8329.—L0t it he understood that
we take it ns a loan.
It is eaid that it now looks ne if
the Republicans would win in Ten
nessee.
It is reported that the Sells
Brothers’ circus will go into winter
quarters in Chattanooga.
The latest nows from last Wed
nesday’s election —report all, but
four or five of the counties heard
from, and Colquitte majority as
53,539.
O < »
It is the funniest thing in the
■world to take that table of the Col
umbus Enquirer-Sun, recently pub
lished, giving Norwood exactly 17,*-
080 majority, and compare it with
the actual returns. Try it.
General Shorman has informed
Adjutant General Drum that the
Presidentia’ party will not return
to Washington before the 7th of No
vember. It will be no great mat
ter if they don’t return until after
Hancock’s inauguration.
The tide is with our Judson, —
North Georgia’s honored, fpvorite
son. Let his friends everywhere
work quietly and steadily for the
next three weeks, ns they have for
the past, and a glorious victory is
assured on the 2nd of November,
and don’t you forgot it.
They must be having a lively
time in Indiana, judging from the
following extract from a specii 1 to
the Louisville Courier-Journal: ‘Noth
ir.g like the present politxal excite
ment was ever known in Indiana.
The State is actually turned into,
as Godluve Orth would say, a politi
cal lime-k’ln. In most portions of
the Shite business is nearly entirely
suspended, and business men have
turned their attentions solely to pol
itics. Iu many places in the State
even the women have become so
deeply interested politics that they
are neglecting their household du
ties, and doing ns much campaign
ing as the men. In the northern
part of the State the political ex
citement is if anthing, greater than
in the southern part.’
We are glad to know that Col.
Clements will not accept Dr. Feltons
invitation to attend bis day ap
pointments; and Dr. Felton’s invi
tation for him to do so, at this
stage of the canvass, when Col.
Clemente has appointments of his
own, already announced, for the re
mainder of the campaign, is superb
ly ridiculous.
If Dr. Felton is willing to treat
Col. Clements fairly now —as he
will insist that he is—ufter the pub
lication of the above letter, instead
of inviting him to his day nppoint
*ments, right in that part of the dis
■trict, already canvassed by Col.
pC'lements, why did he not propose

Isn’t If a Fact I
There is one fact in connection
witli this congressional campaign,
that bus not been noticed hereto
fore, that we think every man in
the upper | art of the district at
leant, ought to consider. We al
lude to the fact that Bartow has
nearly always been solid for a Bar
tow man, This fact will in a future
issue of this paper he fully estab
lished from the official record.
Barlow county has had the mem
ber to Congress for about thirty
years, and they have had it by vo
ting nearly solid for a Bartow man.
They vote for Dr. Fulton, not be
cause it is Dr. Felton; not heenuse
he is an independent and opposed
to the organized; not on account of
his record, though for the most part
it he a good one ; hut solely for the
reason that he is a Birtow man.
Now in all fairness and candor, we
appeal to the reasoning, thinking
men of this and other adjacent
counties, in the upper part of the
district: Is this fair? is it right?
If Bartow county is to have the
member to Congress, and nil the
honor and advantages to be derived
from it forever, what is the use of
holding an election for Congress
man every two years ? why not
elect Dr. Felton or some other Bar
tow county man for life and he done
with it? Walker county has never
had the member to Congress since
the county was organized, and now
that the honor is o fie red her, we
feel assured that to be true to hcr
sell and her best interests she will
come up solid on the 2nd of No
vember for the Hon. J. C. Clem
ents.
Tuo Thin.
Col. Clements at the opening of
the canvass asked Dr. Felton to
jointly discuss the issues of the
campaign with him, but Dr. Felton
flatly refused to do so, saying that
he would not do s» then or any
other time. This was at. LuFayette.
Now the campaign has pro
gressed favorably to Col. Clements,
and on next Monday, tne 11th itist.,
he speaks in Cherokee county, and
will stay in that county about n
week, making several speeches. It
is very important for him to can
vass that comity, us his acquain
tance is limited, and Dr. Felton j
knowing how fust Clements malice ;
friends, is anxious to keep him out
of Cherokee. Therefore lie writes
the following letter, which is pub
lished in theCartereville Free, Frees:
“Cartkrsville, Ga.. Oct. 4th,
1880.—Hon. J C. Clements. —Dear
Sir : I am informed that you and
your friends are complaining that i
I declined a discu a sion with you at
LuFayette and other places in the
district.
As I have no intention to give of- I
fence in this matter, I cordially in
vite you to all of my day appoint- j
inents throughout the district, from j
this time until the day of the elec- j
tion. I will divide time equally I
with you at these appointments, a |
list of which you will see published
in tiie Cartersville Free Frees of this
week. Very respectfully, your obe
dient servant, W. H Felton.
He invites Col. Clements to his
day appointments —day appoint
ments, indeed—and that too right
in the parts of tiie District over
which Clements has just been, and
where ho lives and knows nearly
everybody—in Walker, Chattooga,
Gordon and Floyd. He would call
Clements ofl from the lower end of
the District, where he is compara
tively a stranger, hack to his own
counties, and only to his day ap
pointments at that. Why this
limitation to the day appointments?
In the elegant language of the clas
sic Shnkespear, “this is too thin.” —
