The drouth that has just closed
has been one of: he most memorable
in the history of this section It
shortened the cotton crop and ruin
ed the late corn But its effect cn
wells and springs has not been ns
severe a# some that were of shorter
duration. This was owing to the
heavy rain fall during the Spring
and Summer.. The earth had tak
en up and stored away such a sup
ply of water that even the fiery
drouth did not entirely exhaust it.

under the impulse of the wind un.|
the twisting of the rope, slowly with
distorted faces and protruding
tongues they were carried round

would have driven miles to lm\e

The lynching party consisted of
about forty meu. Their rendezvous
was the abandoned iron works at
Cornwall. They reached the jail
after midnight. The Sheriff was
absent, and the keys were deman

her. The doomed man and w oman

erything was done so quietly that
no one in tow n with the exception
of the Sheriffs family and one liv

As the prisoners were being taken
to the fatal oak tree Mis. nines, a
lady living on the outskirts was

his life, but Jane was made of
sterner stuff and told him that if
they were going to bang them, let
them hang and be—to them. A

was adjusted That done, they
were swung off, an t death wa- left

Dr A W. T. CLKNDENEN,
who recently died in Bonham, Tex.,
wan for a number of vears a citizen
ofLaFayette. He was born in Ten

Bonham Aug. 1884.
At an early age he chose th»
practice of medicine for a vocation,
which difficult science he labored
with great energy to master, and
having qualified him-elf for his ar
duous profession, he entered at once
into a large an i lucrative practice.
The ineeSsant labor connected with
his loved profession was too severe
for his feeble constitution; his
health failed; he reluctantly gave
up the calling in which he had
1 gained an enviable leputslion, and
in order to entirely get free from the
practice, left bis naive place and
ctme to LaFayetta, about the year
1812. Here he engage iin fai ruing
and the mercantile business In
each ho evinced commendable ener
gy, and acquired success. The
Doctor left onr place in 1859,located
in Fannin County, Texas and re
main d there until his demise.
Early in life he made a profession
of religion end joined thcM -thodist
Church. Soon altar connecting
himself with the church, ho was li
censrl to pro,-.cl), and became an
acceptable local preacher; always
entertaining, a“ times his sermons
were of great power; in exhortation
very felieilious, and in fervency of
prayer rarely equalled, «nd never
surpassed. He seemed to take hold
of the promises of Cod with Jacob
like energy and like him wrestling
prevailed. The doctor maintained
his religious enthusiasm to the last,
died triumphantly, and lias, we
