ABOUT THE ELECTION
The 3rd of Nov. was the day
{,o decide who should beitbo nerd
president. So far as we have been
able to get correct reports,
McKinley has gone in by a sweep¬
ing majority. There has been no
little orohesying in this direction
for some time but yesterday’s vote
surprised the most extravegeDt
guessere. This will put us under
a republican administration for
the next lour veers, And it is the
honest conviction of many that it
will be a long time before demoo
racy will be able to recover from
this shock, so what we cant remedy
we must grin and endure, When
we look about to find the cau
ges for such land elides in politics,
there are many causes suggested.
And all these taken in their agri¬
gate, help to roll up the republican
upon ua.
We may say first that there is
quite a division or. the money
question inside the democratic
party. There are those who be
lieve that free silver would be very
detrimental to our prosperity.
And they believe this so strong
that they will not vote the strait
democratic ticket. Not a few of
those voted for Palmer iu this
election, but the majority of them
yoted for McKinley. This vote
taken all over thb entire country
Ras a considerable weight. The
democrats are not united them¬
selves.
Then there was a very serious
joss no doubt from the populist
party. The democratic party was
pxpectmg to get a pretty heavy
pole from them, but the fact is
they either voted for Levering or
jor' McKinley, They had made
they considered to be a fair
proposition to the democrats and
they would accept nothing but
{.heir votp. There is no doubt but
that this had its Wbight. What ever
pther benefits may occur to us
from this election, one thing is
pure, it will force us to r unit
somewhere, as long as the south
and south-west are divided and
pplit up as they are, they need
pxpect nothing but such defeats as
the one just met with.
The only thing left for us to do
pow is for every one to do tho best
h® can, for as Franklin has cor*
fectly said ; ’God helps those who
pelp themselves.” X. Y. z.
On meeting of the legislature last
week, the lpllowing officers were
plected : For clerk, Mark A. Har¬
den and Hon. H. A. Jenkins of
^utrnan Co., for speaker.
In the senate, the following offi
pers were elected j
President of the senate, Hon,
Robert L. Berner of Monroe Co.,
and Hon- Bill Clifton of Chatham
Co. Secretary, assisted by Charlie
Northern, In both houses, perfect
peace prevailed, and the organiza¬
tion affeoted with ea«e.
The present qutiook is, that
these two great bodies of Georgia’s
distinguished sops will do honor
to the fair name of our grand old
State. Y/e dQ not know of a day
wliOo these toq bodies were equip¬
ped with men of more intellect or
business capacity. We believe
fhnher that the most of these men

SAD NEWS FROM CRISP.
Crisp, Ga., Nov. 2, 1896.
Mr. G. W. Horten, after an ill"
pesa of about ten days, died at, his
homfi near hero ear | y Saturday
morning. Mr. Horten has a
number of friends all over the
country who will regret to learn
of his death, and the, people of
this community feel that, in this
sad event, they have sustained a
loss which is almost irreparable.
Paralysis was the cause of his
death.
DEATH CLAIMS ANOTHER
Prominent Citizen.
Ocilla, Ga., Nov. 3, 1836 *
After a continued “pell of tp~
phoid fever, Mr. J. G. Roberts, of
this place, wljo was a candidate
for the cilice of tax receiver in the
recent election for county officers,
died yesterday morning.
It is strange to say that out of
the fiive men who made the race
for the above named office, only
one is left wto has not succumbed
to some kind of disease, that one
being the successful candidate, Mr.
C. L. Royal of Inaha. The follow¬
ing are the names of the three un¬
successful candidates, each of
whom, at present, are critically
ill: L. G. Whitley, H. Hopson
and Geo. Menix.
CONE UP HIGHER
It is with sadness that we chron¬
icle the death of Mrs. R. C. Smith
which occurred at her home four
miles east ot this place on the
27th ult. She had been ill for
several weeks, and from the first,
there was a steady decline from
which Bhe never, at any time du¬
ring her illness, rallied. The final
sad hour came like the setting
of the sun: it was a gradual going
down. She was a lady of many
excellent virtues; and her strong
Christian character was such as
to insure the confidence, love
and esteem of all who knew tier.
Her remains were taken back to
Macn County, her former home,
for enterment, where'she was laid
to rest beside qer father and
mother who had preceded her to
the home beyond. Sue leaves no
children, but a devoted husband
and a host, of kindred and friends
who mourn her loss. The bereaved
husband and friends have our
sympathy.
Dr. W. L. Rider, the murderer
of Mias Owen in Tolbotton some
months ago, was taken back to
that place and resonteDced on the
2nd of Nov. On account of some
irregulraities in the sentence he
had to be resentenced.
Mr. Rider is very weak and fears
are entertained that ha will not
live until the day of execution.

Mr Editor : I am not cutting
up like I would it Bryan had been
elected. I am very quiet indeed.
I spent last week in Atlanta;
had a good time; found one ot the
best boar ling houses in town.
I heard Sam Jones make the
biggest talk of his life. I remai¬
ned until I knew that Gov. Atkin»

A DEMOCRAT.
j | Sycamore, Ga., Nov. 3, 1896.
Editor Irwin Co., News :
; When I cart my vote this rnor
j i niug for Hon. W. J. Bryan, I con¬
sider, I voted for one ot the most
noble and patriotic men for whom
u has ever been rny priviledge to
vote (except our beloved county
officers for whom I voted a few
days ago) I feel, however, safe in
saying that the republican proverb,
’’Bryan’s election will produce a
panic,” or as I will say, Bryan’s
election will continue the panic,
is true. But I feel equally safe
in saying that if Bryan’s Instruc¬
tions are heard ia congress and
the senate of The United States
and heeded, prosperity will prevail
with his election and administra¬
tion in about the same propotion
ns adversity has, during the last
administration. The last presi
dental career marks out what the
success of McKinley or Palmer
would be. Respectfully,
M. Powell, Democrat,
The Grand Lodge o f Free
Masons met in Macon Ga., last
week, and elected the foliowing
officers:
J. W. Taylor, grand master.
W. A. Davis, deputy grand
master.
J. D. Harrell, grand worden.
J. W. Aiken, junior grand
worden.
J. M. Rushing, grand treasurer.
A. M. Wolibin, grand secretary.
There were many things done
for the order that may prove to he
of great heniiit in the future. One
of these was the passage of a resot
lution forbidding the lodge to
receive any man who was engaged
in the whisky business. This it
seems ought to have been done
long ago since the object of the
order is the high state of morality
to be found out side of the actual
experience of Christianity.
They also discussed the possi¬
bility of building a home in Geor¬
gia for the dependant Widows and
orphanajjof deceased mason’s but
toon no definite, action ia the
matter,

Mr. Tommie Barker, son of Mr.
W, H. Barker, of near here, while
in the store of Messers. W. R.
Smith & Co., of this place last Fri¬
day afternoon, happened to a pain¬
ful accident which renders him
one armed for the time being. The
step ladder used by the clerks was
left sitting in the center of the
store, and Tommie attempted to
climb upon it to sit down, when it
turned over, giving him a severe
fall and breaking his arm. The
Dr. was summoned, who placed the
arm in position, and at last
accounts he was getting along
nicely.
We have just, received tho intel

Mr. Trumbo in his short stay in

friends who will sincerely regret
to learn of his lliness. We can

serious as reported.
