established in 1874, is the oldest in
their line in the United States, and
is widely known for square dealing.
Their Almanac and Rural Register
and Catalogue is an improvement
; upon former editions; their motto
seeming atways to be forward. It
! is illustrated with cuts of their farm
buildings and the more important
vegetables. It contains valuable
tables and instructions to market
gardners and amateurs. It is mail
ed postpaid to all who apply for it.
In the Upper Cove, on Sunday,
February 6th, Wm. Kilgore lost
bis house, smoke house and contents
and stables by fire. The fire origi
nated from a spark from the chim
ney catching on the roof. As it
was very windy, it took the fire but
a short time to do the work of de
struction. He lias met with a great
misfortune and we are sorry to have
it to record.
Otk the following day, the 7th,
on John Morgan’s place in the Town
District, Bud Kinnaman’s house
caught fire in one of the rooms
near the mantel. The flames broke
through the roof, but were exlin
i guished.
WALKER COUNTY.
Broomtown. Nothing special
for your columns this week. Rain,
mud and cold, bad on furmerp and
wagoners. Fretful creatures tve are
never content. But if we don’t
have pretty weather soon I don’t
think some of our farmeas will get
their cotton out in time for the
next crop.
Prof. Edwards’ school is increas

rison, Rev. T. C. Tucker officiating
In relation to the question about
the calf in the court house I don’t j
know who it was but guess it was :
some of our county otlicers. I saw j
Wm. Strange, ex-deputy U. S. Mar- '
shal pass through with a calf on his
mule. I supposed it was under ar
rest. It might have been the dep
uty Marshal that put the calf in
the court house to await trial; ho is
a terror to transgressors of the law.
Farmers are very much behind
with their work on account of had j
weather. Everybody is talking i
about planting cotton in this part j
of the cove.
Wheat is looking very well, we
look for a good crop this year.

Duck Creek.— The good people
in Wilson’s District are alert, and j
the sale of liquor will be strongly j
opposed. We fear the effect of it j
will be disastrous to good morals, j
to the peace and harmony that has
hitherto reigned in our midst; to
some extent the financial prosper- j
ity of the community, and last but I
not least we fear that many very j
many, both of the present genera- !
i tion and ol those yet to come, may
have their eternal welfare blasted
! By its poisonous influence.
While we feel that a very large
majority of our citizens are opposed
to the sale of spirituous liqurs in
our midst, we must remember that
some of the most fearful defeats in
time of war have been when the
most glorious victory was expected
Then let every ono who is a friend
to good society, and is is in favor
of cultivating the liner senses of
man go out, to the election and nip
the thing in Iho bud.
Mr. J. M. Clarksor. has taken nine
loads of potatoes to Rome, and will
start again soon.
A great many more of our citizens
wantjto go to Rome with cotton
and potatoes —their mules are not
as large us Mr. Clarkson’s.
We understand that Mr. Joshua
D, McConuel is going to start a
s ten in saw mill in the neighborhood
of Mr. A. J. Price’s. All we have
' to say let ’er roil.
The health of our community is
verv good at present, yet a good
physician could do a good business
here, Roscius.
Rock Spring. —The wind has
been blowing at a fearful rate for
tho last few days. Prospect for
better weather.
Politics is about played out.
We hope our commissioners will
take notico of the bad roads and
give us good roads next year.
J. M. Wellborn on the s ; ck list
this week.
Health of our community only
tolerable good.
A little snow on the wing a day
or two ago.
Give us some more Jaw for us
little one-horse farmers; and some
law for good postmasters to abide
by.
Let ns hear from our correspon
dent at Cedar Grove. His dots are
worth reading. Humble.
Frick’s Gap.—Everything lively
here now.
A gentleman rode to mv house
the other day, hitched to the gate
post. His mule tore down the post
and tramped up a batch of mud.
His paddle was covered with sheep
sk : n, wool side up to the rain. He
had to ride off on it for his pay.
Our new doctor, J. B. Shaw, has
just landed home from the lectures
at Nashville, and is now equipped
for the field ns practitioner, It is
generally thought that he will be
the right man in the right place.
R<*v. Wm. Shaw is some better,
though his 59 years are not much
in his favor, with his impediment;
but he can rejoice and be glad that
he has two doctors in his family.
One a graduate of the medical
schools, the other of nature’s mak
ing, being the seventh son. •
Our cotton men are wide awake.
Messrs. N. B. and A. S. Fricks have
ginned 283 hales. A. S. Fricks,
our enterprising merchant, has
bought 200 of them. All O. K.
Marion Singleterry was married
to Miss Sallie Morrison last Thurs
day night. Everybody said it
would be a match three years ago.

Crawfish Spring.— Rev. Mr.
Hughs came promptly to his ap
pointment Sunday notwitstanding
it was very cold and snowing; but
the people in the community
thought it was too cold for preach
ing and did not turn out.
Mr. Lee and Gordon Lee have
been buying cattle very extensively
this winter. Gordon returned from
Murray county last Tuesday where j
he purchased sixty two head.
J. T- Kirkpatrick Esq., sat on j
his first Case hero last Saturday. If
ajstranger had come in and seen him
dispose of business, he would have
concluded that he was an expert in
the office.
Miss Bowers of Ringgold came j
home with Miss Mollie Lee last
Friday evening, and stayd until Sun !
day morning. All who heard her, !
were charmed with her eloquence I
in reading.
Miss Carrie Wisdom of Chatta
nooga is visiting Miss Sallie Lee
this week.
The new school house near Mr.
Thos, Ahercrumbie’s is about com- i
plete. Miss Sueun Shields will be
gin a school there soon. A new |
school house has just been comple
ted near J. B. Henderson's. They
are going to get a teacher from Ring
gold.
Mrs Matilda Scott has been quite
sick for several days. Mrs. Sallie !
Gordon has also been very
sick for several months. We are
glad to learn that the old ladits are j
improving. Earnest.
