On the first page will be found
tbe text of the new school law pass
ed by tbe last Legislature. Its host
feature is that it enables tbe child of
the poor man, to go to school for
three montbs in each yeai. As it
is now, nfier attending the public
school for six weeks or two months
be is called to the field, Under the
new law, any community, even
where there is no private school,
can secure b teacher and have a
school run for sii weexs in the
winter or spring and six weeas in
the cummer, and draw their pro
rata of the public money. Tue law
puts the question of when and how
long .he school shall run (provided
they do not exceed three months)
entirely in tho hands of the com
munity. It is a matter of vital in
terest to all, and we should be glad
to have it discussed through the
Messenger.
Editor Messenger:
My eon, DeWitt. several weeks
ago had the misfortune to stick the
blads of a Knife into his eye. The
wound was in tho white of the eye,
and also reached the colored por
tion, Careful treatment was given
but the injury resulted in the loss
of sight in the wounded member.
After some weeks sympathetic in
flamation in the well eye set up,
and Dr. J Hill Hammond was
called in. He placed my son un
der his treatment, but told me
that the c*se was a serious one,
and that if it would be any sid.is
faction to me he would be gla ji to
have me get tbe advice of any oth
er physic a■. Knowing the repu
tation of Dr. Kendrick as an ocu
list, I took my son there. When
be learned what Dr. Hammond’s
treatment was, he said it was one
of the best known to the profession
and advised its continuanee. This
1 am doing, and though the case is
a critical one I shall hope for the
best. 3 L. Neal.
