Carternville, t*a., Aug. 8, 19)0.
To the Voter* of the Seventh Cou

t’ongressi' rint district subject to the
ehetiou to be held in November of tne
preei nt year

Wasn’t the fair the best eve:!
Remember Tuesday, Nov. Bth.
I',very Democrat should do his
duty next Tuesday
Fairs are like elections—there are
never enough prizes to go around.
That was a varied exhibit made
by the weatherman for the Walker
county fair
Lots of second-hand lanterns will
l>e on the bargain-counter in La-
Fayette soon.
It has come to this point--either
we must on large our square or se
cure a fair ground.
Score 111 bushels of corn to 1
acre in Walker. -And watch us
smash that record next year.
Two years ago the seventh went
republican. Put it back in the
Democratic column next week.
Walker county farmers are not
grum ling at the price of cotton;
it’s the quantity that makes them
mad.
Does look as if the council that
built the waterworks ami electric
light plants could manage the prob
lem of a new defvot.
The Walker County Spirit
The annual Walker county fair
will be held at LaFayette on Thurs
day and Friday of this week, and
will be, as usual, a great success.
The citizens of Walker county
are broad-minded and liberal, and
are ever willing to give aid to any
movement that is beneficial to their
county.
Nothing has ever been found to
lie of greater value to every citizen
in a county, thsn has been the
county fair. It creates a friendly
rivalry atnoug the farmers: beingan
incentive to better farming, and
stock raising, and is equally bene
ficial to the business men.
The county that annually holds a
fair is the county that is prosperons
and enterprisiug. and the V alker
county spirit has made it the banner
county of North G eorgia.—Dade
County Times.

BE SURE TO VOTE IN THE ELECTION OF TUES
DAY, NOV. BTH
The election for congresaman occurs next Tuesday, Nov. Bth, and the
I voters of Walker county should make a mental note of this date and not
fail to turn out aod give lion. Gordon Lee, our fellow citizen, who ia the
nominee of the Democratic party, a splandid vote on that day.
Mr. Lee has opposition in the regular election, Hon. Walter Aker
man, of Cartersville, running as a republican nominee; and while Mr.
Akermau is a good man, he is not the choice of the dominant party of the
district, and the only chance of his election is for thousands of Democrats
to stay away from the polls next Tuesday.
Over two thousand voters of Walker participated in the primary of
Aug. 23rd, in which Mr. Lee was nominated, and each voter obligated
himself to support the nominee This obligation should be discharged
next Tuesday,
Remember, then, to go and vote, and let us give our fellow countian
another splendid majority.
INTENSIVE FARMING
We believe it is utterly impossible to calculate the good that has re
sulted from the corn growing contests between the farmer boys and the
farmers of the county fur the splendid prizes offered by Z. C. Patten and
Gordon Lee.
'lake the case of Dr. Crowder and his bov. lie had in com this year
a four-acte tract, two acres of this field being set aside for the special con
tests. Vet from this four acre tract he gathered four hundred bushels of
corn!
Rear in mind * hat 10 > bushels of corn is a good crop of corn for the
average farmer of the county. Rut the average farmer requires from 15
to 25 acres to make his 400 bushels of corn. And we have the proof that
■IOO bushels of corn can in Walker be easily made from four acres of land.
Take the case of R. T. Ilenrv, who won third prize in the Patten
contest. Mr Ilenry made 112 bushels from his acre, but he states that
he has learned much about corn cultivation and he believes that another
year he can easily glow 150 bushels from an acre.
Consider, too, the valuable experience acquired by every one of the
thirty five boys who entered the Lee contest. The yields made by the3ix
boys who won prize money, compare favorably with other counties of the
state holding these boys contests, but the best tLing about the contests is
that it has started them on the right road and they will be the intensive
farmers of the future.
And intensive farming will make old Walker blossom like the rose.
FAIR GROUNDS NEEDED
The successful fair last week proved many things, but above all else
it proved the pressing need for fair grounds for these annual exhibits on
the part of the farmers of Walker.
We ought to go to work now, this month, and organize a company
and purchase a small tract of land close in where at least a quarter-mile
track can be constructed, and the necessary building for showing farm
products, the exhibits of the ladies, poultry and stock can be erected.
This ought by all means to be done at once, so that the grounds can be
used for the anneal fair next year.
Let 11s get to work on this matter now aid lay the foundation hv se
ouring suitable buildings and well arranged grounds, for having the best
county fair in the state.
Such ground as is needed for the buildings can bt secured in the
Fariss addition within two or three blocks of the rquare and there should
be no trouble in quickly securing subscriptions to the stock.
As the fair is a county enterprize and the great bulk of the prizes go
to the farmers of the county, we believe the farmers of the county should
be asked to aid the citizens of LaFayette in making up the premium list.
If this weie done, sufficient money would be secured to give further
prizes for intensive farming. Resides ottering prizes foribe best acre of
corn, prizes should also lie given for the best acre of wheat, cottoD, and
other crops By thus encouiaging intensive farming, the greatest good
of the agriculluial interests of the county can be accomplished.
