Locate have teen rather source for several weeks. Read new legal advertisements in this issue of our paper. The roads have been a dreadful j condition for several days. Mr. Warthen seems to have all j he can attend to at his gin. See notice of “Corn Wanted,” j also “Public School Notice.” Center <t Mize’s shops, seems to be one of the liveliest places in | town. A large lot of cotton left this j place on last Tuesday for Rome and j Dalton. There was a considerable crowd j in town on last Tuesday sale day. ; There was some property sold. Mr. Virgil Russell w« are glad to j state, is thought to be impmvuig j some. We hope to see him again | soon. There has been a great many | hogs marketed, since the last cold epetl set in. I rion seems to ha the ; popular rourket, 1 There will tie one more issue of the Messenger, before holidays.—* ; Candidates who desire an an nouncement had better remember j this. We are requested to slat'- that there will he pleaching at the Bnp list church on Saturday before tae third Sunday in this month, by Rev. E. Able. Was married at the residence of the bride’s mother, on the night of ■ 2nd inst., by Rev. Dr. D. C. Fariss, Mr. R. F. Mize to Miss Fannie 1 Powell. We tender the newly mai- j ried couple our best wishes for their | future happiness and prosperity. One thing all hnve to hnvo is something to eat, and therefore it is j a question of interest to all, to know where they can make good pur- i chases. We know of a place, we will tell you, it is at Mr. L. Paynes’, Chattanooga, Tennessee. Call and see him. Capt. Joel Wilbers announces liimrelf a candidate for Sheriff. As j you all know, he is a tried and true j man. Elect him and should his duty call him into danger, he will not flinch. Put a warrant in his hand, and if an offender can be got lie’ll get him. There is a disease prevalent among the cattle of this county, something simular to blind-stag gers. We have heard of several who have lost their cows from the effects of it. There is a difference, of opinion as to the cause of the disease. Sume think it is a mould in the roughness they caused by so much wet weather. Mr. John Morgan on returning home from town last Saturday night, rode under a shed where there was a wagon, for some pur pose, when his mule undertook to jump over the tongue of the wagon, and in doing so caught Mr. Morgan between the saddle and a log just below the roof of the shed, injuring him considerably. It is thought some of his ribs were tore lose. He is not we think fatally injured ; but very severely hurt. At. last ac counts he was resting easy. A Letter from Catoosa. December Ist, 18S0. Dear Messenger: The excitement incident to the congressional election has subsided. I believe, and it is so long until the county elections take place, that the people have once more settled down, and become interested in farming operations. A great change has taken place in the ndnris of far mers in the last twelve months Many circumstances have tended to induce this change. Heretofore, to raise wheat, corn, oats, clover and stock has been the rule; hut the Cincinnati Southern Railway has put the North West iri conipe i titionwith us, and has consequent ly so reduced the prices of grain, that the old plan of farming yields no profit, and the hogs and cattle have become diseased, which adds somewhat to the prevalent discour agements. But in bright contrast ! with the above gloomy outlook, we | have had one of the most flattering cotton crops imaginable. Those who raised cotton this year in Ca toosa have been completely success ful. Many have gathered a hale and upwards to the acre and dili gent inquiry fails to 11ml a single man who has planted cotton at all, who did not raise at least one half \ a bale per acre, and a careful esti- j mate, made by those who ginned | the cotton furtheremore shows that the average product is fully three j fourths of a hale per acre. This is j encouraging. It is true we have \ land here, that, is not adapted to cotton, but it is cleariy demonstrat ed within the last three years, that we are in the cotton belt, whenever proper judgment has been exercis ed in the selection of land upon which to plant it. Farmers evident ly realize that a crisis is upon them, and that the old rut in which they hrve been traveling must he aban doned. All are talking of planting cotton, (except those who have threshing machines) and the pros pects are that there will be a very large crop of cotton planted here next year. A very unfortunate accident oc curred aboutfour miles from Grays* ville a few days ago. Two hoys aged respectfully 14 and 10, the sons of a poor widow, were playing with a pistol, when it was acciden tally discharged the hall entering the shoulder of the younger hoy wounding him, it is thought, mor tally. PoIK On., > Ark., Nov. 28th, 1880. j Mr. Editor: Dear Sir —I again seat myself to let you ami your readers know l am still alive. Since my last writing we Imve ; had Borne very disagreeable weath er. We had snow the 17th inst.. shoe mouth deep, and since then I some very cold weather one man was found frozen to death. Farmers are very much behind ! j gathering their crops, a great deal j jof cotton yet in the field. Tliere is a great demand for hands to pick | ! cotton, at one dollar per hundred, and some are off ering half for gall)- ; ering. This is a good country for a man with energy and enterprise. 'I lie land produces well, making from i 30 to 60 bushels ol corn, and from i three-lourths to one hale oi cotton to the acre. Cotton is selling here at present at from 10 to 11 cents ; corn 30 to ! 60 ets per bushels ; pork from 3 to ! 4 cents per pound. This is a great hog country, nil that is required is to mark and keep them gentle, they will get fat on the must. And then tliere is plenty of game in the mountains around Russel ville, and ducks in the creeks and lakes for those that like to hunt. There were three hears in killed Yell county in time of the snow. Tliere is a great deal of talk of a new railroad here now to run from ! Arkadelphia via Hot Springs, Dar danelle and Russelville to Harrison in the northern part of the State, if ii is Imilt it will run through the beautiful valley of the Petitgean where there is a large number of Georgians they all have good health and are doing well. 1 am still well pleased with my move to this country, all I regret is that. 1 didn’t come sooner. I am going to move in the Spring twenty miles west of Dardanelle, in Yell county. I have received the Messenger, and was as glad to get it as if I had met a dozen of my Georgia friends I also rec -ived a hack number from a friend containing the account of the election oi the Hon.
