At the outset of this campaign
we expected, that-during ‘he same
we would get a great many an
nouncements from the candidates
that would very likely be in tiie
j field; but now the October election
' is upon ns, and from the six candi
| datee-in this county and senatorial
j district, we have two announce
ments; viz : A. T. Ifackett for Sen
ator and 11. P. Lumpkin for Rep
resentative, ive hope the friends of
Messenger will remember these
! gentlemen at the polls. They are
both able men, and worthy of the
trust.
We have been informed that there
is a false report in circulation in :
I different portions of the county, to
i the effect that we (the publisher of
the Messenger) asked Dr. Felton,;
during his last visit to our place,
to pay us an account that had al
ready been settled by Dr. Fariss.
We did not desire, nor did not
intend to mention the refusal of j
Dr. Felton to pay us an account
i due the office. But since it is
I necessary for us do so to vindi
: cats ourselves, we give the facts in
the case without comment.
Two years ago we received a card
frmn Dr. Felton, while he was in
Washington City, and before the
adjournment of Congress, announc
ing himself a candidate for Con
[ gress, and accordingly inserted it in
the columns of our paper. All of [
our exchanges in the Seventh did
tiie same tiling. During the same
year we inserted a local announce
ment of a speech to be made by Dr.
Felton in LaFayette. Dr. Fariss
ordered the local put in, and it was
charged to him, and also a similar
notice of his last speech in this
place, and Dr. Fariss settled for
said notices. But the announce
ment of Dr. Felton’s candidacy was
c urged to him (Dr. Felton), and ;
was the account we asked him to
settle. Dr. Fariss never paid this
account, nor was lie asked to do so. !
he knew nothing of it at all, as
the card came to U 3 directly from :
j Dr. Felton himself.
