There is nothing brilliant about Clements (as is the c»se with Speer) 1 —he is inodent, mild, and »low— yet he hua alwa)* displayed remark ; able solidity of character and the i possession of starling qualities of head and heart. 1 have known j him in the House and Senate for a j number of years, end fully appreci- , j a ted his fine character; still hi* | election was a great surprise to me. | He is a well read lawyer, a mail of j good cense and easy, retiring man- j ners, and although only thirty-fuur years old, has the dignity und prud ence of a man of fifty.
