Pure Air and Medicine.
It isn’t drugs or medioines that is
Deeded At all; it is plenty of the purest
air that can be had. Open the windows
and the doors, clear out the cellars and
ventilate it thoroughly, remove the
dampness, the mustiness, the anoient
odor, the smell of decay which greets
the nostrils when one enters from the
health-giving atmosphere out of doors.
Never mind if the outer air bears the
taint of the gas house, the manufactory
or some other unpleasant thing; it is
also mingled with the health and
strength-giving forces of nature, and
is certainly better for the human sys¬
tem than the same air which has been
shut up and contaminated for an inde¬
finite period with no chance for puri¬
fication. Don’t mind even if a little
dust is brought in. A few minutes
with the duster will put the house in
perfect order again, and even at the
worst, dust is not half so bad as dis¬
ease. And as for fear of draughts,
with colds and a thousand resultant
evils following in their train, nineteen-
twentieths of that is imaginary, and
the other twentieth is easily avoidable.

A Washington special says: The
New York sharks have stopped their
raid on the treasury for a time, owing and
to the very low rate of exchange
because of the bond issue to be made
within a few days. Mr. Curtis re¬
turned to New York Saturday night to
make a further deal with the bankers
who are to take the new issue of $100,-
000,000 4 percenters. The issue will
probably not be put out before the
latter part of the week. This is due
to the fact that the administration has
been notified both by London and
New York that the bonds can be float¬
ed easily and advantageously. Bonds
will be put off as long as possible, and
while they are certain to come, the
administration has returned to its first
determination not to issue them, if pos¬
sible, until congress has been given an
opportunity to act. Saturday there
In the senate was
no financial talk. Neither was there
any on the floor of the house, but the
committee on rules has decided to give
the banking and currency committee
another show to pass a financial bill
through the house and set aside Tues¬
day, Wednesday and Thursday for the
purpose. No one expects the Cleve¬
land bill to pass, but the debate may
be productive of good and it is just
possible that some sort of a good com¬
promise financial bill may be put
through.
Many congressmen think that as
Mr. Cleveland has decided on bonds
there is no use in congress wasting its
time debating a band bill. The Roths¬
childs, the Barings and other London
bankers have agreed to take $75,000,-
000 of the new bond issue if made pay¬
able in gold, and Mr. Cleveland is de¬
termined to make them that way.

Patriotic Mexican Students Otter Their
Services as Soldiers.
After a very stormy cabinet meeting
at the City of Mexico Monday night,
President Diaz notified Guatamala,
through its minister, that he would not
concede one iota and Guatamala would
have to give in to Mexico’s demand or
suffer the consequences.
Other Central American representa¬
tives present at the meeting made the
statement to President Diaz that they
understood Mexico was trying to grasp
Central American territory.
President Diaz denied the assertion
and stated that Mexico would have her
rights and the boundary lines should
be as Mexico claims and that Mexico
had all the territory that she needed.
It looks as though the other Central
American republics were behind
Gautemala.
All the government students march¬
ed on the streets with banners shout¬
ing “Yiva Mexico,” “Viva Diaz” and
“On to Guatemala.” They assembled
in front of the palace from 11,000 to
16,000 strong, clamoring for war and
pledging their support to President
Diaz. They were mainly composed of
students of the law and mining and
medical sohools.
Mexico has been preparing for war
for some time, and has about 12,000
troops on the border. All the officers
that hare not been in active duty have
been notified to report for marching
orders.

the famous Winter Garden Theatre. He
was starred with Lawrence Barrett early in

with Charles Thome at the Variety Theatre

and, as everybody knows, led her to fame.
Mr. Norton is now the proprietor of the

One afternoon early in he hobbled
into his New York Office on Broadway and
encountered his business manager, George

that McManus had discarded his cane. Who
