One of the most delightful so
cial events of the year was tha
“Pound Party” at Mr. J K Shu
ford’g last Monday evening, about
twenty coup *s left town at 6 am.,
in wagons, hacks and buggies and
drove out to his pretty place *.o
enjoy the eveu'ng. Mr. Sbui'ord s
orchard affords some delicious fiuit
which all enjoyed in the earlier
part of the evening. The lawn aid
the moonlight w«re as inseparable
astbev were enjoyable. At 10:30
tha gay company repaired to the
dining room where.a tempting and
boon lful f oSt was spread. Pleas
ant email talk, gaa.es and music,
interested thb guests until, when
at a lare hour, they retired by the
light of the moon.
Both the exhibitions «n last
Friday night were well attended.
The entertainment at thn'tooga
was favored with a remarkably
large crowd Tue se ections were
very good indeed and th •* pleasant
occasion was rendered more appre
ciable by the excel ent mu io ren
Cored t>v the Broom T itvn Bind.
Literary amu-eiuent a.d mu-dt
though did not entirely exclude
romance or se itim nt. Perhaps of
the most thri'liug features was the
news of a clat.deniton .marring*,
Melvin C Ini.man, one of Broom
Town’s most worth* young men,
was married to Mis* Minnie Can
non a most charming young lady.
Os course this is io linger new*,
aud the Me-sengkr only mention
it to offer its c mgratulatious ami
extend its hi artiest good wishes to
the young couple.
It was our pleasure on last Fri
day night to attend the exhibition
at Union Church, at the close of
Mr. Sc-ogin’s school. It was well
attended by a large—and with few
exceptions —very attentive audi
ence. The smaller children spoke
and recited their pieces very cred
itably. Several of the young gen*
tleman declaimed, each doing him
self honor. Among others who did
remarkably well, we would like to
compliment Oscar \yheeler. His
speech was very lengthy, but was
memorized to perfection, and bis
cool deliberate address won the ad
miratioD of all. And we can’t pass
without saying that the speeches of
Win. Renfro, Bennie Wheeler and
Allen Q uinn were very interesting
and entertaining. The essays of
the young ladies were all weil read
and the advice that some gave to
the old Batchelors and the boys
that drink was appropriate to this
day and time. The charades and
tableaus were well acted. The en
tire affair did credit to the mana
gers. E. A. M.
