Tin: HEBBENOER. A. Mi'll as, Killtor. V. A. Mi'll an. I’nii. mill Pro. LAFAYETTE GA„ NoW 18, 1880. The vole of tbe Seventh Cor gres fitmnl District was larger than that it.'soy other District, hy n consid i■ruble number. Rob Toombs has lieen making speeches, olid Hun Mill w riting let t, rs for a long time, and still the democratic party lives. It is the unanimous vtrdict of the State press that the S,tilth should make polities secondary to national progress nntl prosperity hereafter. Thursday, the 251 h instant, has I teen proclaimed hy President lines. Its a day of thanksgiving to (ioil for the. blessings bestowed up on our favored country. A matrimonial boom K"eiiiH to have taken possession of Georgia. It looks like everybody is getting married. This is no doubt an in fallible sign of prosperity. Hill Arp was in the Macon /</(,’- 1/,-u/i/i when the dispatch announc ing Felton’s defeat was received. — ( lie remaiked, “We’ll have preach ing at our sehool house now all the year round.' 1 Tin Home 'lfiliiiiu thinks “mi in dependent manufacturing and com mercial future is the next thing in order fur the South, in this line she can be solid if her people con clude to he so.” The Hon. A. H Stephens’county w°nt f r Garfield. No wonder. Didn’t Stephens on one occasion pay a glowing punegetic to Grant and didn’t Grant carry the Garfield party around in his breeches pock et? For one thing we have to he thankful—the country will a.uin have a president who has tfeecn. — It is also possible that, Mr. Garfield nray not he as bad a man as the Republican papers represented him in 1873. “Ripplet,” the Cedar Creek cor respondent of the Newnan Atkerlis <r, writes that paper, that a white man in his pieciuct at the late elec tion scratched Hancock and voted for Girfield, on the ground that Garfield and himself belonged to the same church. The l‘re.->kleutlal electors will meet at their several state capitals and cast their votes for president and vice-president on tin. first Wednesday in December. Con gress is directeJ hy iaw to open and count these votes on the second Wednesday in February, and to de clare the result. The Augusta Sues remarks that “the solid South didn't get its Presi dent. hut it raised nearly six mil lion hales of cotton this year, worth at least forty dollars per hale, suv thp modest sum of two hundred and forty millions.” At that rate, if the southern people will only keep their money at home, the“pov ertv-striekeir South” will .soon cease to be poverty-stricken. Texas lias won the banner which ! she gave Georgia four years ago for polling the lurgert Democratic vote in a Prisidential (lection. In the contest i.l IS7G Georgia gaveTildcn over SO.OOO majority, and Texas about -10.000. This year Texas vo teJ 70,000 majority for Hancock, and Georgia about dirooo. The Rag is now deposited in the execu tive office in Atlanta. Justice Smith said on opening h : s court at Connorsville, JVnn., “William 11. Smith is arraigned for assaulting his father." 'Pile * magistrate had the previous day knocked his father down with a club, and it was himself that he was iiriaigning He continued: “The evidence is conclusive,mu' I’m lint suie hut i ought to semi my self to jail for ten days. Hut as this is my first ofience and I cer tainly had a good deal of provoca tion, I simply impose a fine of ten dollars.” - Hancock carried every Southern State, and New Jersey, Nevada and California. The Electoral vote is as follows: Garfield. 214; Han cock, 155. Popular vote: Garfield, 458,342: Hancock. 442.000 The vote of New York would have elec ted Hancock. Next Congress will st ind Republican 149; Democrat 140; Greenback 3. The Senate will be about a tie. The country will get a surfeit of republican rule Lr iht next four years. Things Not as They Used to Was, «Xl> NEVER WERE WIIIT THEY Mlltt l.l* HAVE BEEN. Can’t We Have aClniiiifc far the Itetter in Our Mail facilities l $329 Garfield is elected and all the affairs and enterprises of the government seems to he moving on smoothly and prosperously with the exception of the mail contract from here to Chattanooga. The contractor, or government, or both have failed in (his undertaking which seems to have fallen into a verv dilapidated rendition, for the p.nt ten or twelve days. The first of July last they under took to bring us a daily mail, in a i Straight sack on a horse, exposed to the weather, which is unlaw fill, and not in a safe in inner, as every one knows, vet, still they brought it tin- 1 til the 9th of this iiwt., mnt at out this date the mail rider on this | art of the line rode off very unceremo niously on a line of his own we suppose, and has not been heard of since ; since which time our daily mail has dropped down to a kind of an accommodation semi-weekly mail, which would not he so bad af ter all, if we only knew what day or night of the week it was coming. Our readers at a distance will more fully appreciate the situation, if they are not moved to sympathy for us, when we state that this dil apidated accommodation line, lias broken into the edd and I mg es tablished customs of this place; customs and habits that hu v e exis ted so long, that the memory of the oldest citizen runneth not to the contrary : we ri far to the long es tabhshed custom ofour people, who from the oldest to the youngest have known for years the day of the week, and tin- hour of the day, that the mail would anive, and hy common consent on the day and hour of arrival a very large ornwd have always assembled at the post office in this place, to exchange friendly greetings and engage in so cial converse in discussing (lie top ics of the day, the condition of their crops, <fcc.; where wit and hu mor have been indulged in, for the enlertiiinn'ent of the crowd, and the : gr<-at delight of the small hoy ; where everybody seemed to have a good lime, and always received i their mail promptly by answering to their names when called ; but how changed mnv. The large crowd no longer assembles at the accustomed place to receive their mails. The wit and fun-loving hu morist imsdisappeari d. The friend Iv greeting and merry laugh is no 'miger seen and heard at our post office. Men are seen walking about our streets mournfully, and asking , ir. vain for the arrival of rur daily mail. Mr, Satterfield who has been willing to aid in opening the mails, as well as kind in carrying a large amount of mail to the very doors ol his neighbor , now returns home disappointed. How long this thing , is to last we are unable to say. We shall mail the Third Assis tant P. if., m Washington, 1). a copy of lhis weeks paper, and hope he will make some i.ew arrange ment hy which we may lie- able to receive our mails again. —— - We see it stated in a number of our exchanges, that Dr. Felton will contest the election in this district. The election was quiet, and as fair as any election ever held in Georgia and the di cor was fairly beaten.! and lie knows it, and the result was no surprise to him. if so, why did he tell a friend i.i Dalton the Sat urday evening hi lore the election, that there was no power on earth that could prevent his defeat then, or words to that i tll-et. We ary not surprised, however; we stated to a friend before the election, that we were very anxious to see Dr Fel ton defeated hy a vi ry large major ity, and that if he was beaten bv a less m "joritv than 2.000 votes he would contest the election. Two years ago l)r. Felton sneered at the empty sleeve of Hon. George N. Lester, as true a man and as pure a patriot, as ever stained a Guttl« field with his blood, and then misrepresented him from pverv stump in the Seventh Congression al district, we were fully convinced then, that there was n< thing, that his love of office and money, would not cause him to do, and our late experience, has not raised him any in our estimation. If to* takes something that don’t belong to him, and appeals to a Radical Congress to help him do it—we shall not be at all surprised - Hawkins. Republican, is elected G'-vernor of Tennessee.
