The untimdy death of Hon

pn a visit to Washington, returned
to Atlanta a few days ago, and
^ays he found public opinion
about equally divided as to the
success of Bryan or McKinley, and
many of the best posted men
frankly admitted their inability to
form an intelligent opinion as to
the result. Republicans will vole;
democrats should do so.
The Tatnsli Journal has recently

and Q. G. Folsom, of Brunswick,
who will continue its publication
at the same old place. Under the
management of Editor McGillis,
the Journal has heretofore been a

as well as the various offices it

it continued success under its new

The vacancy in the democratic

MEET US AT COURT.
Court will convene in Irwinville
next week and, to keep in line
with our old habits, we’ll be there,
We hope to meet with quite a
number of those who havj, since
itB infancy, been patronizing The
News, and others who, at this late
hour, are willing to place their
shoulders against it? wheels and
aid us in pusaing it to a higher
point on the'hillside of journalism,
The News has, heretofore, refrain-
ed from asking for money through
its columns j hut, at a t ime like
this, when almost every business
enterprise must be conducted on
a cash basis, it feels the need of
the currency as distinctly', almost,
as anvother business in the
country, and, for that reason, we
wish to remind our readers of the
fact that if a stray dollar lies rust-
big anywhere in their possession
for want of use, we have a special
use for it that will brighten both
it and The News. So do not for¬
got that we are in a position to du¬
ly appreciate any and all favois
along on that line.

C. S. Boyd, the famous lumber
dealer of south Georgia was arres¬
ted in Atlanta on the 16th inst.,
under the charge of cheating and
swindling and brought to Irwin
county under warrents sworn out
by J. W. Smith and S. A. Thornton
of this place. Aitqr arriving in
Sycamore he claimed to own Greer
Bros. Mill, and other property
which he said he could show or.
the records of the clerk’s books in
Irwin county, lie was allowed
to go to Irwinville to search the
records, but alas! when he
arrived in Irwinville his whole
inclination was, to go to Fitzgerald
for the purpose of employing an
attorney to fight Smith and Thorn¬
ton, in lieu of seeing the records
and effecting a settlement, as he
claimed he wanted to do. Some
think his trip to Fitzgerald was
made with the hope of escaping
from justice, but the officers of
Irwin county were too well
acquainted with the slick lumber
deaier to allow such a trick to
work. He was placed in jail by
sheriff Paulk and was t > have had
a preliminary trial before Judge
Marcus Luke of Irwinville Satur¬
day, but the case was postponed
and set for Monday at 10 oclock
A. M., and Judge Fussell of the
Minnie District was invited to
with Judge Luke, which he did

with honor to the court. The case
of S. A. Thornton V e. C. S. Bovd
was taken up and the evidence
against Boyd was very strong.
S. A. Thornton was represented bv
Col. Busby, of Vienna, assisted by
B B White of Sycamoie and Col.
Hall ofTifton. Boyd was repre¬
sented by Col. D. B. Jay of Fitz-
gerald. Tnere were several wit-
nesses for the state, but Boyd had
no wr,nesses atall. He just simply
made a very weak eatement.. - in
which he claimed to have oaid out
$13,000 in the communities of
Adi burp and Sycamore, during
tsia stay here, while in the mill
business, but faijed to state what
went with the other $37,000 which
he claimed to have'while running
the business—at that time he clai-
rne( ] lo h e worth $50,000— neither
did he say why he cid not turn Dr.
Thornton’s mule back to him when
he failed. After hearing the ar-
guements from the attorneys on
both sides, Judge Luke placed
him under a bond of $1,000, and
not being able to get a single bonds¬
man, was committed to jail to
await the hearing of a nigher
When Sheriff Paulk had posses¬
sion of him in Atlanta, on the 17th
inst., he fully intended leaving
fur Sycamore on the 4, P M. train,
vvhe.i Boyd remarked that if sher¬
iff Paulk and Mr. Smith would
accompany him to his house and
allow him to get some clothing
and explain the matter to his wife,
whom he had married only two
days before, and wait u.itil the 7,
P. M. trait:, that he had $100,
that he would turn over to them as
a payment on the claims hAd
against him. Thinking probably
that his word could be relied upon
for so short a distance, Sheriff
Paulk ana Mr. Smith accompani¬
ed him as he requested linin') to
do, hut after going into the house,
he said : “I thought the money
was here, but it is not.”
He waived trial in the case of J.
W. Smith Ye. C. S. Boyd and de¬
manded un indictment from the
grand jury. There are several
warrents from- the counties of
Worth, Dooly and Fulton awaiting
the result of the cases now pend¬
ing. It is the opinion of the peo¬
ple of Irwin county that some
time will elapse before Boyd will
have the chance ot doing any very
great things in the lumber busi¬
ness again. He will at least have
to answer a dozen warrants for
dishonesty first.
National Prohibition tickets’ are
being throughly distributed
throughout this section.
