- To The Messenger
St. Valentine’s Day, Mr’Editor*
was an epoch in my history. ' For
years past that day has come and
gone without leaying me a memen
to of its presence, at least, for the
Jaal thirty years. But on tbe last
St. Valentine’s day, my son, who
went early to the post office, came
back laughing and said to me, ‘Pa
here is a valentine for you.’ Hav
ing been an invalid, is you Enow
for more than three months, I was
Still in bed when be handed ms the
pacKage. With much surprise I
opened tha envelope, and found
two phpers enclosed. One was thd
caricature of a preacher, in the pul
pit, with s 'little body’ dressed in
green, a’large’bead and ’a 'wid*
open mouth’ vociferating apparent
iy at the top of his voice Above h s
head was a large Candle-Extin
guisher, on which, was printed
these words, viz: ‘Patent Sniffer
fbr lohg winded preachers.’ Bslcw
the pu'pit were these lines, viz;
1 A Clerical Wind-bag.

Would be t'ue very i(i‘og for you; '

talk,
As nothing e'se could do.
Now Mr Editor, M I always en
joy a joke or piece of pleasantry, I
enjoyed this one very much. Par
ticnk.-ly great was the enjoyment
when I opened the paper enclosed.
What do you think it was? Well
aa yeu cannot guess in a week 1
will tell you. It was a “Fiva Dol
lar Bi". Yon and your reader*
mayjWdge thatT enjoyed my valeq
tine hugely. 'lt was a kind and
delicate way of making one of God*
servants a presect,and I have writ
ten this article, in order to thank
the kind donor, for b : s opportune
gift.
All I could do in return for the
generosity sho.-n, was to pi ay that
the blessing prom ed in the words
of Cb-iit, might b- hie, 'He that

In 1863, Mr. Willson, now Law
rence, Mass., was in the Commis
sary Department in Washington.
Somehow or other, he was taken
with a violent soreness of the
throat. Several Army Surgeons
examined h : s throat and decided
that it was hopeless. After they
bad gived him up, he tried Perry
Davise’s Pain Killer. The next
day the scales began to come off
of his throat, and in two or three
days he was well.
