Progression Or Retrogiession?
We would not appear as a pes¬
simist, as may be hastily judg*d
from the above head-line; nor do
we refer to things generally, but
rat,her to things in particular.
We steadfastly believe in the pro
gress of the Christian religon, and
in its ultimate triumph over sin;
but there are other essentials to in¬
sure the luture greatness of our re
publican in-titutions. We may just
]y boast of the inveutive genius of
the world, and with satisfaction
turn our faces to the inexhaustible
riches of our country, yet as we
look to and through and compre¬
hend all this, our fear for the future
is not re’ieved, what then? Men are
disloyal to the trust imposed in
them, and true statesmanship is
waning! A brief reflection over
the past century of our history and
you cannot otheiwise conclude.
Men are vivid intheir imaginations
but not thorough in understanding.
When men graduate now-a days,
they are only fitted for the prepar¬
atory department of an ancient
seminary.
We need higher education and
with this com *s great and deep root
ed convictions. A man without un¬
derstanding has no abiding convict¬
ion, and nevef succeeds in even
mastering himself.
In view of the declining standard
of our education, we can but have
great anxiety for the perpetuation
of our free institutions.

The Commissioners for the col¬
ored exhibit from Florida, have is¬
sued an address, that will attract
attention everywhere, because of its
tone of high intelligence.
Mr. J. F. Stone, of the Savannah
Morning News, gave the News of¬
fice a pleasant call yesterday.
Mr. Stone knows every body in the
wire-grass section, and no one man
ever did more lor the Morning
News in this part of the vineyard
thau he.
Mr. J. VV. Henderson is one of
our most progressive j oung farmers
and is about the only man in Geor¬
gia that can make money on 4 cent
cotton, and there ie no trick about
it, for he just naturally hustles soon
and late, and makes a surplus first
of corn and meat for himself and
all his farm hands. How does this
you fellows who swap three
Hfunds of yo"r cotton before it is
for one pound of Western
meat?

Mr. Editor, I noticed the proceed
ings of the Honorable School board
of our county in your last issue and ;
my attention was called to the fact ;
that the pu lie fund will pay ouly
H cents per day on the pupil when
it has previously been paying 4 and
5 cents per day. I want to ask the
Teachers who have been teaching
for the public funds alone if they
expect to continue thus at 1 ^ cent
perdayper pupil? or I will ask
those p atrons who ha their schools
taught last year for what the public
fund paid do they expect the teach
ers to do the same this year under
the above rates of tuition? certain¬
ly they do not. Well, what is to be
done in order to supply the county

Thomas Bussell.
Your idea is incorrect: the ap¬

SECOND PRIZE.
M. D. Luke Wins. The syrup
prize contest which created suclr a
lively local interest, has been final¬
ly, and we believe satisfactorily set
tied. Samples ot all the entries
were sent to Mess. J. J, & J. E
Maddox, of Atlanta, and they pro¬
nounce sample No. 3 to be the best
and so Mr. Mark Luke, of Inaba,
gets the Southern Cultivator and
Dixie Farmer for one year as sec¬
ond prize. We take plearure in
publishing Mr. Maddox's letter, in
which are some valuable hints for
our farmers who take a pride in
making fine grades of syrup, as
they handle more syrup than all
other firms together in Atlanta,
and whose opinion is the best of
authority, when it comes to judg¬
ing syrup. He says:
Mr. A. G. DeLoach,
Sycamore, Ga.,
Dear Sir:—I have examined the
nine samples of syrup submitted
to me. I find that each one repre¬
sents a good quality of syrup, a
grade that would be sstisfactory to
any merchant or consumer.
The mercantile value of the diff¬
erent samples is nearly the same.
The trouble wa find with moBt
South Georgia syrup is that it is
either too thin or else it turns to
sugar. If the planters can avoid
these two extremes they would find
a better and increasing maiket for
thir product. It is close work to
decide as to the difference of value
of sample of this syrup, but my
best judgment is that sample No. 3
comes nearer filling the quality de¬
manded of a good Byrup than any
of the others submitted to my in¬
spection.
Trusting that my decision will
meet with th? approval of the par¬
ties interested, I am, Yours truly,
J. E. Maddox.

thing® were very dull except at
Marshalvills where tkey are in
hopes of a large peach crop.
It ir the largest shipping point for
peaches in the south if not in the
United States. I saw the* king of
peach men, Saul H. IUtmph, he
told me that he had never seen a
better prospect up till now, as there
had been no warm weather to start
the trees to blooming, and he
thought they would have a good
peach crop which is saying a half
million for ten miles around Mar-
shalvllle, I saw John Byrom ; he
had 400 acres of oats where he had
•owed 600 bus. but the Dec freeze
killed them, and had 100 acres
more sowed and the Feb. freeze
killed them, he raised more meat
more oats and more corn than any
man in my travels, but he says
cotton did not pay last year. He
used 200 tons of guano last year
but will not use more t han 25 this
year. I saw J. J. Murff who used
100 tons last year, will not use a
pound this year. Several others are
not going to use any this year. Now
Mr, Editor if there had aot been a
ton ussd in Ga. in ten years there
would be ten dollars to where there
ia one, everything seems to be cheap
but money, but what is the use for
things to be cheap when there is no
money to buy with. Times will get
better we know when we have got
to fall back on Tom Reed and his
gang (or relief as he will be our
next President if he lives, he will
go in by a larger majority than Mr.
Cleveland did. He will he the figure
head in the 54th congress, so you
keep your eyes on me. Reed for re¬
lief, the present gang has made a
failure and Mr. Reed and his gang
are not mad about it, as it gives
them the pies that has sugar in
them. The people will say long live

all the credit for relief if it comes.
