Next election Tuesday, Nov. >).
You must admit that it takes a
roal good county to have two fairs.
You have to pay tribute to Trans
Hebool district for pure progressive
ness.
Rome has captured the state reun
ion of Confederate veterans for
11)11.
Akerman is a good man, but he
is disputing the right-of way with the
Democratic steam roller.
There iB a great demand for Wal
ker county farms. People are not
alow to realize a good thing.
Tennessee is entitled to the sym
pathy of Georgians—their guber
natorial race is still undecided.
Is that a Democratic break-down
in Tennessee for which Bob Taylor is
fiddling and calling the figures?
Looks like the dog owners will
have to take the medicine the legis
lature prescribed and pay that dollar
dog tax.
One of the political wondera of the
age is the Colossus of Roosevelt.
And it is no wonder that it straddles
the tariff.
Old Walker is on the up-grade.
And the census figures will show our
progressive prosperity car is a good
hill climber.
Anyway, the weatherman did his
best to make amends for the rough
deal he gave the farmers in the
spring and summer.
Many of our citizens Lavs to spend
a year or so in granoletexas to real
ize that the honey-pond and fritter
tree can quickest be found here in
Walker.
Lest we forget—there's the bailiffs
election coming on. There's class
to this election, thinks the Griffin
News, for it says: “Bailiffs can
raise name b-ll in a community than
all the governors"
The sttiement is officially made
tnat the individual owning the great
est number of dogs in Walker coun
ty is a negro, who returned five dogs
for taxation. His dog tax is, there
fore, $5. His poll tax is sl, and his
property tax lbo, so yon can see how
the dog tax bits him.
•
Oue impatient La Fayette citizen
has joyfully calculated that there is
but one more dark-of- the moon to
live through until there will be
lights to guide his homeward foot
steps.
Dozens of Georgia counties com
peting for prizes at the state fair in
Macon this week. Walker is not
among the oumi>er, but we have the
eminently pleasing consciousness
that this county would have won
first prize had we entered the
li ts.
A Courageous Statesman
Wanted
(Macon Telegraph)
One of the greatest needs of this
country is a statesman with sufficient
courage to stand up in congress and
attack the gigantic pension swindle
Mr. Roosevelt is popularly supposed
to have courage to spare. Let him
prove it by denouncing this outrage
ous fraud which indirectly places an
unjust tax on every individual Am I
erieau. The republican party is the
chief sinner in this matter, but the
democratic party is equally cowardly
and more recreant to its plain duty,
as the party of opposition, to attack
the iofamy and demand reform.
Iu limeof profound civil peacj,
says a writer in the World’s Work 1
for October, "full half a ceutury af
ter its existence was lust threatened,
the United States government is lay-,
ing upon every man, woman and
child in the land a tax of $2 a year,
to pay military pensions. It is’
handing over to a particular class
(consisting of a million men and
women once for a short time direct- j
ly or indirectly connected with the
army) a sum which would in one 1
year pay the expenses of the entire]
military and naval establishments of
Japan for three years and a half;'
which, another year, would buy the
Argentine wheat crop and leave
enough money to pay, another year,
the bills of the German army—the
biggest iu the world; which, auotber
year, would pay the sum total of the
cost of the government of Bslgiu m
—the most patriarchal in the world."
It stands to reason that forty-five
years after Ihe war the greater part
of this huge sum goes to unworthy
persons. It has been shown again
and again that deserters, shirkers
aDd imposters of every description
are on the rolls, but nothing is done
Democrats and republicans alike are
afraid to move a single step toward
reform. The thing is a tyranny as
well as a fraud.
Corn Contest For Boys
The corn contest which have been
carried on in the many Btates have,
proven of great educational value to
the boys. The prizes offered have 1
added zest to the endeavor to maka
tne best showing and produce the
beat £orn, but the knowledge and
experience gained are of far greater!
importance than any prize. Last
year there was issued in Arkansas a
circular on the effect of the corn con
tests upon the boys participating It
says:
The boy who haa engaged in a *
contest of bis kitd, whether success-1
fully or not, has gained practical
training of far reacbiog value and
lasting significance. He has been
brought iu touch with the gieat
natural laws on one band and with
modern science on the other. He
has by bis own efforts demonstrated
the relation between the two. He
has been led to work and think, to ap
ply knowledge to the most practical
affairs of life. By his own efforts
he has made a crop and dignified
himself by accomplishment. He
has established in his own mind for
all time the relation cf theory and
practice.
Good Roads In Dade
(From the Dade County Times)
The suggestion that the ordinary
levy a tax sufficient to raise $4,000
each year for the purpose of build
ing a pike road through our county
is indeed a wise «ne and appeals
favorably to every thinking citizen
in Dade county. A levy of $4,000
will not oppress any taxpayer, how
ever poor he may be; and if expend
ed in judicioua manner will in a
few years, build a thoroughfare in
our county, and will be paid for
when completed.
Rumor has it that the Chattanooga
Southern is planniug all kinds of
improvements. Here's hoping.
