Tin .I' i r n!:ig of the Is art House.
Friday morning, sb mt 2 a. in.
the Court House at LaFayette nus
discovered t-i con fir A general
marm w«s s-uod'd, bite by the
tiit.ie the citizens begun »c arrive on
the square, tLc fl .n.cs we-e beyond
eonirol.
I’ncCiolad started about 'he
north o’.-t stairway in ti e Court ;
room, which occupied tho whole of I
the lower lloor. From that point j
it had swept past the si ;or.d floor
and through the ceiling overhead, .
and was now bursting through the i
roof. The stairway fell in a few 1
minutes, and the lower story was
enveloped in flames, all access to
tho building from below being cut
off.
With a suitable ladder the Ordi
nary’s office, which was on the aec
ond floor, could have been reached
from the outside, and tbs records
saved. But there was not a loug
ladder in town. - i
The attention of the citirjtis was
now given to preygsttise sprand of
the tne night wes !
edit Os the storts, that of J. E. ,
Bluiford’s was iu a blistering ooa
dition;from the heat, but the cur- j
rent created by the fire aet over I
Hill & Patton's and supplied them
very lreely with burning .cinders.
But a liberal supply of water iu the j
hands of brave volunteers, who had
mounted the reof, made the dan
ger no longer critical. As the biirn
ing'progressed, the current chang
ed, and the buildings in the south
west pare of the town were pretty
well sprinkled with the rain of fire,
which fell harmless in the presence
of those in guard.
The loose fodder in the gable end
of the stahlejof F YV Copeland was
tired, but fortunately it was dieecv
ered and thrown out, before any
harm was done. In the yard of
Rev. J. L. King tho leaves and
dead grass were ignited.
The danger to which the town
was exposed wss but of short du
ration. About an hour and a Half
after the cry of fire, the west wall
fell in, slid about three quarters of
an hour later, the east one jiepl it
company. The twoend walls were
a few hours later, as a matter of
precaution, thrown down,jw that
by twelve o’clock all that was left
of the venerable pile was levehd
to the ground.
THE ORIGIN OF THE FIRE.
is unknown. About the stairway
were piled wood and chips. Jus
tice Court had been held in the j
Court room Thursday until late in j
the afternoon. The careless act of
some one could have supplied the
spark that smoldered there, ready
in the dead hours of the eight to
do its destructive work.
The bucket of the public well
was cut off' and carried a short dis
tance down the side street by Hill
atd Patton’s aud dropped by the
fence. But as there was a colored
frolic in town that night, and as
the same thing had been done acv
erai times before, it is not conclu
sive that it b:<d any connection
with iho burning of the Court
House. Far better for the Cre to
have been Accidental, than to be
lieve that arty one was base enough
to use the torch of the incendiary.
