property has been donated to us,
and a considerable amount pur
chased by us at very low prices;
the two approximating in value to
near 8100,000. Thousands of the
people of Mexico, now look to Bap

history of Mission efforts has there
been such a welcome in any Nation

tutions in the Slate, whoso able
President, Rev. A. J. Battle, is
with us, is doing a noble work,
whose intluence is felt not only ' in
Georgia, but in other Slates. Slior

Gainesville Female College, are
Splendid institutions, uqder Baptist

age. The Southern Baptist Theo
logical Seminary at Louisville, Kv.,
is doiug a great work iu preparing
the rising ministry, for their life
work, ami we heartily recommend
it to the patronage of our people.

T. 0. TUCKER, Chin.
After discussion of this report by
Brethren B. F. Bartles, W. C. Mc-
Call and W. T. Russell, it was
adopted.
The Committee on Temperanoe,
submitted the following report:
Your Committee on Temperance
beg leave to make the following re
port: Ten years ago, it is said that
there were not more than ten thou
sand temperance workers in the
State of Georgia. Since then the
ten thousand have been doubling,
until now near three-fourths of the
population of our State are enlisted
in the grand cause. A largo num
ber of our counties and communi
ties have riil themselves of the traf
fic, while a great many others have
largely abated the evil. The nu
merous petitions to the General As
sembly, praying for a prohibition
law, indicates tho sentiment of the
people. Many Christians who once
opposed, now warmly advocate the
temperance reform. These indica
tions show a gratifying advance.
We should he thankful to God, and
to the noble men and women who
have prayed, worked and sacrificed
to accomplish this. Could we bring
into your presence every father,
mother, wife and sister, w hose tears
have been stayed; whose hearts
have been comforted; whose homes
have been brightened and blessed
all would join in the exclamation:
“Thank God for such glorious re
sults!” Much remains to he done.
Wo need the moral and.active sup
port of all good men and women.
We believe that, all ministers of Je
sus should preach temperance ser
mons; that all churches should
kindly, but firmly, discipline mem
bers who sell or drink ardent spir
its as a beverage, and that all
Christians should practice total ab
stinence as the best means of saving
others. We entreat all to work
with a zeal in this cause, encourag
ed by the grand success of the last
few years, until by the power of
public sentiment and social influ
ence, we make the liquor traffic a
thing to be condemned, shunned,
abhorred, loathed; until we rescue
the young men and women, from
the danger of a fate more to he
dreaded than the grave, for the
grave is a sweet refuge, in compar
ison with the drunkard’s doom, or
the fate of a drunkard's wife.
Respectfully submitted.
E. A. McHAN, dim.
The Committee on Religious Lit
erature, submitted the following
report:
We recommend first, a careful
study of the Word of God, for in
the word we find the wav of eternal
life—Jesus our great High Priest.
Second, the American Baptist Re
flector and the Christian Index; al-1
so the Baptist and Kind Words j
as sound instructors. We would i
urge upon the brethren to take one
of the above named papers.
