The firm ofSteiton & Howard
of Chattanooga is composed of two
of the cleverest men ofouracquain
tance. They say tie Messenger
is tbe best advertising medium “we
have eyer tried,” and they hsyo
advertised quite extensively. This
shows that our farmers and mer
chants knew where to find bargins
and good articles. They keep all
kinds of Harness, Saddles and Sad

Eli Patton, a prominent farmer
of Transylvania County, NC, end
an uncle of James E Patton, ol La-
Fayette, was fatally injured the
12th inst. He had gone to his lot
to water his Jersey bull, when it
made at him and gored him through
the body. In the struggle which
followed Mr. Patton was thrown
down. When his wife and little
boy heard the came out,
they found him under the bull’s
feet, but partially controling the
mad animal, by having hold of the
ring in his nose. By his direction
his wife assisted him m bolding
him while bis litte boy tried to cut
the brutes throat. Some hands
then came up and rescued Mr- Pat

Mark L Whitman, who now rep
resents R. S. Peale & Co., publishers
of Peal’s Popular Educator,
been in town for some days selling
this popular work. We feel that
we oannot say too much in favor of
this popular book. Everybody
should have it because it will be
found indispensable. The educator
has more information in propor
tion to the space used than it
would seem possible for a hook to
contain. It is a compendium of
reference on almost all subjects ar.d
were the different volumes they
would cost six or eight times the
price of the one handsome volume
which contains the whole. The
book has met with immense success
since its recent introduction to the
public, Mr. Whitman has sold
quite a number of these valuable
books in town and we commend
both the book and its salesman to
the eptire public-
