Marcus Daly, manager of the An-

and democrats should not forget,
fhat it is important that their ef¬

continued until they know that
all doubts have been removed.
The present outlook is that
Fitzgerald will have two charters
to go before the coming meeting of
the legislature. One will contain
a prohibition clause while the oth¬
er proposes to make that subject
alter consideration, and allow
the sale of intoxicating liquors to
be governed on the local option
plan. It is hard to say which
the town wj 11 be incorporated un¬
der as the beat legal talent has
been employed for both charters,
an interesting time may safely
be expected.

EDITOR JACKSON REPLIES
To f‘Citizen” Qf 9, Inst.
■o
Mr. Editor : I see by your
last issue tbat a man under the
assumed name of ‘'Citizen” has
attacked my private character.
1 ne article referred to by Citizen
appeared in the columns of the
Dispatch as an editorial, and as
you did not see fjt to reply to it, I
am forced to ask space in vour
c humus to defend myself from
Citizen’^ attack, and enow things
up in their proper light,
First; he declares that neither
of the editors of The Dispatch were
present the day of tho election.
This I dq not deny, but we suppos¬
ed that most people in this en¬
lightened age knew that editors of
newspapers do not depend alone
upon what they see to fill their
columns. We obtained the infor¬
mation from what we considered
good authority, which we can give
if necessary, Now perhaps we did
the mayor an injustice when we
said that his offjee was a mere sin¬
ecure, perhaps he would have had
more to do heretofore had there
been a marshajl who had the cour¬
age to make some arrests which
should have been made. Citizen
also says that “if anybody fell out
aud abused each other” hs does
not know it. Well, I am not sur¬
prised at that, since he has been
marshall of the town for two years,
and I know of several instances
when the town’s lawp wers openly
and flagrantly violated, and while
everyone else knew it, he did not,
or if he did his memory was so
treacherous thac he forgot to make
a case of it. Now we did not mean
to make it appear that the citizens
of Sycamora are outlaws or ruf¬
fians or anything of the hind ; on
the other hand fhoy are peacable,
law abiding people.
In regard to what Citizen said
about the fine imposed upon me
by the mayor, if he had related the
circumstances under which it was
done I would have had nothing to
say, and am perfectly willing, after
a fair statement has been made, to

-WE DEFY COMPETITION!-
JHU JEFFREY, Manager,
leave the case as it stands, satis-
fled that all fair minded man will
exonerate me from blame; but as
he did not do this, I make the lol¬
loping explanation : There is a
law in your town prohibiting per¬
sons from jumping on or oft mov¬
ing trains. Up to the time of the
incident mentioned I had been a
citizen of Sycamore two years, and
during that time the law had been
a dead tine, and no one regarded
it in the least, never enforced
though violated almost daily, until
one day I accompanied two ladies,
who were gjing away, to tff e debot
and, ofcourse, assisted them qn the
train, and before i d/Jft, fas'J ould deposit
their baggage an off, the cars
were ia motion. After alighting
I was confronted by Cilize^ who
was then he marshall would have and inclined U9ake
ms that tcy a
jease against ipe. Why was I
singled out as an offender whjle
others were allowed to do as l had
done in this respect? Simply to
gratify a personal prejudice
against me by tbat official who
would not come up like a man and
ask for the satisfaction he wished,
y 0 instead of being the criminal
he painted me, I was simply ar¬
rested for performing an act ot I
common courtesy,’ such as any
gentleman would do. I did ple.d
guilty and paid my fine for I had
done nothing to ho ashamed oi.
Of what he has to say about my
past, and his prediction as to my
future, I will say nothing. I bays
shown that his memory 8 bad, too,
and it his future is to be judged
by his past, it will be, by no
means, as white as the driven
snow. In conclusion I will say to
Citizen that It is unmanly for one
to attack another under a pom dp
plume as he has me; he should
come out boldly and say what he
has to say, and not strike in the
dark as he has done. Resp’y.
G. L. Jacicson.
[Now boys, you have both had
the floor and it is now our time to
be heard. Let us act as peace,,
maker and advise you to drop ibis
matter. If, however, u must con¬
tinue, our columns are open. Ed ]
