary
Carlisle favors the bill, and the gen¬
eral impression is ihat it will pass.
The Sundry Civil Appropriation
bill has been reported to the House.
It carries a total of $32,2gl,3S2,
which is $ 9 , 409 , 928 , less then the
bill carried at the last session of
Congress.
President Cievalapd ig'feeirig very
much misrepresented concerning
the nomination of Mr. Peckham to
the-g#Cancy in the Supreme Court.
Having nominated the man he
thirks fitted for the position, he,of
course, would like to see him con
firmed, but he has done absolutely
nothing to influence the vote of any
Senator, and has no intention of
doiog anything. His duty ended
wite making the nomination. It is
a prerogrative of the Senate to con¬
firm or to reject.
From Minnie.
Minnie, Ga. Feb. 4th. Editor
News: Schools are beginning to o
pen up in our county. Prof. Bloom
has charge of the Minnie School,
he enrolled twenty six names to
start with. There are several other
schools in this section. We have
had plenty of rain, and it is making
oats look fine. Log rolling and etc.
are about to be a thing of the past,
though we had the pleasure of at¬
tending another party at Mr. N.
Dormineys, it was like the former
ones, inexpiespable. Our bailiff Mr.
Henderson who euperseeded Hon.
Tobias Bojkiu, is as well equipped
for discharging the duties of an of¬
ficer as any officer iu the County,
he has one of tho finest traveling
hordes in the County. Two of Min¬
nies most intelligent men have
formed co-parduership as loafers,
they are caiching on to the busi¬
ness fast, and are making good
head-way for beginners. i
The people about Minnie are for
Col. R. T. Nesbitt for commission¬
er of agriculture. Hon. D. T. Paulk
who inspected fertilizers under Coi.
Nesbitt’s administration in 1892 &
’93 is personally acquainted with
him, and he says he is the rignt
man in the right place, and he
thinks we ought to keep him there
Mr. Paul* says that Col. Neabit al¬
ways observes econemy for the state
and saves the state several hundred
dollars on fertilizers and oils.
Dr. Dorminey of this place will
soon be off to New York for the
purpose of taking a special course
on some diseases. Dr. Dorminey is
one of the leading physicians of
Irwin County, but he says there is
always room at the top of the lad
