Editor Messenger:
Tho weather fitmi to be rather
Orfavorable for farming purposes.
There are quite a number of far
meri In the Cove, who have not
planted their corn, or at least a
grater portion of the land ia wait
ing suitable weather tor putting in
the crop.
A C Glenn, James E Camp and
D T llall, who went out west a few
day* ago, that they might take a
peep at thepiomised land.rcturned
on the Ist of May, looking a* well
a* might be expected under the
circumstances. Jim says if there
is aoy noosing to that country, it
will bare to be done by some body
that likes it better that be does.
His no 1 , ion now, is to remain a
citison of Walker county Are
says if be should become insane,
he might in that condition be
caught west ol the Mississippi river,
but so long as he retains his right
mind, he too will stick to Georgia
measure tape &c., and enjoy him
self on a half loaf—rather than
try to make a fortune in a coun
try when patent medicines make
up the greater portion of the diet.
Duvo gays if the tail whiol)
he was holding to, had not
give way, ho might have remained
longir, Now as to going back, he
thinks it will have to be on some
very important business, and not
then unless uncle Joe, should take
considerable rise with the disposi
tion of bis grteb. So upon the
whole 1 think the boysaro ail per
fectly willing to remain here,where
strengthening medicines can be
had without so much smuggling.
i hear consideratdo complai't
about hogs dying with cholera.
1* there no remedy tor this fatal
disease? If so, the knowing one
will oofer a fayor by letting it be
known through tho coluinm of tho
Mssskmukr.
Your ltugle Cliff correspondent
wants every body’s version, mine
too, in regard to the county roads.
Hero is mine: I know the roads
are in bad condition and will re
main so, unless there is more work
do.io, and not so much talk. I
don't think all the law makers in
the Stato, could pass a law that
would pi wise everybody, therefore
instead of sitting around places of
resod and passing so many chimney
corner laws, all hands go to work
in earnest and make good loads,
This can all be done while wa are
talking tbout the inconsistency of
the present system.
A young tuan who look a
young lady to church at Bethel,
not more than two Sundays ago,
on Lis return homo with her, was
interrupted by a married lady, she
wa’king in between him and his
girl twice, causing him to change
position. That did not suit the
ideas which his boos had taught him
about Etiquette. Ho is now medi
tating over the transaction, and may
finally conclude to try the same
thing over, but thinks be will go
to Utah, where molestations of
that kind never happen.
J C Hall's pond was surroun
ded Saturday evening last, by ex
perienced frog shooters and several
of the cherogs had to bid adieu to
this earthly abode. They were
nieely dressed, then prepared for
the table, when the Prof., Ave and
Bud did them justice. Ave ears
they make him fall like leaping,
but notin t c direction of the Indian
Territory.
Patrick Pope, who lives on C W
Conley's farm, says: Irish pota
toes are now no rarity to him, as
he has been supplied since tbe Ist
cf Fabruary with this years growth
from' bis cellar, where he put his
latoee away lost fall for the wiuter.
They sprouted and new ones grew
as large as hen egga, which were
very delicious, so Patrick says.
The fishing business is in full
blast; red worms are eagerly sought
after; and now and then a minnow
caught, which amply pays tbe
fisherman for his days work.
There lias been tome gicki ess in
tlie neighborhood, Mrs. Sam
Buchanan is very low with fever.
N r» Smith's wife and daughter,
who have been very low with fever,
are now convalescent.

Panhandle Holes.
Editor M etsenger.
It continues to rain so much
that we are afraid tbe farmers of
the Panhandle will have to build a
poor-bouse
Our town of Divine, where green
corn fields once stood, now con
tains two storsi, one blacksmith
shop, one old bachelor, and some
very namely young men.
Mr. Daniel 11. Bryan, of Chata
ta, Bradley county, Tenn., visited
relatives in tbs Panhandle during
tbe later part of tbe week.
Messrs. G. U. Miller and Jacob
Flagle, of Norwich, Ohio, are visit
ing the families of Messrs. I-ogan
and Flagie on Mission Itidge.
We were truly glad to know of
the call for the citizona of Walker
county to nae»t and discuss the
subject of having a fair ground.
Time will provo I's beuefit to the
county. Let us have it.
We learn that strawberry pick
ers are scarce, although good wages
ore being paid. We learn that it
will take one hundred hands to
gather the crop of Logan nnd Mil
ler. There ia certainly a ehance
for everybody, his wife and chil
dren, to get money to boy their
winter shoes.
The picnic, which I mentioned
in a previous article, was at Cloud
Bpring. It was crowned with suc
cess. Several persons were present
from Chattanooga. The exercises
consisted implaying, eating, s}>ark
ing, and tearing up jaok in general.
Your coireapondent at Eagle
Cliff asked my opinion on public
roads. I will give it for what it is
worth. We need the kind of roads
ho mentioned through the county,
and if we don’t have them pretty
soon in this part of the county wo
are going to have our traveling to
do in bs’loons. But how aro we to
&et them? Tbe present law will
not make them nor give satisfac
tion. For tho people to work ten
or fifteen days each year will not
make them. Then let tliero boa
tax assessed, and it the people have
it to pay let them pay it us aonn as
posoiule and be done with it. It
seems that would be as easy as to
pay a little each yonr. and let some
one take the contract to make the
roads, and then it will not take
four men to tell the fifth one where
to put a load of rock. But this tax
is like guano. Wo want it on a
credit il we can get it, but we must
manage to have all the work done
at onoe, so that what work ia done
one year will uot wash away by the
noxt year. Titos.
Divine, Tonn., May 6th, 'Bl.
Roc* Spkino, May 4th.
John Limber asks lor our views
upon the proposed fair and other
subjects. Do ycu ask if we are rea
dy and able to build up a county
fair ? My answer is—we are. I
point with delight to our wheat,
corn and cloyer farms, splendid
chuirhrs and good sooiety, good
water, immense forests and alluvial
■oil. With proper and judioious
management »uooe»* i» ours. There
fore fellow-citiaens arouse from
your lethargy .bring out thoac suets
of silyerand gold, that you have
had hid so long, and say by your
actions that we must encourage la
bor ; we must encourago our farm
ers to raise more grass and clover,
more stock and wf a finer grade ;
that we must build up a county
fnir and invite capital in our midst.
And just ut sure as the auu contin
ues to shine and casts its glittering
rays through the canopy of Hen Tern
just so sure w 11 Walker immerge
from her long thraldom, and begin
to revive nnd develop her hidden
resources of wealth and power that
hate beon laying dormant so long.
It would not only encourage every
profession and every branch of la
bor, blit factories would 1 be erected,
and ere long the train would be
galloping through our county.
Success to tbe enterprise.
Wheat, osts, clover, spring thick
ens, politics and-A. J. Hicks’ big
boy are getting along very well.
I am in favor of free whisker,
freetobaouo, ptentv of corn and
go-oil old rye and peach brandy.
Whiskey is a uecesaary evil; we can
not get along well with it, nor can
we get along without it.
Now Joho Limber, I don’t want
you to have' anything more to do
with that wild man. Hut lay aside
your grip rack, pistols and chains
and come out flat-footed and tell
us wbat you think about free whis
key, free tobacco (.for I know you
love both) and 1 will have you
* ifppoiuted overseer next year.
