On the day following, after services
conducted by Dr. D. C. Fariss, in the

Four miles above town near tin*
Chattanooga roml, one night hist
week about bed time Mrs. D Har
ris, who was out on the porch, star
tled her husband lay the exclama
tion t.h/it there was a black man in
the yard. Harris‘ran out to the
potato bank, about 40 yards off
thinking ho was there. Mrs. Har
ris told Ilarve Tipton, who was lie- f
ing with them, that he was at the
smoke house. Tipton picked up
the tongs'aiidjmnde'fur thejsceuo of
action. As'he got'there ho heard ]
Harris’ cheery', ‘‘Here lie is,” And !
sure enough lie was there. Two
against one, he knew it would not ;
do to run. Harris asked him what
he was doingUhere at that time of j
night, and told him that if lie was
that near starved, if he won! I tell
him his name, he would give him
a piece of meat. But the black
man was determined not to com- j
mit bimself. The liss he had to j
say the angrier they got. But all
their urging,ex postulal ing,bemoan
ing and demanding did no good, 1
At last Tipton told him flatly that
if lie did not teli them his name, he
would knock his el —d head off
At this point Harris prudently in
terfered and told him not to hit
him; that they ought to examine
first and see whether lie had been
in the smoke house. ‘ No” said
Tipton, drawing back to strike, ”1
have talked to him long enough
and if he don't answer trie, beshnll j
have it—Once more, arid for the i
last time, what's your name,” Re
ceiving no answer, down came the j
murder .us blow, crushing in bis ;
head. The deed was done. The 1
guilty parties have not been arrest- j
ed, but when ever they are, they j
are willing to acknowledge how j
badly they were sold. Instead of j
a living man, it was a fixed up one, j
made with the help of some oid !
c’othes and a hat. The only par
ties that were in any real danger j
were the girls, who came near dy- j
ng of laughter as the terrible quar
rel went on.
The race for Sheriff was a walk j
j over. But the race on Thursday !
the 24th inst., between McClatchv j
and Charley Smith was r.o f . j
; Charley, for whom Mae had three
| warrants for larceny and the like,
j was proposing to homestead and
had come in to make his affidavit,
| hut hud picxed his time so that he
; would not have to interview the j
Sheriff. But word was sent to the
i Sheriff that his game was lu re. He i
i got hack it time to mount for the j
race, in company with John Sham- [
blin. just as Smith was leaving on !
horseback. Smith was at the bridge :
over the mil! race when he found
that be was pursued. To gain on
j him the Sheriff took the cut off by
j the Baptist church. Smith, seeing
that he, was going to he headed off,
abandonded ids horse at George
Ciardy’s, and took up the lane that,
runs over the bill. The cavalry
came on at full tilt after the in
fantry. The infantry was striking
for the woods west of town. Ai
one time Smith was out of sight,
and could have gotten invwy if he
had played the drop game. Bui
the noise he made in the leaves
guided his pursuers. When Mac
got it sip ht of him he told the big
j gest sort of a story. He said;
I "Stop there, confound you, or I’ll
| shoot!” He had nothing to shoot
| with. Smith, who was run clown,
with one hand on his head and the
! other stretched out, to show that
lie was not going to fight surren
: dered. Ho is now at the brick
hotel.
There were two true bills found
against ft. A. Ivey of Pond Spring
at last Court; one for giving liquor
to a minor and the other for misde
meanor. Instead of hiding out when

McClatchy’s hands he came in and
( gave bond. Joseph Carson, T. A.
! Eubanks, and Jas. B. Bonds are his
bondsmen.
Jack Herring on the Jack Law

We have seen two or three dil
ferent systems for the cultivation
of cotton, and all probably from
men who are successful cotton raid
evs, published in the Messenger,
which we hear n great many say
they cannot understand. That is
why men to accomplish the same
purpose should so greatly differ
from each other in their plans
After a careful consideration of
the arguments of the theoretical
cotl n raisers, we are forced to this
conclusion. That the preparation
of land for cotton corn or anything
eNe (I pends to a considerable ex
tent upon the quality and condi
tion of the land; and from my lim
ited experience, any preparation
will do so it pu s the ground
in good mellow condition, with
enough of good f rtilizer on the
right quality of land, planted early
enough to hive time to mature,
and then cu!t : vatd lightly yet care
fully and often. I have never seen
it fail to produce an abundant crop
the season being favorable.

That law won’t take in this courtrj.
