A Nameless Crime Avenged by
Men Frantic tor the D'ooil
of the Fiend.
Florence, Ala., July 15.—Near
West Point, Turn., Tuesday as
ternnou Miss B«ue Williams, an
18-ytar-old young lady was found
brutally muYdered in the woods
near her home. This afternoon
at two o’clock Anthony Williams,
her murderer and assaulter was
captured near Prnittou, iu this
j county, and at 7 o’clock he ex
piated his crime in the streets of
West Point in the presence of ful
ly five hundred people. The
wildest excitement prevailed, and
tonight people are pouring into
West Point from every neighbor
ing town and villege. Williams
was riddled with bullets and
burned in the streets of West
Point, his body being reduced to
ashes. Before a shot was fired
he was knocked down by one of
the crowd and stamped to death.
Then the crowd fell back and
those who had pistols fired volley
after at him. The crowd then
gathered wood and building a
fire over over bite, watched the
ghastly scene until the murderer
was only ashes.
For two days and nights five
hundred men, armed and determ
ined, have scoured the country
for miles for the fiend. Several
times posses were within shoot
ing distance of him, but every
time he escaped. When he was
captured it was within sixteen
miles of the scene of his horrible
crime. A man named Clark, to
whom he applied for tobacco,sus
pected him and held him for the
crowd.
For hours after the dead and
horribly mutilated body of Miss
Williams was found there was no
clue to the perpetrator of the
deed. Finally suspicion fell up
on a negro boy, Anthony Wil
liams, alias Bull, and the suspi
cion later became a certainty. In
an incrediabiy short time the
whole country around West Point
was up in arms and searching for
the negro. He was traced to Iron
City, where it was learned that he
had traded the young 1 cdy’s belt
to a negro woman, at whose house
he had spent the night.
He was later seen at Pruitton,
and the mob there got within
shooting distance of him, and
several shots were tired. He es
caped and all trace of him was
lost until this afternoon, when a
party of the searchers came upon
him unexpectedly three miles
south of Pruitton. He had been
iu the woods without food for
more than two days and running
most of the time, so that he was
in no condition to offer resistance.
The crowd quickly decided to
take him back to the scene of his
brutal crime, tie him to the same
tree that he had tied his victim
to when he outraged her and
there give him a torturing heath.
The mob who meted out sum
mary justice to Anthony
was composed of the best and
most substantial men of that sec
tion and their action is applauded
by even the negroes.
The victim of Williams’ lust and
murderous frenzy was a very at
tractive girl and was shortly to
have been married to a young
i man in Nashville.
Her intended husband came
| down from Nashville today aud
was at W’est Point to meet the
crowd of avengers and assist them
in dealing ont vengence.
The crime for which Williams
was stamped, shot anil burned to
day was the most brutal ever com
mitted iu this section of the coun
try. The young ladv left her
home early Tuesday morning to
pick a few berries. When she
did not return at dinner time her
friends went iu search of her. tshe
was found 200 yards from her
home, dead and tied to a sapling
with a leather strap around her
neck. One of her eyes had been
gouged out and in her tightly
clutched hands were leaves and
grass. All around the ground
showed that a terrible struggle
had taken place between the un
fortunate girl and her assailant.
When the negro was captured his
face and arms were terribly

lio had met with much resistance
in accomplishing his foul design.
Tonight West Point is tilled
with excited men. From all the
country round about armed men
docked in, and now they are
(gradually returning to their
homes, well satis tied with their
work. The original intention of
the mob was to take Williams to
the scene of his crime and there
wreak vengeance, but the dis
tance was too great and the mob

Become Rich in a Day.
San Francisco, Cal., July 13.
A private letter from a miner who
has just returned from the Clon
dyke mines to Circle City gives
some new facts in regard to the
extraordinary Alaskan bonanza
gold held. The writer Says:
“Circle City is now deserted;
everybody is up at Cloudyke, or
preparing to go soon. Clondyke
River is over 200 miles up the
Yukon from here. It is the rich
est district the world has ever
known, and will produce millions
this year. I returned from Clou
dyke for grub, and start back
to-morrow. Flour at Clondyke
is worth SIOO per sack of 50
pounds, and everything else is in
proportion, and none to he bought.
Live dogs are worth from $2 to
$5 per pound; they are horses in
this country. Gravel is frozen 18
to 20 feet deep, to bed rock, but
we burn a shaft down and then
drift, using fire instead of powder.
The gravel runs in gold from $5
to $l5O per pan. A young fellow
on a claim above me panned out
$40,000 in two days. I was offer
ed $250,000 cash for my claim. I
still hold the ground, and will
either be a millionaire or a pau
per in the fall. Men can not be
hired for wages. Every newcomer
in camp is offered big wages, as
high as SSO a day, butseldom will
anyone work for another. The
only phantom that stands in our
way to the goal of a millionaire is
grub. 1 have provisions enough
to last me until next June, and I
am as well fixed as anv man in
the country. If boats do not get
up the river before July we will
be in hard times.”

Dastroying Cabbage Worms.
Editor of the Record: Iu look
ing oyer the Record I noticed an
item on the destrnctiou of the
cabbage worm. I am a girl,
raised on a farm, and I will give
my experience, which I think is
better than the salt cure. We
put out our cabbage; they were
growing nicely; the small leaves
were turning in, when the worm
appeared in plenty. I had never
beard of any cure and had no
faith in this One, but I took a
bucket, tilled it several times with
good wood ashes, went to each
little plant and threw in a small
handful, During the night there
was a very light shower, which
made a lye and completely burned
the worms up. I have never seen
one on them since ttiat summer.
The cabbage grew very rapidly,
and we had large and solid beads
for the experiment. I think if
this cure will benefit gardeners
and farmers they should know it.
